Characterization of Autocovariance Parameters of Detrended Cone Tip Resistance from a Global CPT Database

This paper compiles a cone penetration test (CPT) database, named Global-CPT/3/1196. It contains three CPT parameters (cone tip resistance, sleeve friction, and porewater pressure) from 1,196 CPT soundings taken at 59 sites worldwide. The spatially variable cone tip resistance corrected for porewater pressure (qt) soundings in the database are analyzed by a uniform procedure to characterize their autocovariance parameters consisting of a coefficient of variation, scale of fluctuation, smoothness, and hole effect. This is the first study that characterizes spatial variability based on a more complete set of three parameters: scale of fluctuation, smoothness, and hole effect. Previous studies were based on a single parameter (scale of fluctuation). The statistics of the autocovariance parameters and their inter-relationships are presented as a function of soil behavior type. These new statistics may be valuable for a future design founded on insufficient site investigation data: they can be used to obtain first-order estimates for the autocovariance parameters based on soil behavior type. Applications include data-driven site characterization and random finite-element analysis. © 2023 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Compared to the five basic tastes, smell, as an intrinsic element, is crucial in augmenting flavor and dietary experience within Human-Food Interaction. While much research has explored orthonasal olfaction in olfactory displays, the potential of retronasal olfaction in interaction design is always overlooked and less understood. This paper introduces AromaBite, an accessible, edible, bio-compatible and ingestible odor storage and release mechanism that integrates natural eating behaviors, providing dynamic retronasal olfactory experiences. We detail AromaBite’s design parameters and process and technically test its airtightness and durability. We employ time-intensity (TI), confirming that retronasal olfaction significantly enhances flavor perception and providing a design library mapping form factors to guide natural oral interaction. We envision that AromaBite will augment dept. and immersive flavor experiences in Virtual Reality, olfactory training, and personalized dining interactions. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Drunk driving continues to be a substantial public health issue, leading to a multitude of accidents and deaths on a global scale. Conventional techniques for identifying drunk driving, such as breathalyzers and field sobriety tests, tend to be reactive rather than proactive. This paper surveys the existing methods for detecting drunk driving to enhance traffic safety. The technologies studied can proactively detect impaired driving behaviors by combining machine learning (ML) approaches with real-time data processing. The study outlines various classifications based on measured metrics and driving behavior.

In the process of quality analysis of grains, number counting is one of the key steps for agricultural production. Traditional manual grain counting methods are time-consuming and subject to human error, and automated methods have the potential to improve accuracy and save time. In this study, we aimed to develop an image analysis-based method to automatically quantify the number of grains in a quicker manner. The 576 grain images were collected manually, and labelImg tagging tool used to annotate to generate a text file with their respective positions by drawing bounding boxes manually. The datasets consist were separated into three groups: training, validation, and test. For object detection, the YOLOv5, YOLOv4, and YOLOv3 algorithms represent cutting-edge deep learning frameworks. They replace the tedious and error-prone manual counting process by precisely identifying and counting grains in images obtained from agricultural fields. This technique helps to increase grain counting's precision and effectiveness. We believe this method will be extremely beneficial in guiding the development of high throughput systems for counting the number of grains in other crops as it performs well with a wide range of backgrounds, picture sizes, grain sizes, as well as various quantities of grain crowding. When compared to the other two approaches, YOLOv4 performed well in terms of accuracy, speed, and robustness (97.65%), demonstrating that the suggested strategy is competitive with other cutting-edge deep networkst.

The increasing need for real-time data analytics in edge computing is furthered by the latency pressures from computational and communication bottlenecks, thus demanding novel solutions. Fundamental approaches to federated learning and distributed machine learning do not accommodate changes in dynamic latency conditions very well, thereby being inefficient in terms of synchronization, communication overhead, and delay in task execution. This paper presents a holistic framework consisting of three innovative approaches to solve these problems: Latency-Aware Federated Edge-Aware Optimization (LAFEO), Latency-Driven Gradient Compression with Adaptive Sparsity (LAGCAS), and Predictive Latency Compensation with Dynamic Replication (PLCDR). The LAFEO framework consists of a double-layer optimization framework, combining latency-weighted scheduling with reinforcement learning to dynamically adapt the synchronization frequencies. This results in 25-30% end-to-end latency reduction with an accuracy deviation that is capped at 2% centralized models. LAGCAS reduces communication overhead by applying adaptive gradient scarification methods, bringing compressions of gradients under real-time accuracy thresholds: it reduces 40% communication volume and accelerates convergence by 20%. PLCDR uses predictive modelling to predict latency bottlenecks and dynamically replicates critical computations across the edge nodes. It hence offers 15-25% decrease in the completion time of tasks and up to 30% enhancement in the resilience of system sets. The existing methods will be addressed with the key limitations due to the introduction of latency-aware mechanisms that adapt to real-time edge conditions along with high accuracy and efficiency. Simulation results have shown marked scalability improvements, latency reductions, and resilience; in its positioning, this work's effort is a transformative advancement in the latency-sensitive edge computing process.

Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are crucial for modernizing the power grid but are monitored by sensors that are susceptible to anomalies like failures, faults, or cyberattacks that could affect BESS functionality. Much work has been done to detect sensor anomalies, but a research gap persists in responding to anomalies. An approach is proposed to mitigate the damage caused by additive bias anomalies by employing one-of-three estimators based on the anomalies present. A tuned cumulative sum (CUSUM) algorithm is used to identify anomalies, and a set of rules are proposed to select an estimator that will isolate the effect of the anomaly. The proposed approach is evaluated using two simulated studies, one in which an anomaly impacts the input and one where an anomaly impacts an output sensor.

The advancements in precision agriculture are vi-tal to support the increasing demand for global food supply. Precision spot spraying is a major step towards reducing chemicalusage for pest and weed control in agriculture. A novel spot spraying algorithm that autonomously detects weeds and performs trajectory planning for the sprayer nozzle has been proposed. Furthermore, this research introduces a vision-based autonomous navigation system that operates through the detected crop row, effectively synchronizing with an autonomous spraying algorithm. This proposed system is characterized by its cost effectiveness that enable the autonomous spraying of herbicides onto detected weeds.

The significant penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) in the smart grid (SG) provides a new landscape for researchers to develop an optimal energy management model. The households with RES become prosumers to provide the surplus energy in the local community. The coordination and control of such RES prosumers are important to estimate the available energy in the system and the total demand required. In this paper, we proposed a decentralized coordination control approach for transactive energy systems (TES). The proposed TES is capable of coordinating and controlling a complex network of prosumers with limited control information. The consensusability and graph-theoretic schemes are used for prosumer RES nodes. In the proposed model, energy trading among large-scale prosumers has been demonstrated. The algorithm is capable to provide the total surplus energy available across the network and total demand in an autonomous fashion. The coordination control among prosumers is achieved through a computationally efficient approach without sharing the prosumer’s profile to preserve the security and privacy of the prosumers. To validate the proposed scheme, we perform extensive simulations on decentralized 450 prosumers. The resiliency of the proposed scheme is confirmed through dynamic and contingent communication topologies for energy trading ratios, cumulative returns, and convergence ratios. The cumulative returns improved from 0.447% to 24.8% while the energy trade among the prosumers recorded from -0.89 to 2.09. The final return is enhanced from −1.95% to 22.3% due to internal and external coordination control of nonlinear loads.

Monitoring human activities to ensure the safety and welfare of humans is essential in the present age of mindfulness. Human Activity Recognition (HAR) offers a technical method to detect and identify human actions in real-time. We used YOLOv8s, a deep learning system, to recognize a kindergartener's behaviors and positions. After recognizing the student's movements, an assessment determines jumps per second and jump duration. We utilized our dataset, named Kid Action Recognition (KAR). The KAR (Kid Action Recognition) dataset consisted of 6489 photos. We manually labeled all photos using ***. We analyzed and trained the data in a Google Colaboratory setting with an A-100 GPU. The model demonstrates an overall accuracy of 88.7% and an F1 score of 86.6%. The recall score is 89.5%, and the precision is 83.9%. The model excelled in all parameters and can effectively identify student activities, making it suitable for potential use in institutions such as daycare centers and schools.

Printed circuit board dielectric substrates are composite materials produced by embedding fiber glass fabrics into epoxy resin. Because of this the medium in the PCB transmission lines is inhomogeneous which often leads to degradation of the signal integrity performance of the lines, particularly due to the differential skew. The detrimental effect of the fiber weave can be modeled relatively accurately using full-wave analysis, but at a high computational cost. Alternative modelling techniques are less demanding, but often lack accuracy. This article investigates a possibility of using the 2D cross-sectional analysis for the fiber weave effect modeling, which considerably decreases the computational cost of modeling while retaining the accuracy inherent to the field solvers.
