In this study, MMSE-K and a PTP reaching task in a VR space were conducted on groups of university students and senior citizens to find out the relationship between cognitive and motor performance indices. During controller-visible task, while seniors with relatively high MMSE-K scores (above 24) have shown no statistical difference with university students in terms of final position errors, seniors with low survey scores have shown significantly greater errors. Therefore, we observed cognitive functions are closely related with motor functions and spatial perception, so we expect that VR PTP reaching task would help early predictions on mild cognitive impairment. © 2019 IEEE.

The purpose of the following proposal is to create a new class of antennas of low weight but with a large transmitting and receiving surface made of metallized fabric. This class of antennas will be stationed in low satellite orbits, at about 2000 km from sea level and will be easily steerable by exploiting the interaction between the earth's magnetic field and an electromagnetic field generated on the antenna. The possibility of orienting very large ultra-light balloon-like MW antennas, orbiting in the Earth magnetic field, through electric currents flowing in conductive wires embedded in the antennas walls, are examined. It is shown that such currents may easily provide the needed forces without the necessity of mechanically orienting the antenna itself. The antenna is extremely light, inexpensive, easily directional. The antenna has the shape of a spheroid in which the southern hemisphere has a parabolic shape made of metallized fabric;the northern hemisphere, transparent to the electromagnetic radiation, has a radius of curvature such that the north pole coincides with the focus of the parabola. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

This paper presents a study for optimizing a hot rolling mill. The paper is devoted to the study of ways to reduce the effect of shock loads of synchronous electric drives of the roughing mill group on the relative lengthening of the metal strip in the inter-stand gap of the rolling stands of the finishing mill group. The elasticity of the metal strip in the inter-stand gap of the rolling mill has a significant impact on the movement of intercoupled multi-motor electric drives of the finishing mill group. Another crucial route of exposure that influences the motion of the electric drives within the finishing mill group involves the electromagnetic connection between the drives in the roughing and finishing mill groups. The impact of the electromagnetically connected circuits is evident through the effect of shock loads from synchronous electric drives on the angular velocity of the direct current electric drives within the finishing mill group. The characteristics of the electromagnetic communication circuit are established by the power grid arrangement and equipment specifications. To assess the quality of work of electric drives of the finishing mill group, it is proposed to use the relative lengthening of the metal strip in the inter-stand gap, which is an important indirect indicator of the quality of rolling. The mathematical model of a hot rolling mill that takes into account both the elasticity of the metal strip that connects the DC electric drives of the finishing group, and the electromagnetic coupling circuit that takes into account the impact loads of synchronous electric drives of the roughing group on the example of the mill 1700 of ArcelorMittal Temirtau JSC was proposed in this paper. The Electrical engineering undergraduate program of the Escola Politécnica of the Universidade de São Paulo has created an alternative innovative curriculum path for its freshmen students in 2024. The Competency-based Path emphasizes the development of competencies and skills for the unprecedented technological advancements that necessitate a holistic education for future electrical engineers, preparing them with practical skills for real-world challenges. The program was designed using an innovative methodology and centers around semester-long or year-long integrative projects. These projects bridge the gap between theory and practice, as students deal with real-world challenges while fostering social responsibility.

In this paper, we propose a data-driven leak localization method for water distribution networks (WDNs) which combines two complementary approaches: graph-based interpolation and dictionary classification. The former estimates the complete WDN hydraulic state (i.e., hydraulic heads) from real measurements at certain nodes and the network graph. Then, these actual measurements, together with a subset of valuable estimated states, are used to feed and train the dictionary learning scheme. Thus, the meshing of these two methods is explored, showing that its performance is superior to either approach alone, even deriving different mechanisms to increase its resilience to classical problems (e.g., dimensionality, interpolation errors, etc.). Twin-field quantum key distribution (TFQKD) systems have shown great promise for implementing practical long-distance secure quantum communication due to its measurement-device-independent nature and its ability to offer fundamentally superior rate-loss scaling than point-to-point QKD systems. A surge of research and development effort in the last two years has produced many variants of protocols and experimental demonstrations. In terms of hardware topology, TFQKD systems interfering quantum signals from two remotely phase-locked laser sources are in essence giant Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) requiring active phase stabilization. Such configurations are inherently unsuitable for a TFQKD network, where more than one user-pair share the common quantum measurement station, because it is practically extremely difficult, if not impossible, to stabilize MZIs of largely disparate path lengths, a situation that is inevitable in a multi-user-pair TFQKD network. On the other hand, Sagnac interferometer based TFQKD systems exploiting the inherent phase stability of the Sagnac ring can implement asymmetric TFQKD, and are therefore eminently suitable for implementing a TFQKD network. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a proof-of-principle multi-user-pair Sagnac TFQKD network where three user pairs sharing the same measurement station can perform pair-wise TFQKD through time multiplexing, with channel losses up to 58 dB, and channel loss asymmetry up to 15 dB. In some cases, the secure key rates still beat the rate-loss bounds for point-to-point repeaterless QKD systems, even in this network configuration. A cybersecurity problem for a multi-agent consensus problem is investigated through a dynamic game formulation. Specifically, we consider a game repeatedly played between a jamming attacker and a defender. The attacker attempts to jam the links between a number of agents to delay their consensus. On the other hand, the defender tries to maintain the connection between agents by attempting to recover some of the jammed links with the goal of achieving faster consensus. In each game, the players decide which links to attack/recover and for how long to continue doing so based on a Lyapunov-like function representing the largest difference between the states of the agents. We analyze the subgame perfect equilibrium of the game and obtain an upper bound of the consensus time that is influenced by the strategies of the players. The results are illustrated with a numerical example.

The main goal of eNeuron H2020 project (Nov 2020-Oct. 2024, ID: 957779) is to develop innovative tools for the optimal design and operation of local energy communities, integrating distributed energy resources and multiple energy carriers at different scales. This paper presents a review study of the enabling conditions for the deployment of integrated local energy communities (ILECs) in Europe, performed within the project. The enabling conditions are addressed by defining the key actors and their interests in the implementation of an energy community at local level and through a detailed mapping of the enabling and emerging energy and information and communication technologies at both household and community levels. Special focus is also on mapping of the demand-side flexibility technologies to understand the benefits of local flexibility and impacts on the larger systems. In such analysis, the key issues for implementation and adaptation of this new energy paradigm are investigated through covering technological, socio-economic, environmental, and regulatory aspects.

Learning from data of past tasks can substantially improve the accuracy of mechatronic systems. Often, for fast and safe learning a model of the system is required. The aim of this paper is to develop a model-free approach for fast and safe learning for mechatronic systems. The developed actor-critic iterative learning control (ACILC) framework uses a feedforward parameterization with basis functions. These basis functions encode implicit model knowledge and the actor-critic algorithm learns the feedforward parameters without explicitly using a model. Experimental results on a printer setup demonstrate that the developed ACILC framework is capable of achieving the same feedforward signal as preexisting model-based methods without using explicit model knowledge.
