Enhancing the Kubernetes Platform with a Load-Aware Orchestration Strategy

Microservice architecture is increasingly favored for building large-scale applications designed for deployment in distributed and resource-constrained cloud-to-edge computing environments. As a cloud-native approach, microservices are particularly powerful due to their loosely coupled, independently deployable, and scalable characteristics. These features enable distributed deployment and flexible integration across robust cloud data centers and heterogeneous, often resource-limited, edge nodes. To fully leverage these advantages, there is a need for advanced placement algorithms that can optimize application performance by utilizing the strengths of microservices. In response to these challenges, we propose to extend Kubernetes with a load-aware orchestration strategy, which enhances its capability to deploy microservice applications within shared clusters characterized by dynamic resource usage patterns. Our approach orchestrates applications dynamically, based on real-time resource usage, allowing for continuous adjustment of their placement to match evolving conditions. Evaluation of a prototype system in a testbed environment demonstrates that this approach offers substantial benefits compared to the standard Kubernetes scheduler. © The Author(s) 2025.

Consider learning the shared representations from multiple unlabeled views. Previous work either projects different views to the same space while enforcing the agreement among the projected views such as multiview canonical correlation analysis (MCCA), or factorizes different views while ensuring the common latent components across the views such as PARAFAC2, a tensor decomposition method. In this paper we first investigate a fundamental question: 'Do these two approaches learn different representations?' Preliminary numerical results suggest that in practice they do, which, in turn, begs the question of how we can leverage this observation in order to compute a superior representation. In this paper, we present a simple proof-of-concept scheme which augments MCCA with PARAFAC2 representations and vice-versa, and we demonstrate on multiple real datasets that such scheme can improve upon the baseline representation, paving the way for future research on optimally combining the strengths of projection and factorization methods for multiview representation learning. © 2024 IEEE.

Combined Volt-VAR and Volt-Watt Control for PCC Voltage stabilization in Smart Inverters

This paper proposes the combined Volt-VAR and Volt-Watt control method of smart inverters to stabilize the point of common coupling (PCC) voltage. The distributed energy sources (DER) using renewable energy such as solar and wind power are increasing because of environmental issues worldwide. When the DER increases, the PCC voltage fluctuates, which causes a decrease in grid stability and power quality. Smart inverter provides grid support function such as Volt-VAR and Volt-Watt control method to eliminate these problems. The Volt-VAR control method adjusts capacitive/inductive reactive power based on the PCC voltage. The Volt-Watt control method stabilizes the PCC voltage by reducing active power. The combined Volt-VAR and Volt-Watt control method reduces the active power while it controls the inductive reactive power to the maximum. This paper proposes the combined Volt-VAR and Volt-Watt control method to improve the stabilization effect of PCC voltage. In the realm of computer systems, efficient utilization of the CPU (Central Processing Unit) has always been a paramount concern. Researchers and engineers have long sought ways to optimize process execution on the CPU, leading to the emergence of CPU scheduling as a field of study. In this research, we have analyzed the single offline batch processing and investigated other sophisticated paradigms such as time-sharing operating systems and wildly used algorithms, and their shortcomings. Our work is directed toward two fundamental aspects of scheduling: efficiency and fairness. We propose a novel algorithm for batch processing that operates on a preemptive model, dynamically assigning priorities based on a robust ratio, employing a dynamic time slice, and utilizing periodic sorting to achieve fairness. By engineering this responsive and fair model, the proposed algorithm strikes a delicate balance between efficiency and fairness, providing an optimized solution for batch scheduling while ensuring system responsiveness. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

This paper develops an implementation of a measurement and control system in which a vehicle follows its predecessor while maintaining a certain distance. First, we construct a model that virtually delays the reference coordinates of the leading target backwards, and propose a control law that follows the steering angle of the following vehicle to that virtual delay point. Next, a range sensor is used to detect the position and orientation of the leader, and the position and orientation is estimated using a template matching method based on the person's body contour point group measured by the sensor. Finally, the effectiveness (including robustness) of the proposed system is demonstrated in some simulations and human tracking experiments. © 2024 IEEE.

Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles are very polluting and release high nitrogen oxides, carcinogens, and soot into the environment. ICE vehicles are the best choice in this era, but replacing ICE vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) and automated vehicle control is a potential transition process. The most important turning point in the history of the automobile occurred with the entry of EVs into the vehicle market. The rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm in electric vehicles (EVs) has changed the way we look at large-scale transportation by making it intelligent and more sustainable. Recently, with the advent of connectivity through IoT platforms, IoT in EVs has improved performance and reduced environmental impact: from any on-off switch and adoption of IoT through our smartphones placed on the charging base. We can implement smart charging solutions for better energy consumption management, reduction of grid load, and battery life enhancement. IoT allows electric vehicles to communicate directly with charging stations and even the power grid, providing a better way to create balanced transportation networks. But implementing IoT in electric vehicles also raises some issues, including data security and user privacy. With all of these issues, there is huge potential in IoT usage with electric vehicles to help produce cleaner transportation and create a more sustainable future. © 2024 IEEE.

The increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) necessitates the efficient management of large EV parking facilities to prevent them from exceeding grid capacity and to improve the overall user experience. This paper introduces a data-driven approach for coordinated control of EV charging in an office parking facility, integrating Early Departure Buttons (EDB) into the system. These buttons provide a binary option for users to indicate an earlier departure than a predefined time. We employ the EDB data to improve departure time estimations and to address issues where EVs receive no or only very low energy. We utilize three datasets originating from different geographical locations. One dataset displays a user pattern where users leave shortly after completing their charging, unlike the other datasets which follow typical working hours. Our simulations show that the unique user pattern significantly increases fairness among users, and integrating EDBs improves fairness for the other datasets to levels similar to those of quick station turnover. © 2024 IEEE.

Demand side management (DSM) applications rely on the exchange of load profiles to effectively manage the operation of energy systems. However, sharing detailed energy profile data raises substantial privacy concerns, such as potential misuse of personal information. To mitigate these concerns, we investigate the potential of time aggregation (TA), which involves merging multiple samples of a profile into a single value representing multiple intervals. TA reduces data exchange and computational requirements in energy management and helps preserve user privacy by reducing granularity of user data. We show that, for an effective implementation of TA in energy management, it is important to make the right choice of TA method. We compare and evaluate seven different TA methods. Furthermore, we perform TA across various time frames using an optimization based DSM approach. Our findings reveal that if we aggregate load profiles from 15 minutes to 4 hours, we obtain both enhanced privacy and a 21% decrease in the required number of iterations with the investigated DSM method, albeit at the cost of a 15% decrease in objective value performance. Based on this, we conclude that depending on the application needs, TA with a carefully selected aggregation method has the potential to bring value to energy management, even when aggregating to a considerable extent. ©2024 IEEE.

The use of inverter-based motor controllers that can generate fast voltage level transitions is increasing in the field of electric drive systems because of their ability to achieve higher efficiency. However, the fast voltage transitions, dv/dt's, are prone to generate bearing currents and cause overvoltages that may harm the electric motor. An LC filter applied between the inverter and the motor terminals can reduce the dv/dt's. However, the LC filter will cause overvoltage due to resonance but this can be overcome by introducing an extra pulse at each pulse-width modulation (PWM) transition. The timing of this extra pulse is crucial for suppressing the resonance, but due to nonlinearities in a real system, the time instants may vary over time and are thus in need of control. In this study, an analytical expression for the optimal pulse location and duration is derived and we propose a control algorithm that continuously calculates the optimal pulse switch time instants based on the measured output voltage. The control algorithm can handle sudden system disturbances and a Monte Carlo simulation is performed to evaluate the performance of the algorithm. This hybrid filter successfully reduces dv/dt's at the motor terminals while simultaneously eliminating overvoltages due to the filter resonance. © 2024 IEEE.

The widespread increase of photovoltaic panels in the distribution grid often leads to overvoltage. Traditional voltage regulation techniques are unfair for prosumers at the sensitive part of the grid due to larger power curtailment. Consequently, there has been considerable research on implementing fair curtailment strategies for congestion management. However, existing fairness-incorporated curtailment approaches yield varying results based on changes in the grid topology and integration of renewable energy sources. Therefore, this paper introduces proportional voltage fairness that is independent of the above-mentioned network properties and inherently distinguishes regions for fair curtailment. Additionally, there is a need to consider the underutilisation of the grid while adhering to a fair curtailment scheme. Thus this paper proposes a control algorithm incorporating proportional voltage fairness and gives the opportunity to specify the trade-off between fairness and the total power curtailed. Further, a comparative analysis with respect to state-of-the-art notions of fairness is performed. ©2024 IEEE.
