The carrier recovery is one key technique in the demodulation of high order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. A carrier recovery algorithm which switches between multi-threshold polarity decision mode and decision directed mode according to the standard deviation of the frequency of numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) is proposed. The proposed algorithm can detect a proper time for the mode switch to yield lower steady state error. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in improving the performance of blind carrier recovery.

A fault detection and isolation (FDI) system for monitoring the stator current and voltage sensors of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) for wind energy applications is presented. The FDI system is based on the model of the balanced three-phase signals, that is used to design a residual generator resting on the so-called Generalized Observer Scheme (GOS). Next, a decision system made of a combination of vector CUSUM (Cumulative Sum) algorithms is used in order to process the residual vector and achieve detection and isolation of incipient additive faults. The approach is validated via simulations of the DFIG controlled by a Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) regulator.

A space vector modulation (SVM) approach is proposed to control a four-switch rectifier with power factor correction and compensating the effect of capacitors voltage ripple. The theory and performance of this method are presented, and the method effectiveness is demonstrated by extensive simulations. The simulation results show that the capacitor voltage ripple effects in the output voltage and current shaping can be omitted and the rectifier can work agreeably under high power factor condition although capacitors voltage is not balance. The allowable amount of this unbalanced value of filter capacitors is determined.

Techniques for optimal control of hybrid systems have to consider the complex interaction of continuous and discrete dynamics and are required to limit the computational complexity arising from the corresponding search spaces. This contribution proposes an approach to computing hybrid optimal control trajectories based on an iterative model-abstraction and refinement scheme. The hybrid automaton is mapped to an abstract representation which is enriched by cost information gained from graph. Candidate solutions are computed on the abstract level and are mapped back to the level of the hybrid model, where they are validated. A refinement step guides the search for (sub-) optimal hybrid control trajectories. The proposed approach is implemented for the optimization of the start-up procedure for a chemical reactor.

Incipient fault detection and isolation (FDI) in the current sensors of a controlled induction motor is addressed by an original diagnosis system based exclusively on the three-phase signals model. In this way we avoid a reduction in the performance of the FDI system due to the uncertainty in the machine model. Assuming that the three current signals are measured, the proposed FDI system is made of a combination of Kalman filters and statistical change detection and isolation algorithms (CUSUM or Cumulative Sum). The approach is validated by a closed-loop simulation using a squirrel cage induction motor. The latter is controlled by a linear quadratic regulator combined with an extended Kalman filter.

Traditional H∞ design methods available in commercial softwares lead to controllers which present the same order as the model of the plant. Considering the high order of teleoperation systems, implementing such controllers may require the use of order-reduction methods. To avoid this extra step in the design, we propose to produce fixed-order controllers directly based on a full-order model of the system. In this paper, a zero-order (static output feedback) controller is designed for a teleoperation system. The design procedure, based on a cone complementary formulation is described and applied to a 22nd-order model of the system. The resulting controller is implemented on a one degree of freedom teleoperation system. The experimental results obtained with this simple control structure validate the use of very low order control structures in the case of teleoperation systems with the extra advantage, with respect to conventional H∞ design techniques, that the involved and time-consuming order reduction step is avoided.
