This work studies the problem of identifying risk factors of Small for Gestational Age (SGA) and building classifiers for SGA prediction. Recently, SGA infants have received more and more concerns as this illness brings many difficulties to them along with their whole life. Some experts have begun to study the risk factors of SGA onset by using traditional statistical ways. Others have used logistic regression (LR) to construct SGA prediction models. Meanwhile, machine learning have evolved and envisioned as a tool able to potentially identify babies with SGA. This work tests several feature selection methods. Based on the risk factors obtained through them, it trains support vector machine, random forest, and LR models and evaluates them via 10-fold cross validation in terms of precision and area under the curve of receiver operator characteristic curve. The results show that sparse LR of the wrapper algorithms owns the best feature selection effectiveness. In addition, this work compares data driven factors and knowledge driven factors and shows that the feature selection is necessary and effective. Among the trained classifiers, the LR model achieves the best performance on the data driven factors.

We investigate trade-offs between traffic adaptation and VLSI architecture adaptation in C-RAN platforms. We propose a dynamic architectural scaling technique applied to interactive applications that require FFT computations. Our implementation results suggest Datapath scaling benefits applications with up to 4.89x improvement in GOPS/mW, while Fabric scaling can benefit Cloud Computing applications with up to 181.97x improvement in GOPS/mW, when compared to published methods. Improvements in network performance and energy-efficiency was achieved at a cost of built-in flexibility in the proposed VLSI architectures.

In this Paper, we propose a new method for safe electrical neural stimulation. Current mode digital-to-analog converters are used to generate the cathodic and the anodic stimulation phases. A sample-and-hold and a window comparator circuit are used to compare the voltage of the electrode and the tissue with a target value within a safe voltage range of -50 mV to +50 mV. When the electrode voltage falls below the lower bound or above the upper bound of such a safe voltage range, the anodic stimulation pulse width is modified in such a way that the electrode voltage remains in the safe range. High-level pulse shrinking (HLPS) and low-level pulse shrinking (HLPS) elements are used in digital part to modify anodic pulse width. Simulation results for the proposed circuit implemented in a 0.18μm 1P6M CMOS technology confirm proper functioning and show that the proposed circuit requires extremely low power compared to other charge balancing schemes, with a power consumption of 4.2 μW.

Business analytics is an important means of gaining new insights and understanding of business performance. Data mining technology provides information needed by business analytics based on data. But due to the barriers of skill, resource and cost, business analytics is hard to carry out and put into practice for small and even medium sized enterprises. This paper presents a novel concept named Highly Consumable Business Analytics (HCBA) aiming to improve consumability of business analytics. We discuss the ways to simplify the use of data mining algorithms, establish end-to-end integrated lifecycle management of model and ultimately wrap models into web service to provide model-wise services. We propose a general reference architecture of HCBA. And a prototype is designed and implemented based on this architecture.

The majority of existing application profiling techniques ag- gregate and report performance costs by method or call- ing context. Modern large-scale object-oriented applications consist of thousands of methods with complex calling pat- terns. Consequently, when profiled, their performance costs tend to be thinly distributed across many thousands of loca- tions with few easily identifiable optimisation opportunities. However experienced performance engineers know that there are repeated patterns of method calls in the execution of an application that are induced by the libraries, design patterns and coding idioms used in the software. Automati- cally identifying and aggregating costs over these patterns of method calls allows us to identify opportunities to improve performance based on optimising these patterns. We have developed an analysis technique that is able to identify the entry point methods, which we call subsuming methods, of such patterns. Our ofiine analysis runs over previously collected runtime performance data structured in a calling context tree, such as produced by a large number of existing commercial and open source profilers. We have evaluated our approach on the DaCapo bench- mark suite, showing that our analysis significantly reduces the size and complexity of the runtime performance data set, facilitating its comprehension and interpretation. We also demonstrate, with a collection of case studies, that our analysis identifies new optimisation opportunities that can lead to significant performance improvements (from 20% to over 50% improvement in our case studies). Dynamic spectrum access is regarded as a backbone for cognitive radio networks where unlicensed secondary users (SUs) access spectrum opportunistically which is licensed to licensed primary users (PUs). SUs are required to identify the idle bands and use them dynamically without creating any harmful interference to PUs. In dynamic spectrum access for peer-to-peer based communications, SU transmitter and its intended SU receiver must use common channel to communicate. Note that the fixed common control channel could not be viable in case of jamming attacks and wideband regime. Thus in this paper, we present a test bed using Universal software Radio Peripheral (NI USRP) devices. We use Lab View® and MATLAB® scripting extensions to program NI USRP devices for peer-to-peer communications. Once SU transmitter and receiver pair knows idle channels, they use one of the best idle channels to communicate. We study sequential channel scanning and quorum based rendezvous methods without using any common control channels. These two schemes are compared in terms of their performance for finding suitable channel. Test bed is developed to test these schemes. Numerical results are presented obtained from test bed. © 2015 IEEE.

Optical Network-on-Chip (ONoC) is an emerging technology considered as one of the key solutions for future generation on-chip interconnects. However, silicon photonic devices in ONoC are highly sensitive to temperature variation, which leads to a lower efficiency of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs), a resonant wavelength shift of Microring Resonators (MR), and results in a lower Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). In this paper, we propose a methodology enabling thermal-aware design for optical interconnects relying on CMOS-compatible VCSEL. Thermal simulations allow designing ONoC interfaces with low gradient temperature and analytical models allow evaluating the SNR.

Node-pore sensing (NPS) enables label-free phenotypic profiling of single cells and is based on measuring the current pulse caused by a cell transiting a microfluidic channel segmented by a series of nodes. While demonstrated to screen 5 different surface markers simultaneously, NPS is limited due to its low throughput and the difficulty in analyzing complex pulses due to multiple cells transiting the channel simultaneously. Here, we describe the next-generation NPS in which we adapt coding and detection concepts from radar and telecommunication methods to overcome these specific challenges. © 15CBMS-0001.

software Defined Network (SDN) is an emerging paradigm for flexible network design and implementation. Availability metric of SDNs is critically demanding further studies. This paper aims to propose hierarchical models to assess the availability of SDNs. We incorporate various failure modes and recovery behaviors in the SDN including (i) link failures at network level, and (ii) software and hardware failures at network device level. We use hierarchical models in which a Reliability Graph (RG) is used to represent the reachability of hosts (and switches) in the SDN at the upper level and Stochastic Reward Net (SRN)s are used to represent the detailed failure and recovery of network devices at the lower level, respectively. We incorporate the programmable capability of the SDN at the upper level (i.e., the RG). We perform numerical analysis to assess the availability of the SDN in terms of steady state availability and downtime in minutes per year, and we also show the sensitivity analysis.

We investigate the problem of power balancing in a general renewable-integrated power grid with storage and flexible loads. We consider a power grid that is supplied by one conventional generator (CG) and multiple renewable generators (RGs) each co-located with storage, and is additionally connected with external markets. An aggregator operates the power grid and aims at minimizing the long-term system cost. We propose a distributed real-time power balancing solution, taking into account the uncertainty of the renewable generation, loads, and energy prices. We demonstrate that our proposed algorithm is asymptotically optimal as the storage capacity increases and the CG ramping constraint loosens. The distributed implementation enjoys a fast convergence rate and enables each RG and the aggregator to make their own decisions.
