We present an experiment comparing five ammunition display methods in first-person shooter (FPS) games. These included both diegetic (in-game) and heads-up display (HUD) options. HUD displays included a bar, icons, and a counter. Diegetic displays were displayed in-game beside the player's weapon. Two diegetic displays were evaluated: a number and bullets. We compared the performance offered by each ammunition display and player preference towards each. Results indicate that the diegetic "number-in-game" display performed best both in terms of reload time and shots taken between running out of ammunition and reloading. Participants fired an average of 35% fewer shots after running out of ammo with the number-in-game display than with the worst performing display, icons-on-HUD. Reload time was also 26% faster with the number-in-game display than with icons-on-HUD. The number-in-game display was preferred by 70% of participants.

Wave scattering is the process according to which a wave is forced to deviate from its trajectory. In Minkowski space, an electromagnetic wave propagating in a homogeneous medium follows a light-like trajectory (world line). Here, we explore electromagnetic wave scattering at general discontinuities in Minkowski space, corresponding to change in the medium parameters in spacetime. The analysis reveals similarities and differences in wave scattering between spatial and temporal discontinuities. In both cases, a frequency shift (spatial and temporal, respectively) takes place, while in a medium with temporal discontinuities multiple reflections do not occur due to causality.

Brain activity is usually measured by non-invasive modalities. Inter alia, the electroencephalogram (EEG) is used most commonly. However, EEG is very sensitive to other biosignals, so other bio-signal detection modalities must be used as supplementary systems. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has good characteristics for use as such a supplementary modality, because brain activities can be measured by fNIRS through hemodynamic responses. Therefore, many scientists have adopted fNIRS for brain machine interface (BCI). Recently, fNIRS has become more compact and is robust to noise, so it could bring us to the development of an effective wearable BCI.

The growing demand for the monitoring of patients, and the potential promise of cloud computing has allowed considering a number of cloud-based systems and services for health care. The cloud computing, in combination with the popularity of smart handheld devices has inspired healthcare professionals to remotely monitor patients' health while the patient is at home. To this end, this paper proposes a cloud-assisted face recognition framework for health monitoring. In this framework, handheld devices or video cameras collect face images and delivered to the cloud server for possible analysis and classification. Experiments are performed to validate the proposed approach and to evaluate the suitability of the framework in terms of accuracy and time. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach compared to the face processing in local server.

Multi-bit sigma-delta based digital pulse width modulators (DPWM) are used in the control of DC-DC converters in order to achieve high resolution and therefore high output voltage accuracy at switching frequencies up to multiple MHz. The standard sigma-delta modulators which have mainly been used in these DPWMs to date generate idle tones in the applied duty cycle which result in large oscillations in the output voltage. A dithered sigma-delta modulator is instead implemented here which eliminates these oscillations in the output voltage by adding a random signal before the quantizer in the sigma-delta modulator. The power spectral density of the duty cycle produced by the dithered sigma-delta modulator based DPWM shows a reduction in the undesirable idle tones and this is also verified experimentally using a buck converter prototype.

We have investigated whether Agile practices can be applied as a pedagogical approach to derive benefit in the areas of encouraging students to take responsibility for their learning (self managed learning), continuous improvement through reflection, alternative approaches for grading, increased engagement by learners, and more effective data collection and assessment of outcomes. Agile is an umbrella term for values, principles and practices applied to the process of software development. The Agile movement has aimed to develop a new and better culture within the software development community and has seen an increased rate of adoption within corporate settings. The goal of this workshop is to help participants explore how Agile development, a management technique borne out of the software industry, can not only change the way that students engage in project-based and team-based course projects, but also transform the way that we educate our students.

The many cores design research community have shown high interest in optical crossbars on chip for more than a decade. Key properties of optical crossbars, namely a) contention-free data routing b) low-latency communication and c) potential for high bandwidth through the use of WDM, motivate several implementations. These implementations demonstrate very different scalability and power efficiency ability depending on three key design factors: a) the network topology, b) the considered layout and c) the insertion losses induced by the fabrication process. The emerging design technique relying on multi-layer deposited silicon allows reducing optical losses, which may lead to significant reduction of the power consumption. In this paper, multi-layer deposited silicon based crossbars are proposed and compared. The results indicate that the proposed ring-based network exhibits, on average, 22% and 51.4% improvement for worst-case and average losses respectively compared to the most power-efficient related crossbars.

This paper presents a supervised learning approach to support the screening of HIV literature. The manual screening of biomedical literature is an important task in the process of systematic reviews. Researchers and curators have the very demanding, time-consuming and error-prone task of manually identifying documents that must be included in a systematic review concerning a specific problem. We implemented a supervised learning approach to support screening tasks, by automatically flagging potentially selected documents in a list retrieved by a literature database search. To overcome the main issues associated with the automatic literature screening task, we evaluated the use of data sampling, feature combinations, and feature selection methods, generating a total of 105 classification models. The models yielding best results were composed by the Logistic Model Trees classifier, a fairly balanced training set, and feature combination of Bag-Of-Words and MeSH terms. According to our results, the system correctly labels the great majority of relevant documents, and it could be used to support HIV systematic reviews to allow researchers to assess a greater number of documents in less time.

Today software development is a big challenge due to market policy, cost, quality and most importantly customer satisfaction. But the conventional system development is not enough to fulfill those requirements. It needs a new method of solution to overcome those challenges. Component Based software engineering (CBSE) can be a solution, in where Component Based software development (CBSD) is a process that follows the design and construction of computer based systems using reusable components. To develop a customer effective system, it requires some additional criteria, must have to follow in development. Many researchers avail to develop many different models and methodologies to overcome those challenges. But those models are not enough to handle customer oriented issues properly as their actual needs and also a complete system development model including new component development by providing pre-analyzed component development phases. Therefore new model is required to overcome those challenges. In our research we proposed a system development life cycle model which has incorporated most importantly customer participation, customer support, customer feedback analysis and new component development phases by providing fully complete customer requirement oriented framework. Our propose model for CBSD named as Customer Requirement Oriented CBSD life cycle Model (CROM).

Congenital malformations (CM) are abnormalities of structures arising during the prenatal development and hampering body functions later in life. Causes of CM can be genetic, environmental or any kind of drug exposure during the pregnancy. CM is one of the most important causes of infant mortality in the developing countries. In Pakistan 6-9% of the perinatal deaths are attributed to CM, but a comprehensive nation-wide data on the prevalence, nature and dynamics of CM are largely missing. Hence, the aim of present study is to forecast the prevalence of CM in the multiethnic and multilinguistic population of Rawalpindi/Islamabad through an inference engine. Inference engine helps in formulating new conclusions about the data that is provided to the inference engine and stored in the knowledge base of the inference engine. This pilot engine presents a comprehensive overview of neonatal and maternal parameters and highlights the potential risk factors associated with CM by formulating new conclusions. Additionally, this inference engine would be helpful to establish the dynamics of CM in our society. It is anticipated that such project conducted on a country-wide sample could be highly beneficial in guiding our national health policy, resource allocation and management of CM.
