This study aims to investigate how the emotional expression of robots and their physical design significantly influence the establishment of emotional bonds with users in Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). Utilizing the commercially available Wheeled Mobile Robot(WMR) designed for service tasks as our experimental platform, we've developed an intuitive interface that enhances emotional and physical interactions. By enriching the robot's emotional expression capabilities and incorporating thoughtful design features-such as LED color variations and ear-like elements-we pave the way for more authentic user experiences. Our upcoming user studies will rigorously evaluate the emotional connections, intimacy, and satisfaction levels that users feel during their interactions with the WMR, employing quantitative and qualitative analyses to measure the effectiveness of each design element. Ultimately, this research underscores the potential for robots to form meaningful relationships with users, making technology more relatable and engaging.

Symbols such as numerical sequences, chemical formulas, and table delimiters exist widely, playing important roles in symbol-related tasks such as abstract reasoning, chemical property prediction, and tabular question-answering. Compared to tasks based on natural language expressions, large language models (LLMs) have limitations in understanding and reasoning on symbol-based representations, making it difficult for them to handle symbol-related problems. In this paper, we propose symbol-to-language (S2L), a method that converts symbol-based representations to language-based representations, providing valuable information for language models during reasoning. We found that, for both closed-source and open-source LLMs, the capability to solve symbol-related problems can be largely enhanced by incorporating such language-based representations. For example, by employing S2L for GPT-4, there can be substantial improvements of +21.9% and +9.5% accuracy for 1D-ARC and Dyck language tasks, respectively. There are also consistent improvements in other six general symbol-related tasks such as table understanding and Tweet analysis. Prostate cancer is a widespread disease in men worldwide, posing challenges in early detection due to its diverse nature and the limitations of current diagnostic techniques. In this study, we have developed a new method that combines CNNs with Vision Transformers (ViTs) to improve the classification of prostate cancer using MRI images. To address data imbalance and enhance model robustness, we used dual synthetic oversampling techniques and data augmentation methods. Our preprocessing pipeline reduced noise, preserved edges, and improved local contrast without amplifying noise. For feature extraction, we utilized the GrayLevel Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and shape-based features to represent complex MRI data better. Among the evaluated architectures, ConvNeXt showed the best performance. Using SMOTE, it achieved an F1-score of 97.21% and a MCC of 95.32%. With ADASYN, performance improved further, reaching an F1-score of 98.82% and an MCC of 97.86%. Additionally, we created a web-based application for realtime analysis of prostate MRI scans, which can aid in clinical decision-making. These results demonstrate the potential of our approach to improve the accuracy of prostate cancer diagnosis and provide an interpretable model for clinical use.

This study proposed a body movement-based system for efficiently controlling robots in large indoor environments. Traditional hand gesture recognition systems experience significant accuracy loss in large indoor spaces, particularly as the distance between the user and the camera grows. To address this issue, clear and large body movements were used as control signals instead of hand movements. For example, participants could give commands to the robot by raising both hands or lifting one hand in a specific direction. The system utilized MediaPipe Pose to track the user's posture in real time and communicated commands from the server to the robot via TCP/IP socket communication. This structure ensured stable data transmission, enabling smooth robot control even in expansive spaces. Consequently, this research demonstrated the feasibility of effective robot control in large indoor areas, such as screen golf courses, and suggested the potential for system expansion in various indoor environments.

Detecting retinal diseases is crucial for preventing vision loss, but it comes with challenges, such as data imbalance and accurately classifying rare conditions. This study introduces a new ensemble transfer learning model that combines EfficientNetB7, SE-ResNet, DenseNet-169, and NASNet to improve the classification of common and rare retinal diseases. The ensemble uses a probability averaging approach to maximise each architecture’s strengths. Essential preprocessing techniques such as Global Contrast Normalization (GCN) and Total Variation Denoising (TVD) were used to enhance image quality. The model was trained and evaluated on the Retinal Fundus Multi-Disease Image Dataset (RFMiD) 2.0, achieving 98.65% accuracy and an F1-score of 0.96% for common diseases and 99.10% accuracy with an F1-score of 0.97 for rare diseases, outperforming individual models significantly. The ensemble has been integrated into a web-based application that allows clinicians to upload retinal images for instant diagnostic feedback, enabling real-time analysis and visual insights. Despite its strengths, challenges such as high computational demands and reliance on high-resolution photos remain. Future work will improve computational efficiency through model compression techniques and extend the model to other imaging modalities, such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). In conclusion, this study presents a robust and scalable solution for retinal disease classification, potentially improving early detection and providing real-time support in clinical settings, particularly in resource-limited environments.

Advances in intensive care have improved the survival rate of patients with severe acute brain injury, but diagnostic errors for patients with disorders of consciousness are still high. Accurate diagnosis of these patients is very important because effective treatment can vary depending on the diagnosis. In this study, we propose a framework for classifying unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and minimally conscious state, focusing on awareness. In particular, power spectral density and common spatial patterns were used together, considering that spatial information is a key feature in consciousness. The 16 patients with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and 14 with minimally conscious state underwent resting-state electroencephalography measurements. In addition, we compared the performance by utilizing each frequency (delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma bands) related to consciousness. As a result, the highest accuracy of 95.06% was achieved by the EEGNet classifier, especially in the beta frequency band. We demonstrated that spatial information is very important in consciousness, as we observed that classification performance improved when common spatial patterns were used. These results provide insight into various frameworks for diagnosing patients with disorders of consciousness and may help patients survive by increasing the diagnosis rate in the future. © 2025 IEEE.

The metaverse, a dynamic blend of virtual and augmented reality, holds extraordinary promise for reshaping the healthcare landscape. By integrating advanced technologies such as virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and digital twins, the metaverse introduces transformative opportunities in patient care, medical education, and healthcare operations. These tools foster immersive, personalized, and data-driven environments, significantly improving diagnostic precision, therapeutic strategies, and training methodologies. This paper provides a framework to utilize this potential while navigating key concerns, including systems scale, user customization, and ethical adequacy. In that case, the framework's goal should be eliminating existing limitations and barriers within healthcare systems by utilizing state-of-the-art technologies with real-world applications. The framework involves virtual consultation sites that enable provider-patient interactions, intelligent virtual agents with specific care recommendations, blockchain integration for data integrity, and dynamic VR segments that are functional in delivering healthcare education and training. The study focuses on scenario-based modeling and the use of pilot deployment in various healthcare settings to test for practicability and feasibility. The research also emphasizes that ethical issues and inclusion during the design and implementation of the innovations should also consider society's values regarding the medical field and promote equal access to healthcare. This framework proves a comprehensive blueprint for continuous progress and places the metaverse as one cornerstone in the global healthcare system.

The frontline in developing the capabilities of chatbots and virtual assistants involves the use of NLP, enabling these machines to evolve into truly advanced, interactive machines that are able to comprehend and respond to human language with an almost unimaginable degree of accuracy. The paper will analyze some of the major NLP techniques and methodologies used for such systems: machine learning algorithms, neural networks, and semantic analysis. This would also mean that, with the help of big data and continuous learning, the work of chatbots and virtual assistants will range from answering queries to personalized recommendations. Language understanding, generation, and context management are discussed in detail, underlining how NLP improves user experience by making interactions more natural and intuitive. The challenges of ambiguous language processing, conversational context, and ensuring data privacy and security are discussed as well. Case studies and applications in real life show the impact of NLP on different sectors: customer service, healthcare, and e-commerce. The findings bring out the potential of NLP to change human-computer interaction and allow for more responsive and intelligent digital assistants.

Eggplant diseases present major challenges to agricultural productivity, leading to yield losses and threatening farmers livelihoods. Traditional diagnostic methods tend to be resource-intensive, subjective, and often inaccurate, making them unsuitable for large-scale use. This study addresses these shortcomings by proposing an Ensemble Transfer Learning (ETL) approach for precise classification of eggplant diseases. The model combines the strengths of ConvNeXt, EfficientNetV2, NFNet, and RegNet architectures, enhancing generalization and minimizing overfitting. Two datasets containing over 19,800 images were utilized for training and validation, with advanced preprocessing and data augmentation techniques applied to ensure high input data quality and model robustness. To assess performance, evaluation metrics such as accuracy, F1-score, MCC, and PR-AUC were used. The model achieved an impressive classification accuracy of 99.76%, surpassing state-of-the-art methods and demonstrating strong generalization across various conditions. A web-based application was also developed, enabling real-time disease diagnostics through a user-friendly interface. This application provides farmers with actionable insights, promoting sustainable farming practices by reducing crop losses and minimizing the need for chemical interventions. However, its reliance on high-quality labeled images limits its applicability in uncontrolled environments. Future research will aim to integrate more diverse datasets and develop mobile-based solutions to enhance scalability and usability. This study emphasizes the potential of ensemble transfer learning to transform agricultural disease diagnosis and improve crop productivity.

The increasing demands of data computation and storage for cloud-based services motivate the development and deployment of large-scale data centers (DCs). The energy demand of these devices is rising rapidly and becoming a noticeable challenge for current power networks. The smart grid (SG) is deemed as the future power system paradigm enabling more affordable and sustainable energy supply, which can effectively relieve the load pressure from DCs. Moreover, with growing concerns regarding harmful emissions due to combustion of fossil fuels, the exploitation of renewable energy sources (RES) has attracted extensive attention, which can benefit SGs and DCs, as well as society at large. However, the geo-distributed property of DCs and SGs and the uncertain nature of RES production pose severe challenges to the optimal management of computation and energy resources in such a tripartite coupling system. Focusing on these issues, a joint energy and computation workload management framework is proposed for enabling a sustainable DC paradigm with distributed RES. Specifically, a three-layer game is formulated to model the iterations among entities including the energy market, data center operators (DCOs), and SGs. The market includes a certain amount of RES that must be dispatched. The SG offers the DCO an electricity selling price while simultaneously importing RES from the market at a buying price in order to maximize the benefit. The DCO allocates the workload to different DCs, aiming to minimize the costs of energy consumption and carbon emissions. The interactive processes between different entities are further decomposed into two coupling Stackelberg games. We obtain the equilibrium state of the game and prove its uniqueness and optimality. Simulation experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the joint energy and computation workload management scheme and show its superiority over counterparts in utilizing renewable energy and reducing emissions.
