Questions with open answers are rarely used as e-learning assessment tools because of the resulting high workload for the teacher/tutor that should grade them. This can be mitigated by having students grade each other's answers, but the uncertainty on the quality of the resulting grades could be high. In our OpenAnswer system we have modeled peer-assessment as a Bayesian network connecting a set of sub-networks (each representing a participating student) to the corresponding answers of her graded peers. The model has shown good ability to predict (without further info from the teacher) the exact teacher mark and a very good ability to predict it within 1 mark from the right one (ground truth). From the available datasets we noticed that different teachers sometimes disagree in their assessment of the same answer. For this reason in this paper we explore how the model can be tailored to the specific teacher to improve its prediction ability. To this aim, we parametrically define the CPTs (Conditional Probability Tables) describing the probabilistic dependence of a Bayesian variable from others in the modeled network, and we optimize the parameters generating the CPTs to obtain the smallest average difference between the predicted grades and the teacher's marks (ground truth). The optimization is carried out separately with respect to each teacher available in our datasets, or respect to the whole datasets. The paper discusses the results and shows that the prediction performance of our model, when optimized separately for each teacher, improves against the case in which our model is globally optimized respect to the whole dataset, which in turn improves against the predictions of the raw peer-assessment. The improved prediction would allow us to use OpenAnswer, without teacher intervention, as a class monitoring and diagnostic tool.

In this paper, we present a new network protocol and methodology to enhance the configuration phase of the SpiNNaker spiking neural network hardware simulator. We have developed a system able to accept and process on-board a set of configuration primitives (data specification) encapsulated into ad-hoc packets, avoiding the management of chip memory from the host computer. We performed a study of the data specification generator implemented in the host software library. Afterwards, we extended the currently on-board data specification executor to cope with the newly-formed packets. The use of UDP protocol presents challenges due to its intrinsic unreliability. Furthermore, the presence of a single Ethernet link per board, and the requirement for a dedicated processor to handle all Ethernet communications limit the available communication bandwidth. A set of simulations was performed in order to tune the protocol parameters and to study the trade-offs between transmission speed and reliability. We were able to reach a throughput of a packet every 250 μs, which corresponds to a bandwidth of ~10 Mb/s. This system is able to open new perspectives for the SpiNNaker architecture. Thus, including the reduction of the time required to configure a simulation, the ability to configure more instances of a simulation. This system could even to enable the simulation of neurogenesis.

In this paper, the fundamental idea of Incremental Granular Models (IGM) introduced by Pedrycz and Kwak (2007) is followed and their comprehensive design framework is developed. In contrast to typical rule-based systems encountered in fuzzy modeling, the underlying principle of IGM is to consider a two-phase development. First, we build a Linear Regression (LR) model which could be treated as a global model. Next, all modeling errors are compensated by a collection of fuzzy rules that capture more localized nonlinearities of the system as a local model. Here we expand local granular models into Radial Basis Function Networks (RBFN) or Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Networks (ANFN) with the use of information granules through Context-based Fuzzy C-Means (CFCM) clustering in the design of incremental model. Numerical studies concern two datasets coming from the machine learning repository. The experimental results revealed that both Incremental RBFN (IRBFN) and Incremental ANFN (IANFN) showed good performance in comparison to the previous works.

Despite the enormous theoretical and experimental progress made so far in quantum key distribution (QKD), the security of most existing QKD implementations is not rigorously established yet. A critical obstacle is that almost all existing security proofs make ideal assumptions on the QKD devices. Problematically, such assumptions are hard to satisfy in the experiments, and therefore it is not obvious how to apply such security proofs to practical QKD systems. Fortunately, any imperfections and security-loopholes in the measurement devices can be perfectly closed by measurement-device-independent QKD (MDI-QKD), and thus we only need to consider how to secure the source devices. Among imperfections in the source devices, correlations between the sending pulses are one of the principal problems. In this paper, we consider a setting-choice-independent correlation (SCIC) framework in which the sending pulses can present arbitrary correlations but they are independent of the previous setting choices such as the bit, the basis and the intensity settings. Within the framework of SCIC, we consider the dominant uctuations of the sending states, such as the relative phases and the intensities, and provide a self-contained information theoretic security proof for the loss-tolerant QKD protocol in the finite-key regime. We demonstrate the feasibility of secure quantum communication within a reasonable number of pulses sent, and thus we are convinced that our work constitutes a crucial step toward guaranteeing implementation security of QKD. The swarming behavior of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important factor to the formation of bacteria biofilm which may cause infections in susceptible individuals. A key issue in studying the mechanism of P. aeruginosa swarming is to analyze the cell dynamics in time-lapse images. We propose a complete toolkit for producing quantitative results of cell dynamics analysis in time-lapse images of P. aeruginosa. The toolkit includes automatic cell segmentation and tracking, and optional tools for human interaction. Our proposed segmentation and tracking algorithms achieve considerable improvement over one of the best known open-source software for cell segmentation and tracking. A set of graphical interfaces is developed for human annotation, segmentation and tracking results inspection and correction, which are generic and can be combined with most other cell segmentation and tracking algorithms. Our toolkit is convenient for scientific researchers to use, even without knowledge of image processing, to perform cell dynamics analysis efficiently.

Hazy images hinder image understanding in many applications such as autonomous vehicle. In this paper, we propose an efficient method to improve image quality of hazy images. Our method estimates the transmission function based on a linear model that allows efficient computation and employs quadtree to search for a region that best represents the scatter of airlight. Experiments were conducted using publicly available images. It is demonstrated that our proposed method achieved comparable results to the state-of-the-art ones. In the estimation of sunlight radiance, the quadtree that integrates local brightness and gradient as well as spatial constraint provide a robust means to identify region of sky. Most significantly, our proposed method greatly improved the efficiency. When dealing with moderate and large size image, the improvement could be more than thirty-fold.

The paper presents an optimisation based method to parametrize input shapers with time delays of piece-wise-equal distribution. The design respects the two key requirements on the shaper performance that are the prompt response time and the robustness represented by residual vibration functions, which are however conflicting criteria as a rule. Thus, the optimisation task is solved as a constrained multi-objective problem where the constraints respect the additional requirements on the shaper performance such as a non-decreasing step response or zero residual function at some frequency points. The result is a Pareto front that shows a trade-off between the two main requirements. Next to the presentation of the results in an example, a user friendly shaper-design tool is presented. © 2016

Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFET power module has become commercially available in the past few years, and it is attractive in solid state transformers (SSTs) applications to replace Silicon (Si)-based IGBTs. This paper is focused on the efficiency comparison between a SiC MOSFET-based three-port active bridge converter (TAB) and a Si IGBT-based approach. The efficiency of the overall system, being one of its ports connected to the energy storage element (Lithium-Ion battery), is tested and analyzed. By swapping the switching frequency of the device, a significant efficiency improvement can be observed by SiC power devices. Experimental results indicated that an efficiency increment of around 2% can be brought by SiC MOSFET. Moreover, the battery losses can be reduced by a maximum of 8% with the increased switching frequency. © 2016 IEEE.

The main objective of the work is to improve the clustering efficiency and performance when we deal with very big datasets. This paper aims to improve the quality of XML data clustering by exploiting more features extracted from source schemas. In particular, it proposes clustering approach that gathers both content and structure of XML documents to determine similarity between them. The content and structure information are concluded using two different similarity methods that are then grouped via weight factor to compute the overall document similarity. The structural similarity of XML data are derived from edge summaries while content features similarity are derived from aggregate of set of similarity measures; Jaccard, Cosine measure and Jensen-Shannon divergence in one algorithm. However, we also experimented using Jaccard distance as content measure with edge summaries to prove that using an aggregation of content similarity measures can further improve the results. The experiments prove that clustering of XML documents based on structure only information produce worse solution in homogenous environment, while in heterogeneous environment clustering of XML document produce better result when the structure and the content are combined. Results have shown that performance and quality of the proposed approach is better in comparison of both XEdge and XCLSC approaches.

We introduce a novel distributed control architecture for disturbances attenuation in heterogeneous platoons of linear and time-invariant autonomous agents that inherits the performance achievable by the leader-follower control policies. We provide a Youla-like parameterization for the class of all distributed controllers such that the sparsity constraints are imposed on the controllers' left coprime factors, outlining a new concept of structural constraints in distributed control. The proposed scheme lends itself to optimal controller design via norm based costs, it guarantees string stability and completely eliminates the accordion effect from the behavior of the platoon. The distributed controller is proven to attain global optimality for heterogeneous platoons and ℋ 2 costs and can easily reconfigure such as to remain optimal during formation merging/exiting maneuvers. The scheme is amenable to a GPS time base synchronization mechanism, allowing for the exact compensation of the time delays induced by the wireless communications.
