The existence of diffuse Galactic neutrino production is expected from cosmic ray interactions with Galactic gas and radiation fields. Thus, neutrinos are a unique messenger offering the opportunity to test the products of Galactic cosmic ray interactions up to energies of hundreds of TeV. Here we present a search for this production using ten years of ANTARES track and shower data, as well as seven years of IceCube track data. The data are combined into a joint likelihood test for neutrino emission according to the KRAγ model assuming a 5 PeV per nucleon Galactic cosmic ray cutoff. No significant excess is found. As a consequence, the limits presented in this work start constraining the model parameter space for Galactic cosmic ray production and transport. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Frequency regulation becomes a non-trivial issue due to an increase in renewable resources and power electronicsbased loads. Direct load control (DLC), a strategy of autonomous demand response, has been applied to mitigate operational burdens on generation units for frequency regulation. Variable speed heat pumps (VSHPs) have been regarded as promising devices that can respond to the DLC signal updated every 2 or 4 seconds. This paper presents a dynamic model of the VSHP that is simplified for real-time simulation studies but still sufficiently comprehensive to analyze its physical and operational characteristics. Furthermore, a variable speed drive (VSD)-controlled induction motor model is designed together with an indirect torque controller for the adjustment of the VSHP input power. In addition, based on experimental setup and data, a test room was modeled to estimate the effect of the DLC-enabled VSHP on indoor temperature. Simulation case studies performed in MATLAB/SIMULINK verify that the VSHP can be well utilized as DLC-enabled loads for frequency regulation while ensuring residents' comfort and long-term device performance. © 2014 IEEE.

The KM3NeT research infrastructure is currently under construction at two locations in the Mediterranean Sea. The KM3NeT/ORCA water-Cherenkov neutrino detector off the French coast will instrument several megatons of seawater with photosensors. Its main objective is the determination of the neutrino mass ordering. This work aims at demonstrating the general applicability of deep convolutional neural networks to neutrino telescopes, using simulated datasets for the KM3NeT/ORCA detector as an example. To this end, the networks are employed to achieve reconstruction and classification tasks that constitute an alternative to the analysis pipeline presented for KM3NeT/ORCA in the KM3NeT Letter of Intent. They are used to infer event reconstruction estimates for the energy, the direction, and the interaction point of incident neutrinos. The spatial distribution of Cherenkov light generated by charged particles induced in neutrino interactions is classified as shower- or track-like, and the main background processes associated with the detection of atmospheric neutrinos are recognized. Performance comparisons to machine-learning classification and maximum-likelihood reconstruction algorithms previously developed for KM3NeT/ORCA are provided. It is shown that this application of deep convolutional neural networks to simulated datasets for a large-volume neutrino telescope yields competitive reconstruction results and performance improvements with respect to classical approaches. KM3NeT is a research infrastructure being installed in the deep Mediterranean Sea. It will house a neutrino telescope comprising hundreds of networked moorings – detection units or strings – equipped with optical instrumentation to detect the Cherenkov radiation generated by charged particles from neutrino-induced collisions in its vicinity. In comparison to moorings typically used for oceanography, several key features of the KM3NeT string are different: the instrumentation is contained in transparent and thus unprotected glass spheres;two thin Dyneema® ropes are used as strength members;and a thin delicate backbone tube with fibre-optics and copper wires for data and power transmission, respectively, runs along the full length of the mooring. Also, compared to other neutrino telescopes such as ANTARES in the Mediterranean Sea and GVD in Lake Baikal, the KM3NeT strings are more slender to minimise the amount of material used for support of the optical sensors. Moreover, the rate of deploying a large number of strings in a period of a few years is unprecedented. For all these reasons, for the installation of the KM3NeT strings, a custom-made, fast deployment method was designed. Despite the length of several hundreds of metres, the slim design of the string allows it to be compacted into a small, re-usable spherical launching vehicle instead of deploying the mooring weight down from a surface vessel. After being lowered to the seafloor, the string unfurls to its full length with the buoyant launching vehicle rolling along the two ropes. The gSeaGen code is a GENIE-based application developed to efficiently generate high statistics samples of events, induced by neutrino interactions, detectable in a neutrino telescope. The gSeaGen code is able to generate events induced by all neutrino flavours, considering topological differences between track-type and shower-like events. Neutrino interactions are simulated taking into account the density and the composition of the media surrounding the detector. The use of prior studies to complement the information in Breast Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) can help to reduce the currently high false positive ratios. Registration is a fundamental part of this process, as registration algorithms provide automatic correspondences between current and prior studies. The deformable nature of the breast and differences in acquisition protocols make this a particularly challenging problem. In this paper we study three registration algorithms (Affine, SyN and Demons) applied to DCE-MRI images obtained from clinical practice. The methodology followed for this study included using segmentation algorithms in order to focus on the area of the breast. Anatomical landmarks were also added by an expert for evaluation purposes. This allowed us to use an anatomical-landmark-based measure in order to evaluate the quality of registration. Additionally, an image metric was also used for the same purpose. Results, shown to be statistically significant indicate how SyN obtains the best results in terms of the two measures considered. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

The segmentation of the breast from the background and the pectoral muscle is the first pre-processing step in computerised mammographic analysis. This problem is usually solved by dividing it into two different segmentation strategies, one for the background and another one for the pectoral muscle. In this paper we tackle this problem jointly using a supervised single strategy. Namely, from a set of manually segmented mammograms, we model each of the three regions (breast, pectoral muscle, and background) using position, intensity, and texture information. Although the approach requires a training step, it allows a fast and reliable segmentation of new mammograms. The obtained results using 149 mammograms of the MIAS database show a high degree of overlap between manual and automatic segmentation.

Crowdsourced multimedia data poses several challenges when it is collected, stored, indexed, retrieved, and visualized. Examples of crowd source multimedia data are social sensors, vehicle sensors, physical sensors, human sensors, etc. Analyzing such multimodal and diversified crowdsourced data provides very rich understanding about the need of individuals within a crowd. Such understanding makes it possible to tailor services to individuals' needs, also called context-aware services. In this paper, we propose a spatial multimedia big data framework that can collect multimedia data from 1) a very large crowd equipped with multi-sensory smartphones, 2) vehicles, and 3) social networks. A set of multimedia services are offered to users to support their spatio-temporal activities. These include but not limited to 1) simple user interfaces to utilize multimedia services for instant guidance, 2) navigation to points of interests (POI), and 3) efficient and cost effective intra-city rides to users. The big data framework is designed to handle a very large number of multimedia spatio-temporal queries in real-time. The system is a pilot project and will be deployed during the event of Hajj 2015 when over three million pilgrims from all over the world will visit Makkah, Saudi Arabia to perform their Hajj rituals.
