In this work we employ a steady state genetic algorithm to evolve bots' behaviors in the Unreal Tournament 2004™ game. Our aim is to show whether interesting behaviors can be obtained with simple fitness functions. For this purpose we define four functions, measuring the number of enemies killed, the bot's lifespan, a combination of both and the number of items collected. The experiments show that incorporating a measure of the bot's lifespan in the fitness results in an optimal behavior in all aspects considered;further, the bots evolved this way outperform the standard bots supplied by the game. In addition, there is an increase in the number of items collected (even when this is not explicitly included in the fitness) and a tendency towards a more optimised combat style with less aggressive behaviors.

We present here an approach for automatic mass diagnosis in mammographic images. Our strategy contains three main steps. Firstly, region of interests containing mass and background are segmented using a level set algorithm based on region information. Secondly, the characterisation of each segmented mass is obtained using the Zernike moments for modelling its shape. The final step is the diagnosis of masses as benign or malignant lesions, which is done using the Gentleboost algorithm that also assigns a likelihood value to the final result. The experimental evaluation, performed using two different digitised databases and Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) analysis, proves the feasibility of our proposal, showing the benefits of a correct shape description for improving automatic mass diagnosis.

Benefits like elimination of hard-wiring, cost reduction, infrastructure-free and easy maintenance make Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) an innovative technology whose range of applications is increasing in many different environments. Since WSNs were born, reliable communications have been a challenge. Some complex routing solutions have been presented in the recent past. In this paper, the objective is to present a simple algorithm to enhance the reliability of end-to-end transmissions optimizing power consumption and to demonstrate that it works in applications that require bounded delay guarantees on packet delivery.

Microprocessors is a typical subject within the computerarchitecture field of scope. It is quite common to use simulators in practical sessions, due to the complexity of its contents. In this paper a new methodology based on practical sessions with real devices and chips is proposed. Simple designs of microprocessors are exposed to the students at the beginning, rising the complexity gradually toward a final design with a multiprocessor integrated in a single FPGA chip. Finally, assessment results are shown.
