With neural networks being used to control safety-critical systems, they increasingly have to be both accurate (in the sense of matching inputs to outputs) and robust. However, these two properties are often at odds with each other and a trade-off has to be navigated. To address this issue, this paper proposes a method to generate an approximation of a neural network which is certifiably more robust. Crucially, the method is fully convex and posed as a semi-definite programme. An application to robustifying model predictive control is used to demonstrate the results. The aim of this work is to introduce a method to navigate the neural network robustness/accuracy trade-off. © 2024, CC BY.

In a cement plant, the most important and critical part is the rotary kiln which is a large cylinder with a length of about 60-65 meters and a diameter of around 4.5 meters. The kiln is rotated by a powerful electrical motor. The output of kiln is clinker which is in the form of mould like balls. If the output clinker is powdered or in liquid state, then it cannot be used in further processing and will be wasted. In the current scenario, the kiln output is visually observed and the Clinker quality is hourly measured in the Laboratory. In the kiln, raw materials undergo burning around a temperature range of 1200°C to 1400°C. The clinker has to be critically burnt to achieve a desired quality. Excess heating of the raw materials leads to the production of over burnt clinker which is not useful for cement production. Such a situation results in the inefficient operation of kiln by wasting the energy spent for heating the raw materials. This is to be avoided in the cement sintering process. Burning zone temperature directly determines the characteristics of the clinker. Presently, in most of the cement plants, burning zone temperature measurement is obtained using radiation pyrometers. This measurement indicates temperature information about a particular point in the burning zone which is inadequate for the optimized operation and control of the kiln. Gait phase recognition systems are widely used in medicine to control devices aimed at restoration of patients’ motor functions and have an increasing interest in scientific society. Use of electromyography as a source of information for such systems gives considerable advantages in comparison with other data sources at the cost of complex signal processing needed. In this paper, the author outlines these advantages and suggests a method that uses discrete wavelet transform to retrieve muscle activity shape and a novel double-threshold detector to find the regions of activity. Then a robust statistical treatment is performed following a dimensionality reduction. As a result, a set of classification objects is retrieved that are suitable for further use in various clustering and classification techniques. The introduced method was tested in the Movement Physiology Laboratory of I. P. Pavlov Institute of Physiology, Russian Academy of Sciences and proved its applicability on real electromyography data. © 2018 CEUR-WS. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a procedure to estimate a homogeneous equivalent resistivity for typical transmission line tower ground arrangements that are immersed in a stratified soil model. This technique is based on artificial neural network training due to a dataset developed in a numerical routine to compute grounding resistance. The results obtained from Levemberg-Marquadt algorithm and Bayesian regularization show good accuracy compared to the applied dataset and to the measurement data from a 230 kV transmission line, a practical case analyzed. We note medians lower than 5% and acceptable values of standard deviation for practical cases, which suggests that the proposed procedure can be used for real-world conditions.

This work presents a practical evaluation of an Android app developed for grounding resistance estimation of typical transmission line (TL) towers arrangement. Such arrangements, composed by counterpoise cables, are evaluated for a two-layered soil model by a trained artificial neural network (ANN), which derives in a significative low computational cost for the solution problem. The developed algorithm is evaluated with measurements made in TL towers and compared to the solution provided by a rigorous numerical routine. The results indicate a good accuracy, with median and standard deviation lower than 7%, of the developed app for conditions where the input parameters have values within the range used to training ANN. Values outside the specified range can reach significative errors up to 5 and 17 times, respectively, for median and standard deviation.

In this paper we explore detection and tracking of astral micro-tubules, a sub-population of microtubules which only exists during and immediately before mitosis and aids in the spindle orientation by connecting it to the cell cortex. Its analysis can be useful to determine the presence of certain diseases, such as brain pathologies and cancer. The proposed algorithm focuses on overcoming the problems regarding fluorescence microscopy images and microtubule behaviour by using various image processing techniques and is then compared with three existing algorithms, tested on consistent sets of images.

Driverless Pods can be classified as Electric Vehicles (EVs) which possibly represent environmentally friendly transportations. However, the battery technology is the real restriction in accomplishing this concept due to its drawbacks, for example, high cost, scarce components, weak specific energy and physical contact with charging device requirements. Besides the pursuit of materials and energy density development, wireless power transfer (WPT) technology which is another technique to charge the batteries of the EVs with no physical contact has been introduced. In this paper, an overview of WPT technologies for EVs charging has been presented including classification, compensation topologies, transformer structures and different charging control techniques. Then, A MATLAB Simulink model is used to simulate the load identification method in order to validate this technique which seeks to achieve a constant voltage charging through load identification depending only on the primary-side controller.

This paper addresses the problem of receiving a timetable for a settled network with maximal synchronization. In this paper, a model has been developed to solve the problem which attaches importance to creating a timetable for maximizing their synchronization and enables the transfer of passengers from one route to another with least waiting times at transfer nodes. Next, this problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem, and a new algorithm based on the traditional particle swarm optimization (PSO) has been developed to solve the problem in a short time. Finally, the relationship of iterative time and the complexity of the given network is qualitatively established. © ASCE.

With stable development of container transportation in shipping industry, the transit shipment from road to railway of inland ports plays a significant role in multimodal transport. This paper presents the method of inland port location planning based on user equilibrium. In the study, the virtual connection simulating the process of transfer in inland ports is conducted to measure the fitness of inland port location through the cargo volume on virtual connection. At last, the methodology was applied into practical experiment with the results showing that the method can locate the suit inland port location. © ASCE.
