The public security has become an important issue in recent years, especially, the safe manipulation and control of vehicles in preventing the growing number of traffic accident fatalities. Accidents caused by drivers' drowsiness have a high fatality rate due to the decline of drivers' abilities in perception, recognition, and vehicle control abilities while sleepy. Preventing such an accident requires a technique for detecting, estimating, and predicting the level of alertness of a driver and a mechanism to maintain the driver's maximum performance of driving. The ICAFNN is a fuzzy neural network (FNN) capable of parameter self-adapting and structure self-constructing to acquire a small number of fuzzy rules for interpreting the embedded knowledge of a system from the given training data set. Our experiments show that the ICAFNN can achieve significant improvements in the accuracy of drowsiness estimation compared with our previous works.

We have developed an active front steering control system, which can vary the vehicle response characteristic and control the vehicle dynamics We evaluated the vehicle controllability and stability in a course-tracking maneuver when disturbances were input to the vehicle, using a real vehicle equipped with the proposed system. In addition, we developed a failsafe concept for system safety. This concept reliably detects the failure mode of the system by comparing the numerical target with the estimated numerical target. The system safety has also been confirmed for practical use. © 2006 Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, Inc. All rights reserved.

A new adaptive fuzzy controller for uncertain strict-feedback nonlinear systems is proposed. All the previous approximator-based adaptive control algorithms for the strict-feedback nonlinear systems are based on backstepping scheme and guarantee semi-global closed-loop system stability. This paper proposes a new globally stabilizing adaptive fuzzy controller for strict-feedback nonlinear system without backstepping. To this end, an online self-structuring adaptive fuzzy system is employed. The proposed adaptive fuzzy controller is considerably simpler than the previous ones based on backstepping. Only one FLS is employed to approximate a lumped uncertain nonlinearity, which highlights the simplicity of our proposed control scheme.

A parking space detection algorithm using an ultrasonic sensor has been developed. This enables automatic detection of the target parking position for a reverse parking assist system. This paper reports the background of development, the outline of the system, vehicle shape detection using an ultrasonic sensor, vehicle front shape detection, vehicle side shape detection, the actual vehicle operation status and includes a summary.

This paper presents an Image Motion Compensation (IMC) algorithm for Korea's Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS). An IMC algorithm is a priority component of the Image Navigation and Registration (INR) system to locate and register radiometric image data. To eliminate image distortions, depointing of the imager aiming direction must be adjusted. A compensation algorithm to correct depointing caused by satellite motion is designed, and the capability of the algorithm is compared with that of existing algorithm applied to the GOES's INR system. The algorithm developed in this paper improves pointing accuracy by efficiently compensating for depointing of the imager aiming direction. Not only the size and velocity distrib ution but also the spatial information of those instantaneous properties of individual droplets and bubbles are required to understand the complex behavior of dispersed multi-phase flow. In the present paper, an interferometric laser imaging technique investigating two-phase flow characeristics was demonstrated examining the simultaneous measurement of planar distributions on particle size, velocity vector and number density concentration from a frozen image, and the time series information was obtained by processing sequential imagtes of the interferogram. The measurement results with velocity vectors were precisely discriminated by size, the transient spray showed the significant difference of their flow behavior. Interferometric technique was further applied to investigate the characteristics of the size distribution of microscale gas bubble in liquid and to measure such bubbly flows on the different basis as air injection bubbly flow, electrolytic hydrogen and oxygen bubble injection and alcoholic beverages with gas bubbles.

The power-loss models for different switching states of IGCTs and diodes in MV (medium voltage) three-level NPC (neutral point clamped) inverters are presented in this paper. The models, simulation implementation and the revisional experiments on IGCT test platform are described in details. The relation between the power losses and the other elements of the inverter is analyzed and discussed. © 2005 IEEE.

in this paper a new algorithm for local estimation for approximating a function by means of local models is introduced. The instant or in-time estimation provides an attractive alternative for nonlinear identification, since it requires less structural decisions to be made by the user. It represents a hybrid between local and global modeling. This estimation procedure is combined with a predictive control algorithm with a modification cost function for efficient control. Simulation results are provided to show the results of the proposed approach. Copyright © 2005 IFAC.
