The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the future observatory for ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Each telescope will provide a snapshot of gamma-ray induced particle showers by capturing the induced Cherenkov emission at ground level. The simulation of such events provides camera images that can be used as training data for convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to differentiate signals from background events and to determine the energy of the initial gamma-ray events. Pattern spectra are commonly used tools for image classification and provide the distributions of the sizes and shapes of features comprising an image. The application of pattern spectra on a CNN allows the selection of relevant combinations of features within an image. In this work, we generate pattern spectra from simulated gamma-ray images to train a CNN for signal-background separation and energy reconstruction for CTA. We compare our results to a CNN trained with CTA images and find that the pattern spectra-based analysis is computationally less expensive but not competitive with the purely CTA images-based analysis. Thus, we conclude that the CNN must rely on additional features in the CTA images not captured by the pattern spectra. © Copyright owned by the author(s)

Microgrids have gained more popularity with advancement in renewable energy technology, mainly solar. While the boom in renewable technology has provided an alternative solution for energy crisis and depleting conventional sources, their intermittent nature has raised various control and protection issues. In both AC and DC microgrids, protection issues remain similar except the fact that in DC microgrids protection becomes more critical due to absence of natural current zero. This paper proposes a novel adaptive protection strategy, which acclimates as per the system condition and configuration. The protection scheme is designed and developed for a low voltage hierarchical controlled DC microgrid. A three-layer hierarchical control stacked with a local control, an emergency control and a supervisory control is used. Local controllers control the converters associated with the source to achieve source optimization and provide local power flow control. Emergency control is realized with a microgrid protection and control supervisor (MPCS). When fault or sudden large change in load occurs, the stability of system gets critical. Quick and accurate differentiation of normal and abnormal operating conditions becomes essential. The MPCS takes over the control in such situations. The absolute values and rate of change of voltage and current measured at multiple points in the system, helps MPCS to act precisely and quickly. The supervisory control updates MPCS to adapt to the current state of the system with the help of pre-calculated modified fault levels. Texas Instruments' TMS320F28069 digital signal processors (DSP) are utilized for the implementation of proposed microgrid protection scheme.

Extracting build changes with builddiff

Build systems are an essential part of modern software engineering projects. As software projects change continuously, it is crucial to understand how the build system changes because neglecting its maintenance can lead to expensive build breakage. Recent studies have investigated the (co-)evolution of build configurations and reasons for build breakage, but they did this only on a coarse grained level. In this paper, we present BUILDDIFF, an approach to extract detailed build changes from MAVEN build files and classify them into 95 change types. In a manual evaluation of 400 build changing commits, we show that BUILDDIFF can extract and classify build changes with an average precision and recall of 0.96 and 0.98, respectively. We then present two studies using the build changes extracted from 30 open source Java projects to study the frequency and time of build changes. The results show that the top 10 most frequent change types account for 73% of the build changes. Among them, changes to version numbers and changes to dependencies of the projects occur most frequently. Furthermore, our results show that build changes occur frequently around releases. With these results, we provide the basis for further research, such as for analyzing the (co-)evolution of build files with other artifacts or improving effort estimation approaches. Furthermore, our detailed change information enables improvements of refactoring approaches for build configurations and improvements of models to identify error-prone build files. In this paper, we propose a discriminative keypoint selection-based 3D face recognition method that is superior to prevalent techniques in terms of both computational complexity and performance. We use the average face model (AFM) for face registration to efficiently locate the axis of symmetry in the rotated face mesh and recover a full frontal face from a 3D face model commonly corrupted due to pose variances. Instead of using the keypoint detection method, we use the feature selection algorithm to find the most discriminant keypoints for face identification and reduce computational time for not only feature extraction but also keypoint matching. The results of the experiments conducted on the Bosphorus database and the UMBDB show that our algorithm can improve rank-1 identification accuracy, thus confirming its robustness against pose variances, expressions, and occlusions.

Even experienced engineers are not able to easily adopt a new methodology. software product line (SPL) engineering is being considered as a new paradigm for the systematic reuse of software with a pre-defined plan and well-verified assets. However, several organizations have difficulties in applying this model because every project is not developed from scratch and there are not enough SPL engineers. Consequently, many organizations are interested in an extractive approach for applying SPL. In this paper, a new feature extraction method is proposed. This approach begins from a user interface model and an object model. To realize a more precise model, the goal-scenario coupling is integrated to identify the features. The suggested method requires a longer time to construct the feature model than the proactive approach;however, it is more complete. Copyright ISCA, SEDE 2017.

Mobile phone log data (e.g., phone call log) is not static as it is progressively added to day-by-day according to individual's diverse behaviors with mobile phones. Since human behavior changes over time, the most recent pattern is more interesting and significant than older ones for predicting individual's behavior. The goal of this poster paper is to identify the recent behavioral data length dynamically from the entire phone log for recency-based behavior modeling. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first dynamic recent log-based study that takes into account individual's recent behavioral patterns for modeling their phone call behaviors. The basis for this project was to attempt to improve upon searches for neighboring zipcodes. Simple search algorithms lack the granularity to properly determine nearby zipcodes. In this paper, we include data concerning the boundaries of each zip code area which are then indexed using a new grid-based distance mapping approach to answer neighboring searches. Searches with this method become significantly more accurate at the expense of time. Furthermore, several methods of optimization are examined to demonstrate how they can bring the search time down to more reasonable threshold. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper aims at developing an operative and reliable internal Planar Inverted F Antenna (PIFA) for mobile phone utilization with designed frequency bands at GSM900, GSM1800/1900, UMTS2100 and LTE2300/2500. Additionally, a feasible PIFA with operating band locates at GPS L4 band (1.8414GHz) is also investigated for GPS satellite framing signal receiving and transmission in a mobile phone. The property disparities between reference and designed antenna are explored and discussed.

*** becomes increasingly popular in building server-side JavaScript applications. It adopts an event-driven model, which supports asynchronous I/O and non-deterministic event processing. This asynchrony and non-determinism can introduce intricate concurrency bugs, and leads to unpredictable behaviors. An in-dept. understanding of real world concurrency bugs in *** applications will significantly promote effective techniques in bug detection, testing and fixing for ***. In this paper, we present NodeCB, a comprehensive study on real world concurrency bugs in *** applications. Specifically, we have carefully studied 57 real bug cases from open-source *** applications, and have analyzed their bug characteristics, e.g., bug patterns and root causes, bug impacts, bug manifestation, and fix strategies. Through this study, we obtain several interesting findings, which may open up many new research directions in combating concurrency bugs in ***. For example, one finding is that two thirds of the bugs are caused by atomicity violation. However, due to lack of locks and transaction mechanism, *** cannot easily express and guarantee the atomic intention.
