We propose a local positioning system that tracks human's movement. The system uses two 3-axis accelerometers mounted at the human's feet to detect steps. An electronic compass is used to obtain an absolute heading. Both step and heading data are combined to plot a movement trajectory on a building floor map based on the dead reckoning method. The system is tested by tracking a closed-loop walking trajectory: starting from a room, walking to another room about 20 meters away, and walk back to the starting point in the first room. The result shows about 2 meters accumulated error from the starting point.

This paper considers three different methods for low-order anti-windup (AW) compensator design and compares their application to a realistic flight control problem, where the dominant actuator nonlinearity is aileron rate saturation. The compensator design methods all rigorously enforce at least local exponential stability via absolute stability results, but differ in both the construction of the AW compensator itself and the performance requirements used in the design. In particular, the paper compares a low order AW “optimal” design method in which the compensator poles and zeros are chosen by the designer and the accompanying gains synthesised optimally; a new low order method in which the optimisation procedure optimally chooses both the zeros and the gains; and a recently introduced classical design method where loopshaping is used to completely determine the gains and dynamics of the compensator. The methods are compared using a high-order nonlinear model of the lateral dynamics of an experimental aircraft, on which similar compensators have recently been flight tested.

This paper deals with the adaptive control of a continuous time non-linear system of conical tank level process using neural networks. An adaptive system based on MRAC technique is proposed and proved to be useful in adjusting the trained parameter of the neural network for approximating the non-linearity of the dynamical system and for the process parameter variations. A neuro model is also developed for this purpose. The weight adaptive laws are developed using an adaptive neural network. The tracking error, which is the difference between the neuro model and the plant output, converge to the required accuracy through the adaptive control algorithm derived by combining the inverse neural network and adaptive neural network. A lab scale experimental setup for the conical tank level process was fabricated. Experimental studies were carried out for conventional control, fuzzy control, neuro control, and adaptive neuro control. The performances of all the above schemes were investigated. The advantages of the proposed scheme, over other methods, were highlighted.

This paper suggests novel hybrid optimization system (BF-CL) based on the bacterial foraging and clonal selection of immune system. A foraging strategy involves finding a patch of optimal condition (e.g., group of objective with conditions), deciding whether to enter it and search for optimal conditions, and when to leave the patch. There are predators and risks, energy required for optimization, and physiological constraints (sensing, memory, cognitive capabilities). Foraging scenarios can be modeled and optimal policies can be found using, for instance, dynamic programming. This approach provides us with novel hybrid model based on foraging behavior and clonal selection for a higher running time and with also a possible new connection between evolutionary forces in social foraging and distributed nongradient optimization algorithm design for global optimization over noisy surfaces for control system.

Nonlinear loads produce current harmonics. The harmonic current flowing through the nonzero impedance of the electrical network, produce harmonics in supply voltage. Harmonics in power systems cause many ill effects and economic losses. To minimise the losses, IEEE: 519- 1992 has specified limits on voltage and current harmonics. Inductive loads like induction motors produce lagging power factor of less than unity. Capacitors are often used to improve the power factor by adding them in shunt with inductive loads. When high frequency harmonic currents flow through the network, due to the combination of inductive and capacitive loads (which are linear), resonance occurs. This causes an amplification of harmonics. Consequently, the increased harmonics affect the linear loads and produce more losses. This paper explains the results of harmonics measurements by a class of neural network, ADALINE implemented on a digital signal processor. Measurements were carried out when capacitors were grouped in one place and after their relocation nearer to the linear loads. The results show that, relocation of capacitors have minimised both voltage and current harmonics significantly. This methodology is very economical since it does not require any additional equipment for filtering of harmonics.
