Under real driving conditions, the fatigue monitoring system based on drivers' video is highly affected by light environment, which deteriorates the registration of facial information and thus the accuracy of surveillance. This paper, on the basis of AAM (Active Appearance Model)-based face registration method, analyzes the reasons of its failure when lighting conditions change and proposes an improved AAM algorithm. The experiments show that the improved AAM method can well register driver's face under changing lighting environment, and thus improve the accuracy in fatigue state recognition based on drivers' videos. © 2016 IEEE.

Magnetic shocks and substructures excited by torsional Alfvén wave interactions in merging expanding flux tubes

Vortex motions are frequently observed on the solar photosphere. These motions may play a key role in the transport of energy and momentum from the lower atmosphere into the upper solar atmosphere, contributing to coronal heating. The lower solar atmosphere also consists of complex networks of ux tubes that expand and merge throughout the chromosphere and upper atmosphere. We perform numerical simulations to investigate the behaviour of vortex driven waves propagating in a pair of such ux tubes in a non-force-free equilibrium with a realistically modelled solar atmosphere. The two ux tubes are independently perturbed at their footpoints by counter-rotating vortex motions. When the ux tubes merge, the vortex motions interact both linearly and nonlinearly. The linear interactions generate many small-scale transient magnetic substructures due to the magnetic stress imposed by the vortex motions. Thus, an initially monolithic tube is separated into a complex multi-threaded tube due to the photospheric vortex motions. The wave interactions also drive a superposition that increases in amplitude until it exceeds the local Mach number and produces shocks that propagate upwards with speeds of approximately 50 km s1. The shocks act as conduits transporting momentum and energy upwards, and heating the local plasma by more than an order of magnitude, with peak temperature approximately 60;000 K. Therefore, we present a new mechanism for the generation of magnetic waveguides from the lower solar atmosphere to the solar corona. This wave guide appears as the result of interacting perturbations in neighbouring ux tubes. Thus, the interactions of photospheric vortex motions is a potentially significant mechanism for energy transfer from the lower to upper solar atmosphere. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. Twin-field (TF) quantum key distribution (QKD) was conjectured to beat the private capacity of a point-to-point QKD link by using single-photon interference in a central measuring station. This remarkable conjecture has recently triggered an intense research activity to prove its security. Here, we introduce a TF-type QKD protocol which is conceptually simpler than the original proposal. It relies on local phase randomization, instead of global phase randomization, which significantly simplifies its security analysis and is arguably less demanding experimentally. We demonstrate that the secure key rate of our protocol has a square-root improvement over the point-to-point private capacity, as conjectured by the original TF-QKD scheme. The paper presents experimental results related to attitude control of a quadrotor rotating about a single axis. The Embedded Model control (EMC) methodology is used for control design. Indeed, this methodology can be very effective in applications involving relevant disturbances, modeling errors and unknown nonlinearities, since it allows a cancellation of all these sources of uncertainty. EMC control design is performed from a detailed quadrotor model, where the actuator dynamics is identified from experimental data. The designed EMC controller is compared with a standard proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller in several tests, carried out on a laboratory testbench.

Internet-of-Things (IoT) is considered as the key player to move forward the Smart City vision. Indeed, pervasive devices can enable a fain-grained monitoring of buildings and energy distribution networks. Thus, such information can be used to enhance energy optimization in our cities. However, interoperability among heterogeneous devices is a challenging task. Furthermore, all these IoT devices produce a huge amount of data that must be collected and post-processed, thus entering into the Big Data domain. Therefore, a distributed IoT platform for energy management has to be designed for i) enabling the interoperability among heterogeneous IoT devices and ii) handling such huge amount of data. In this paper, we describe the requirements to be addressed in order to develop an IoT platform for Smart City. We also present two distributed IoT platforms we developed to improve the energy management in Smart City. Finally, based on our experience in a real-world case study, we provide an estimation of the amount of energy-related information our presented platforms have to manage.

Since Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have become the leading learning paradigm in visual recognition, Naive Bayes Nearest Neighbor (NBNN)-based classifiers have lost momentum in the community. This is because (1) such algorithms cannot use CNN activations as input features;(2) they cannot be used as final layer of CNN architectures for end-to-end training, and (3) they are generally not scalable and hence cannot handle big data. This paper proposes a framework that addresses all these issues, thus bringing back NBNNs on the map. We solve the first by extracting CNN activations from local patches at multiple scale levels, similarly to [13]. We address simultaneously the second and third by proposing a scalable version of Naive Bayes Non-linear Learning (NBNL, [7]). Results obtained using pre-trained CNNs on standard scene and domain adaptation databases show the strength of our approach, opening a new season for NBNNs.

In today's world, large volumes of medical data are being continuously generated, but their value is severely undermined by our inability to translate them into knowledge and, ultimately, actions. Data mining techniques allow the extraction of previously unknown interesting patterns from large datasets, but their complexity limits their practical diffusion. Data-driven analysis is a multi-step process, in which health care professionals define analysis goals and assess extracted knowledge, while computer scientists tackle the non trivial task of driving the miner system analysis activity. This paper addresses the mining activity from a different perspective. We believe that mining systems should be able to devise which knowledge could be most interesting to users and extract actionable knowledge from large medical datasets, with minimal user intervention. More specifically, mining systems should be capable of (i) devising viable end-goals for a specific dataset (i.e., that yield actionable knowledge to the user and are feasible given the dataset characteristics and size), based on the expertise acquired during the analysis of previous datasets, and (ii) extracting a manageable set of knowledge. Automated data analysis should fuel the next generation of medical mining systems, thus enabling users to automatically mine massive data repositories.

In this paper we present an approach for efficiently retrieving the most similar image, based on point-to-point correspondences, within a sequence that has been acquired through continuous camera movement. Our approach is entailed to the use of standardized binary feature descriptors and exploits the temporal form of the input data to dynamically adapt the search structure. While being straightforward to implement, our method exhibits very fast response times and its Precision/Recall rates compete with state of the art approaches. Our claims are supported by multiple large scale experiments on publicly available datasets.

The ETSI model defines a generic architecture to deploy and configure virtual network functions. While many efforts from both academia and industry focus on the problem of deploying those virtual network functions, little attention has been given to the interface needed to configure such applications. This paper explores the problem of dynamically configuring virtual network functions and proposes an implementation for the ETSI MANO OR-VNFM interface that supports generic network functions by exploiting a message bus and YANG models.

On-Stack Replacement (OSR) is a technique for dynamically transferring execution between different versions of a function at run time. OSR is typically used in virtual machines to interrupt a long-running function and recompile it at a higher optimization level, or to replace it with a different one when a speculative assumption made during its compilation no longer holds. In this paper we present a framework for OSR that introduces novel ideas and combines features of existing techniques that no previous solution provided simultaneously. New features include OSR with compensation code to adjust the program state during a transition and the ability to fire an OSR from arbitrary locations in the code. Our approach is platform-independent as the OSR machinery is entirely encoded at a compiler's intermediate representation level. We implement and evaluate our technique in the LLVM compiler infrastructure, which is gaining popularity as Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler in virtual machines for dynamic languages such as Javascript, MATLAB, Python, and Ruby. As a case study of our approach, we show how to improve the state of the art in the optimization of the feval instruction, a performance-critical construct of the MATLAB language.
