We consider a wireless cellular network with multiple amplify-and-forward (AF) relays in each cell, assisting the communication of multiple source-destination pairs with relay transmission beamforming. Our objective is to minimize the maximum interference power among all active receivers in a neighboring cell subject to per-relay power and minimum received SNR constraints. We propose an efficient algorithm to obtain the optimal relay beamforming vectors. We show that even though the optimization problem is non-convex, it has zero Lagrange duality gap and can be converted to a semi-definite programming problem. The performance of the proposed algorithm is studied numerically, both for the case where the interference channel information is exactly known and for the case of inaccurate channel information due to either limited feedback or channel estimation error. It is demonstrated that the min-max interference approach substantially outperforms the alternative where we simply minimize the maximum relay transmission power.

We consider a mobile cloud computing scenario consisting of one user with multiple independent tasks, one computing access point (CAP), and one remote cloud server. The CAP can either process the received tasks from the mobile user or offload them to the cloud, providing additional computation capability over traditional mobile cloud computing systems. We aim to optimize the offloading decision of the user to minimize the overall cost of energy, computation, and delay. It is shown that the problem can be formulated as a non-convex quadratically constrained quadratic program, which is NP-hard in general. We propose an efficient offloading decision algorithm by semidefinite relaxation and a novel randomization mapping method. Our simulation results show that the proposed algorithm gives nearly optimal performance with only a small number of randomization iterations, and adding CAPs to the traditional dichotomy of mobile devices and remote cloud servers can drastically improve mobile cloud computing performance.

Decision making process is crucial in several stages of clinical procedures. On the other hand, there are not many studies showing the implications of decision support systems in clinical environments. Hence, adaptation of Decision Support Systems to clinical environment is getting more important as we can collect more data through sensors and yet cannot use it effectively in decision making process. This study aims to understand the effects, benefits and obstacles utilizing CDSS in healthcare. For this purpose, 60 CDSS studies were analyzed to better understand their purpose, implementation domain, and success degrees in the world. Also, a case study was made for analyzing the situation in Turkey. The results show that in the field of neurosurgery, the level of analysis of neurosurgical data in Turkey is very low. The results show an urgent need for collaboration of IT experts and medical authorities to better record and analyze clinical data in the field of neurosurgery.

Cellular and device-to-device (D2D) communication may cause significant inter-cell interference (ICI) at a neighboring base station (BS). In this work, we aim to maximize the sum rate of a cellular user (CU) and a D2D pair, with receive beamforming at the BS equipped with multiple antennas, subject to per-node power, maximum ICI, and minimum SINR constraints. We propose an efficient algorithm to maximize the sum rate in two steps. We first consider the D2D admissibility problem to determine whether the D2D pair can share the spectrum with the CU while satisfying all the constraints and SINR requirements. We then obtain the optimal beam vector and the optimal power levels of the CU and D2D transmitters in closed form. The performance of the proposed algorithm is studied numerically. It is shown the proposed optimal solution substantially outperforms a CU-priority heuristic approach that selects the maximum CU power with minimum D2D interference.

MapReduce is popular for big data analytics because it offers easy-to-use map and reduce user interfaces while hiding the complexity of system scalability and fault resiliency issues. While a large body of literature has focused on improving the performance and scalability of MapReduce, the issue of fault resiliency has thus far received little attention. In this paper, we take on an effort to investigate the fault resiliency of MapReduce using YARN (the next-generation Hadoop) as a case study. We reveal that the failures of a MapTask, a ReduceTask or a compute node can cause distinctly different impact to MapReduce programs. Particularly, YARN MapReduce is not able to gracefully handle failures that involve ReduceTasks, causing prolonged task execution, delayed job completion, and, more severely, failure amplifications due to the cascading effects to other tasks. These problems together cause the performance collapse of MapReduce jobs. In this paper, we introduce a new fault-tolerant framework that can crack down failure amplification and gracefully handle failure scenarios. It is designed with two key fault handling techniques: analytics logging and speculative fast migration. Analytics logging is a light-weight mechanism that logs the key progress information of MapReduce tasks, speculative fast migration handles node failures by proactively re-executing MapTasks, migrating ReduceTasks, and collective merging with a pipeline of shuffle/merge and reduce stages. Our performance evaluation demonstrates that these techniques can eliminate failure amplification and deliver fast job execution compared to the existing task re-execution mechanism in MapReduce.

The effectiveness of local or global features has recently attracted growing attention in the field of texture image classification and retrieval. The features of the local binary pattern (LBP) for instance, usually lack global spatial information while global descriptors would provide very little local information. This paper proposes two different descriptors to circumvent these shortcomings by providing more information to describe different textural structures of the Emphysema computed tomography (CT) images. The proposed LBP+Multi-fractal Images (LMI) and the rotational invariant LBP+Multi-fractal Images (RLMI) can provide more accurate classification results by using a hybrid concatenation of the local and global features. The experimental approaches are validated for different scales of Emphysema images during the classification process in order to determine the appropriate image size that could yield the maximum classification accuracy. The experimental results show that the descriptors extracted from the combined features considerably improve the performance of the classifiers. The results also indicate that the LMI descriptor outperforms the earlier approaches and demonstrate the discriminating power and robustness of the combined features for accurate classification of Emphysema CT images.

Human computer Interactivity plays a vital role in a web application's success. A survey evaluation was undertaken of a web application prototype named "My Portfolio", directed towards the students of different universities. The aim of the survey was to find the shortcomings in the interface design, whether it followed the design principles and if the web application is user-friendly. A questionnaire, consisting of 16 questions was distributed among the students. The questions were made after studying some basic Human computer Interaction design principles. The overall assessment of the web application was very positive and some evaluators mentioned that they liked the simplicity and color scheme of the application. We summarize the findings of our study and discuss the issues that need to be resolved in the next prototype.
