Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are well known both for being unstable to train and for the problem of mode collapse, particularly when trained on data collections containing a diverse set of visual objects. This study introduces an adaptive hyper-parameter learning procedure for GANs as an alternative to the existing static approach. The proposed procedure is designed to mitigate the impact of instability and saturation in the original by dynamically adjusting the ratio of the training steps of both the generator and discriminator. To accomplish this, we track and analyze stable training curves of relatively narrow datasets and use them as the target fitting lines when training more diverse data collections. Experimental results show that the proposed model improves the stability and generates more realistic images.

The urban parking spaces for loading/unloading are typically over-occupied, which shifts delivery operations to traffic lanes and pavements, increases traffic, generates noise, and causes pollution. We present a data analytics based routing optimization that improves the circulation of vehicles and utilization of parking spaces. We formalize this new problem and develop a novel multivehicle route planner that avoids congestions at loading/unloading areas and minimizes the total duration. We present the developed tool with an illustration and analysis for the urban freight in the city of Barcelona, which monitors tens of thousands of deliveries every day. Our system includes an effective evaluation of candidate routes by considering the waiting times and further delays of other deliverers as a first class citizen in the optimization. A two-layer local search is proposed with a greedy randomized adaptive method for variable neighborhood search. Our approach is applied and validated over data collected across Barcelona's urban freight transport network, which contains 3,704,034 parking activities. Our solution is shown to significantly improve the use of available parking spaces and the circulation of vehicles, as evidenced by the results. The analysis also provides useful insights on how to manage delivery routes and parking spaces for sustainable urban freight transport and city logistics.

A key requirement in inductive power transfer (IPT) systems is primary high-frequency voltage generation. Until recently, two power conversion stages (AC-DC-AC) were required to generate high-frequency voltage in the IPT systems. These systems are usually costly and cumbersome. Matrix AC- AC converters, highlighted by the absence of bulky DC link storage elements, are considered as a potential alternative. The removal of one power conversion stage enhances the system performance in term of efficiency, reliability, size, weight, and cost. Now, AC-AC buck, half-bridge, and full-bridge converters are gaining popularity in IPT applications. However, highly accurate analysis of their performance in the IPT systems is a challenge. In this paper, a simple and accurate mathematical analysis for the AC-AC buck converter supplying a series-series compensated IPT system is given. Performance indicators used for analysis are input power factor and power transfer capability. The accuracy of the analysis is validated through simulation. The analytical results presented in this paper can also be employed to analyze the series-series IPT system fed from other AC-AC matrix converters. © 2018 IEEE.

A log statement is used to record important runtime behavior of software systems for diverse reasons, which is inevitable to develop most of the software systems. However, developers do not tend to deeply consider an appropriate log level in their source code. In order to address the issues, this paper proposes an automatic approach to validating log levels in Java in consideration of the syntactic as well as semantic features. We first build up the Word2Vec model and generate semantic and syntactic log feature vectors, then train the machine learning classifiers to automatically validate the log levels. For the evaluation, we collected six open source projects of the message-oriented middleware domain, and obtained the 88% precision and the 87% recall respectively.

Many machine learning (ML) applications rely on large amounts of personal data for training and inference. Among the most intimate exploited data sources is electroencephalogram (EEG) data. The emergence of consumer-grade, low-cost brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and corresponding software development kits1 is bringing the use of BCI within reach of application developers. The access that BCI applications have to neural signals rightly raises privacy concerns. Application developers can easily gain knowledge beyond the professed scope from unprotected EEG signals, including passwords, ATM PINs, and other personal data [1]. The challenge we address is how to engage in meaningful ML with EEG data while protecting the privacy of users. © 2018 IEEE.

The last decade has seen the development of a wide set of tools, such as wavefront shaping, computational or fundamental methods, that allow to understand and control light propagation in a complex medium, such as biological tissues or multimode fibers. A vibrant and diverse community is now working on this field, that has revolutionized the prospect of diffraction-limited imaging at dept. in tissues. Many software companies use the popular method of layered architecture to develop their software products resulting in code to be more generic. This generalization introduces a lot of unnecessary elements which make the system architecture to be heavy and less elegant. To overcome this challenge, a concept of feature oriented software development (FOSD) is introduced. That way, the software system will be delivered as a set of features and the feature set could be decoupled at any time, according to the latest set of requirements without harming to any existing functionality. In this research the final outcome has been a feature oriented domain specific language (DSL). The objective of this developed feature oriented DSL is to make it effective even for business analysts to introduce new features without getting help from the development team of the project. A code generator and a core controller have been developed as part of this research exhibiting the above mentioned FOSD & DSL principles. The evaluation results indicate the generated feature oriented code identically behaves as its manually written counterpart code.

Drones are widely utilized in various industries. Unfortunately, when a drone acquires sound through a microphone, which is installed itself, drone flying and wind noises appear in recorded signals. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce such drone flying and wind noises for enhancing the quality of the recorded sound signals for UAV acoustic sensor networks. In this paper, we proposes the noise reduction method using a deep convolutional denoising autoencoder for eliminating drone flying and wind noises. The deep convolutional denoising autoencoder is widely utilized to extract the target sound source in monaural audio source separation. To do this task, a training dataset is constructed by mixing drone flying and wind noises in clean speech signal. Also, we train the neural network model, which is in form of fully convolutional neural networks. From the sound signals recorded in the real outdoor environment, it is shown that the trained model can reduce the drone flying and wind noises, and only separate the target speech.

Modeling and simulation environments provide several insights about the real situations such as endoscopic surgery. Endoscopic surgery requires both hand skills, so, understanding the effect of using dominant or non dominant hand on mental workload is important to better design, develop and implement modeling and simulation environments to support real-life implementations of surgical procedures. This experimental study presents a simulation application of eye-tracking approach to understand mental workload in different hand conditions: dominant hand, non-dominant hand and both hand. The results of the study show that, performing simulated surgical tasks by both hands compared to dominant hand, increases mental workload which is evident by higher pupil size. Accordingly, to manage the mental-load problems of surgeons while performing complex tasks that require both hand usage simulation-based environments can be used. Consequently, collection of detailed information such as eye-data, can give several insights about the behaviors of the surgeons. Also, their required skills can be improved by development of simulation and training environments. © 2017 IEEE.

Many studies undertaken in the field of education have revealed that m-learning is emerging more and more as an effective learning method with the use of smartphones. Always turned on and easily transported, smartphones can be used anywhere, at any given time and in any context. Considering the potential of m-learning, we seek to understand this novelty as a support in the learning process, especially in computer science education. To reach this end, we asked a group of students their opinion in the form of a survey, in order to know the most beneficial aspects of a mobile application in education. The outcome of this survey helped us to develop a mobile application from which students could access course news, work timing, frequently asked questions and results. After using this application, a second survey highlights students' interest. We thus show that, especially for courses such as programming courses, mlearning plays a full role as it offers accessibility to valuable information which comes in a continuous flow to support the learning process and as it offers an environment where interaction with the learning tool can be adapted and adjusted to the learner's style and needs.
