KM3NeT will be a network of deep-sea neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean Sea. The KM3NeT/ARCA detector, to be installed at the Capo Passero site (Italy), is optimised for the detection of high-energy neutrinos of cosmic origin. Thanks to its geographical location on the Northern hemisphere, KM3NeT/ARCA can observe upgoing neutrinos from most of the Galactic Plane, including the Galactic Centre. Given its effective area and excellent pointing resolution, KM3NeT/ARCA will measure or significantly constrain the neutrino flux from potential astrophysical neutrino sources. At the same time, it will test flux predictions based on gamma-ray measurements and the assumption that the gamma-ray flux is of hadronic origin. Assuming this scenario, discovery potentials and sensitivities for a selected list of Galactic sources and to generic point sources with an E−2 spectrum are presented. These spectra are assumed to be time independent. The results indicate that an observation with 3σ significance is possible in about six years of operation for the most intense sources, such as Supernovae Remnants RXJ1713.7-3946 and Vela Jr. If no signal will be found during this time, the fraction of the gamma-ray flux coming from hadronic processes can be constrained to be below 50% for these two objects. The online evolution and learning of fuzzy systems is highly important when dealing with changing environments over time. This capability is especially relevant in the field of control, due to the special characteristics of control problems. In this field, techniques capable of developing controllers with a minimum amount of prior knowledge about the plants to be controlled are desired. Furthermore, these controllers should provide a reduced number of interpretable rules. This paper presents a new Online Self-Evolving Neuro Fuzzy controller based on the Taylor Series Neuro Fuzzy (TaSe-NF) model. Under the assumption of no prior knowledge about the differential equations that define the plant to be controlled, this methodology is capable of incrementally evolving the structure of the controller and adapting its parameters online, while controlling the plant. The new methodology uses a scattered distribution of the fuzzy rules, thereby reducing the number of rules in the fuzzy controller. Moreover, the use of the TaSe-NF model to represent the antecedents of the rules enhances the interpretability of the obtained rules. The proposed evolving fuzzy controller is composed of two main blocks: On the one hand, the online local learning of the rule consequents tackles the task of providing a proper control at the present moment. On the other hand, a structure self-evolution method analyzes the error surface to determine which cluster/rule suffers the worst performance and therefore, needs to be further split. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the capabilities of this new online self-evolving controller. © 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This paper presents an automated code generation and validation, verification approach to convert model based developments into IEC 61131-3 conform function blocks. IEC 61131-3 programming languages are supported by PLC manufacturers and software environment developers and provide the possibility that novel and intelligent algorithms can be directly operated on industrial accepted systems. Railway and transportation also receive drastic changes from purely hardware based systems to microcontroller + software driven systems. However, the conversion has to follow certain steps to ensure that the adaptation is done correctly and functionality is not alternated, added or deleted. Concepts suggested by different international standards such as the IEC 61508 can help to derive a tool chain to verify the generated code. © IFAC.

As the penetration of photovoltaic (PV) systems on building rooftops increases, the accumulated effects of the rooftop PV output fluctuation on the electric utility are no longer negligible. Energy storage systems have been used to smooth PV power, especially when the building load becomes low. Commercial buildings are increasingly expected to charge or discharge plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), which can be regarded as distributed energy storage. This paper presents an alternative power system for commercial buildings, which compensates for rooftop PV power fluctuation by charging or discharging PHEV batteries, and moreover, participates in tracking frequency regulation signals. The proposed system is designed and implemented using steady-state and dynamic models of power converters and controllers. Simulation studies performed in MATLAB/SIMULINK verify that the objective can be achieved under various conditions, determined by such factors as the maximum voltage, minimum state-of-charge, and desired PHEV charging end-time. © 2013 IEEE.

Capturing users' spatio-temporal context by recognizing their interests, locations, history and activities, and thereafter providing context-aware services is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a spatio-temporal zoning model that takes different context dimensions into account and try to recommend necessary services to users in a personalized way. First, we propose a generic zoning model with unrestricted set of contexts where both spatial and temporal dimensions are relaxed, followed by two semi-restricted zoning models in which either spatial or temporal dimension is relaxed, while the other one is restricted. Finally, we show the model requiring restricted spatio-temporal zoning that applies to the scenario where millions of users need to perform some activities that have to be performed in a certain location and at a certain temporal period. We use the above zoning model for Hajj and Umrah events to define pilgrim's spatio-temporal contexts by capturing their real-time and historic activities through their smartphones' sensory data. This allows to intelligently recommend a set of necessary services to the users. We present a few of the implementations introduced in our proposed system.

This paper describes the use of ant colony models for photographic rendering, that is, for the depiction or interpretation of photographic images. A description of a previously proposed ant-based edge detection method called pherographia is given in order to contextualize this paper's proposal. Then, the application of the KANTS algorithm to photo-rendering is introduced. KANTS is ant-based clustering algorithm described by a set of equations that model the local behavior of simple units (ants). These units represent data samples. When moving on a heterogeneous 2-dimensional lattice of vectors, global behavior emerges from the local interaction between the ants, which self-organize into clusters. In this paper, a data set consists of the RGB values of a digital (or digitalized) photograph. Two different approaches for the initialization of the environment are tested, each one resulting in radically different output images: when the environment is initialized with the RGB values of the same image that is used to generate the data set, the final result is very similar to the original photo;a random initialization of the environment leads to an abstract interpretation of the photo. The results are contextualized within previous swarm artworks by the authors. © 2013 IEEE.

We propose a context aware framework that offers a set of cloud-based services to support a very large Hajj and Umrah crowd by capturing their contexts using smartphones. The proposed framework captures the individual's context, provides a set of adapted services, and allows being in touch with a subset of one's community of interest. We leverage the spatiotemporal sensory data captured by our framework to define users' contexts for optimized services. Our proposed framework is also envisioned to assist the Hajj and Umrah authorities to (1) improve Hajj & Umrah documentation, (2) improve Hajj organization through better understanding of pilgrims' (individual and crowd) spatial and temporal behavior and needs, and (3) protect pilgrims' environment through environmental monitoring. In particular, the developed methods, techniques, and algorithms will support the pilgrimage quality of experience. We have tested our system through end-user subjects and due to apply for the upcoming Hajj events. We present our implementation details and the general impression of end users about our system.

This paper is focused on the development of intelligent classifiers in the area of biomedicine, focusing on the problem of diagnosing cardiac diseases based on the electrocardiogram (ECG), or more precisely, on the differentiation of several arrhythmia using a large data set, by an autonomous intelligent system which can be used as an expert system to support human experts in the diagnosis and, moreover, to autonomously display an alarm to the user in case of a dangerous situation. We will study and imitate the ECG treatment methodologies and the features extracted from the electrocardiograms used by the researchers, which obtained the best results in the PhysioNet Challenge. We will extract a great amount of features, partly those used by these researchers and some additional others we considered to be important for the distinction previously mentioned. A new method based on different paradigms of intelligent computation (such as extreme learning machine, support vector machine and feature selection) will be used to select the most relevant characteristics and to obtain a classifier capable of autonomously distinguishing the different types arrhythmia from the ECG signal. Finally, the behavior and performance of the classifier have been tested using data from several cardiac pathologies, obtaining good classification results.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is a noninvasive technique used to reflect underlying heart conditions by measuring the electrical activity of the heart, and nowadays it is possible with just a few derivation (with just only two), obtain important information in order than an expert can recognize abnormal heart rhythms (the heart rate is very fast, very slow, or irregular) or a heart attack (myocardial infarction), and if it was recent or some time ago. In this paper, several intelligent classifiers are developed, focusing on the problem of diagnosing cardiac diseases based on the electrocardiogram (ECG), or more precisely, on the differentiation of several arrhythmia using a large data set. We will study and imitate the ECG treatment methodologies and the features extracted from the electrocardiograms used by the researchers, which obtained the best results in the PhysioNet Challenge (***/). We will extract a great amount of features, partly those used by these researchers and some additional others we considered to be important for the distinction previously mentioned. A new method based on different paradigms of intelligent computation (such as extreme learning machine, support vector machine, decision trees, genetic algorithms and feature selection) will be used to select the most relevant characteristics and to obtain a classifier capable of autonomously distinguishing the different types arrhythmia from the ECG signal.
