In this paper, we consider the subliminal channel, hidden in an identification scheme, for signature transfer. We point out that the direct parallelization of the Fiat-Shamir identification scheme has a subliminal channel for the transmission of the digital signature, which does not exist in the serial (zero-knowledge) version. We apply this subliminal channel to a multi-verifier interactive protocol and propose a distributed verification signature that cannot be verified without all verifiers' corporation. Our proposed protocol is the first implementation of the distributed verification signature without secure channels, and the basic idea of our construction suggests the novel primitive with which a signature transfer secure against adversary can be constructed using only one-way function (without trapdoor). © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1993.

In this paper we address the problem of detecting and diagnosing faults in physical systems, for which neither prior expertise for the task nor suitable system models are available. We propose an architecture that integrates the on-line acquisition and exploitation of monitoring and diagnostic knowledge. The focus of the paper is on the component of the architecture that discovers classes of behaviors with similar characteristics by observing a system in operation. We investigate a characterization of behaviors based on best fitting approximation models. An experimental prototype has been implemented to test it. We present preliminary results in diagnosing faults of the Reaction Control System of the Space Shuttle. The merits and limitations of the approach are identified and directions for future work are set. © 1993 SPIE. All rights reserved.

Computational Morphology is the analysis of form by computational means. This discipline typically uses techniques from Computational Geometry and computer Aided Geometric Design. The present paper is more specifically about the construction and manipulation of closed object boundaries through a set of scattered points in 3D. Original results are developed in three stages of computational morphology: impose a geometrical structure on the set of points;construct a polyhedral boundary surface from this geometrical structure;build a hierarchy of polyhedral approximations together with localization information;The economic advantage of this approach is that there is no dependency on any specific data source. It can be used for various types of data sources or when the source is unknown. © 1993 Eurographics Association

It is shown that fractal dimension estimates and Gabor wavelet coefficients are valid features of segmenting high-resolution polarimetric synthetic aperture radar imagery. Results of training a radial basis function neural network using fractal dimension features, Gabor wavelet coefficients, and a combination of both fractal and Gabor wavelet features are presented. Current research into combining these two techniques both theoretically and empirically is presented. One-foot resolution polarimetric synthetic aperture radar imagery is successfully segmented into culture, tree, field, and shadow regions.< >

The authors present an approximate analysis of an asymmetric token ring network with nonpreemptive priority under a new discipline named the go-back-to-higher-priority discipline. This discipline is described and the token ring network is analysed on the basis of the independent hypothesis for the distribution of the cycle time. Then, probabilities for the number of messages at the token's arrival, a mean cycle time, a mean intervisit time of the token and a mean waiting time of messages for each priority level are obtained. To calculate the mean waiting time for a lower priority level, a root of the denominator of the generating function plays an important role. In some numerical examples with simulation results, the mean waiting time for the go-back-to-higher-priority discipline is compared with that for an asymmetric token ring network with nonpreemptive priority under a one-limited discipline. © 1992 IEEE.

The dielectric properties of water-treed crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) were studied by using a hollow microwave wave-guide system between 135 MHz and 13.6 GHz. The dielectric loss of water-treed XLPE is proportional to water content. Water-treed XLPE has a low relaxation frequency which is probably due to bound water. The binding of water in trees was confirmed by the lower apparent water diffusion rate in treed XLPE than in undamaged controls measured with a radioactive tracer method.

Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) detectors are designed to perform when the clutter information is partially unknown and/or varying. This is accomplished using local threshold estimates from background observations in which the CFAR level is maintained. However, when local observations contain target or irrelevant information, censoring is warranted to improve detection performance. Order Statistics (OS) processors have been shown to perform robustly (referring to type II errors or CFAR loss) for heterogeneous background clutter observations, and their performance has been analyzed for exponential clutter with unknown power. In this paper, several order statistics are used to create an invariant test statistic for Weibull clutter with two varying parameters (i.e., power and skewness). The robustness of a two-parameter invariant CFAR detector is analyzed and compared with an uncensored Weibull-Two Parameter (WTP) CFAR detector and conventional Cell Averaging (CA)-CFAR detector (i.e., designed invariant to exponential clutter). The performance trade-offs of these detectors are gaged for different scenarios of volatile clutter environments. © 1992 Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. In Vision guided robotic operations, the rapid location and identification of image objects for assembly is essential. The image object data taken with a ccd camera may be in the form of a grey level, binary or colour image. This paper discusses our work on new speed up methods for object recognition in binary and grey level images. These are a coarse/fine stepping method and a sparse template technique. An extension of the coarse fine technique to give larger speedups is discussed. © 1992 IEEE.

This paper presents a new neural net approach to robot visuo-motor coordination. The approach, referred to here as "neurobotics", establishes neural net-based visual error servoing as a fundamental mechanism of implementing visuo-motor coordination. Visual error servoing is achieved by projecting the robot task space on the 3D perception net (representing the robot internal 3D space) and generating an incremental change of 3D space arm configuration in the 3D perception net based on potential field-based reactive path planning. The 3D space arm configuration planned in the 3D perception net is then translated into the corresponding joint angles through the arm kinematic net. The arm kinematic net is formed based on radial-based competitive and cooperative network. Simulation results are shown. © 1992 IEEE.

This paper presents a system architecture for autonomous navigation for a mobile platform designed on the view of activities. A control unit that acts upon information posted on a blackboard supervises these activities. Each activity is composed of several sensing modules connected to one or more perception modules, which are, in turn, connected to an appropriate action module so that the platform can perform a defined functionality. The control unit inter. acting with the blackboard decides what activity should be active at any given time, based on information provided by the perception modules. Interaction between activities is minimal or none, and, therefore, it is possible to design and debug each activity independently. Information detected by the perception modules is posted on the blackboard to be processed by the control unit. This control unit has the option to alter the parameters of the current activity, or to deactivate its action module so that another activity can be enabled. It acts as a high level reasoning agent, while the activities can perform the desired functionalities of the vehicle in real time. This architecture supports the use of multiple sensors;they are treated as modules that can easily be connected to the,perception modules. This leads to an activity-based system structure which is highly flexible and adaptive. Defining the activities in this control architecture is much easier than defining levels of abstraction in a hierarchical structure and less error-prone than describing layers in a behavior-based controller. © 1992 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.
