Sensing systems are moving out of the laboratory and into the real world, where they are being applied in a growing range of application scenarios. In order to increase effectiveness and efficacy as well as the return on investment, sensor systems must increasingly become easily reconfigurable and adjustable, in order to support system evolution and optimization. Currently, software technologies for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) lack the feature of dynamic sensing. This proposed project tackles the critical problem of developing software technologies and specifically middleware support that reduces the complexity of developing and managing dynamic sensing systems. Achieving this vision within the resource constraints of contemporary systems requires a radical rethinking of classic middleware design and the development of a suite of efficient supporting tools. This paper presents our on-going research which focuses on enhancing the component model along with features of dynamic sensing, with innovative components implemented based on the middleware platform LooCI (The Loosely-coupled Component Infrastructure), which has gained widespread popularity. Technological outcomes of this research will be validated in the domain of logistics, but their applications can be extended to various industrial areas.

As software systems play an increasingly important role in our lives, their complexity continues to increase. The increased complexity of software systems makes the assurance of their quality very difficult. Therefore, a significant amount of recent research focuses on the prioritization of software quality assurance efforts. One line of work that has been receiving an increasing amount of attention for over 40 years is software defect prediction, where predictions are made to determine where future defects might appear. Since then, there have been many studies and many accomplishments in the area of software defect prediction. At the same time, there remain many challenges that face that field of software defect prediction. The paper aims to accomplish four things. First, we provide a brief overview of software defect prediction and its various components. Second, we revisit the challenges of software prediction models as they were seen in the year 2000, in order to reflect on our accomplishments since then. Third, we highlight our accomplishments and current trends, as well as, discuss the game changers that had a significant impact on software defect prediction. Fourth, we highlight some key challenges that lie ahead in the near (and not so near) future in order for us as a research community to tackle these future challenges.

E-government portals are changing the way citizens are dealing with their governments. The e-government services can be executed by citizens without any location or time constraints, which results in great benefits for them. Therefore, agencies should follow worldwide e-government portals' best practices that would contribute in the portals' quality. E-government maturity models can be used for this purpose. The purpose of this paper is to propose an e-government portals' maturity model that is based on a best practice model for e-government portals. This maturity model can help agencies identify their maturity rank by measuring the presence of those best practices. At the same time, the maturity model can provide guidelines and recommendations for agencies to move to an upper stage of maturity.

Eliciting requirements in their real-world contexts and creating and transforming visual models which can help lead to early designs of software is a challenging and time-consuming step in software engineering processes. In order to support the creation of these models and generate artifacts useful for software designs, we have developed the Problem-to-Design tool (PROD) based on Jackson's Problem Frames approach. The tool has been inspired by the work in the behavior-driven development community, which recommends that testing codes be generated as early as in the requirements engineering phase. The tool provides an open portal where multiple stakeholders can draw their own problem diagrams online, which can be used to generate use case narratives and testing codes for further behavior-driven development.

This paper describes a two-part system that helps developers understand how to search and reuse complex software libraries. First, we present an approach for automatic retrieval of software components in reuse libraries. Second, the system implements a source-code recommendation approach which automatically constructs and delivers relevant code examples that demonstrate how the retrieved components can be used to solve particular programming problems. In arriving at such solutions, we utilize ontological modeling to provide semantic representation of the conceptual source-code knowledge in software libraries. This representation is the basis for computing entailments and enabling semantic reasoning. Our experiments show evidence that combining ontology formalisms with context-sensitive techniques enhance precision when retrieving and recommending reusable code even without mining a carefully crafted corpus of similar code.

Wireless body sensor network (WBSN) technologies are considered one of attracting research areas in computer science. When combined with the healthcare application, it provides high value technology of comprehensive healthcare monitoring solution in extreme situations including high altitude or disaster area enabling the ground controller to monitor remote pilots or earthquake victims in real time by combination of wireless sensors and sensor networks. Sensor networks are irregular clusters of communicating sensor nodes, which collect and process information from onboard sensors, and they can share some of this information with neighboring nodes. By recent technological advances in the integration of ultra-low power networks of miniatured sensors, embedded microcontrollers and radio interfaces on an all-in-one chip can collect important physiologic informations from the surrounding environment efficiently. In addition, the sensed physiological data transmitted to a remote healthcare provider can be modulated and fed back by processing software such as artificial intelligence system enriching capability of the sensor network. In this study, we develop a wireless body sensor network which integrates different physiological sensors with radiointerface to sense physiological data from a human body, and then rehearses to transmits the data to a remote healthcare cloud through a smartphone as an interface. Test results for simulated measurements of wireless transmission and emulation in a smartphone are given and discussed.

Currently, there are many applications used vector map data widely. But the production of vector map consumes a lot of money and human resource while vector map data is bought by any user or attacked by pirates, and then they distributed vector map data easily without permission from providers. So, provider desires a method to encrypt vector map data before storing and transmitting to ensure the access control and prevent illegal copying of it. This paper presents a perceptual encryption method for vector map data based on encrypting geometric objects in the frequency domain of discrete cosine transform. Geometric objects in vector map are changed by geometric transformations. After that, they are encrypted selectivity in the frequency domain of discrete cosine transform to obtain encrypted objects. In experiments, vector map data is changed entirely after encryption process, and the proposed method is very effective for a large of vector map datasets.

This paper introduces the concepts of functional size measurement (FSM) patterns. These FSM patterns apply to the COSMIC FSM method and may help in solving several issues, such as being able to do an early sizing for estimation, helping inexperienced measurers in learning how to apply the COSMIC method by establishing the relationship between the method rules and the measurement results, avoiding measurement errors, and reducing measurement effort. The approach used to define FSM patterns is Design Science Research. This paper explores the motivation factors, defines the objectives of the solution, and describes the design and development of FSM patterns. FSM patterns can be defined for a portion of a functional process, a single functional process type, a set of functional process types having a main data group - or object of interest - as their common starting point, or a large set of functional processes handling multiple data groups. These types of FSM patterns have been defined as "micro FSM pattern", "basic FSM pattern", "composite FSM pattern", and "multi-composite FSM pattern" respectively. FSM patterns examples are given to demonstrate their applicability in information systems for all four FSM pattern types. Application of FSM pattern with embedded real-time systems is discussed, along with other potential usage benefits for the industry.

Nowadays, replication technique is widely used in data center storage systems for large scale Cyber-physical Systems (CPS) to prevent data loss. However, side-effect of replication is mainly the overhead of extra network and I/O traffics, which inevitably downgrades the overall I/O performance of the cluster. To effectively balance the trade-off between I/O performance and fault tolerance, in this paper, we propose a complete solution called “AutoReplica” - a replica manager in distributed caching and data processing systems with SSD-HDD tier storages. In detail, AutoReplica utilizes the remote SSDs (connected by high speed fibers) to replicate local SSD caches to protect data. In order to conduct load balancing among nodes and reduce the network overhead, we propose three approaches (i.e., ring, network, and multiple-SLA network) to automatically setup the cross-node replica structure with the consideration of network traffic, I/O speed and SLAs. To improve the performance during migrations triggered by load balance and failure recovery, we propose the a migrate-on-write technique called “fusion cache” to seamlessly migrate and prefetch among local and remote replicas without pausing the subsystem. Moreover, AutoReplica can also recover from different failure scenarios, while limits the performance downgrading degree. Lastly, AutoReplica supports parallel prefetching from multiple nodes with a new dynamic optimizing streaming technique to improve I/O performance. We are currently in the process of implementing AutoReplica to be easily plugged into commonly used distributed caching systems, and solidifying our design and implementation details.

Effective decision-making to improve healthcare for people depends essentially upon availability of reliable health data. Several developing countries have maternal health indicators lagging behind as compared to international targets set by the UN as Millennium or Sustainable Development Goals. One of the major reasons is poor and non-standardized maternal health record keeping that affect data quality and undermines evidence-based decision making. The aim of this research is the design and development of HL7 FHIR compliant data access model for maintaining maternal health data as FHIR resources to enable effective exchange of health data. The proposed model is implemented as restful web services and data is stored in a NoSQL database for flexibility. To evaluate effectiveness, the system was reviewed by healthcare providers and expectant women. Their feedback highlights the usefulness of the proposed system as compared to traditional record keeping techniques. It is anticipated that the proposed system will lay the foundation of a comprehensive maternal healthcare information system. This shall enable trend analysis for policy-making to help accelerate the efforts for meeting global maternal health targets.
