The problem of correctness and timing of reactions of an agent in interaction with a physical environment is addressed. To this end, a method based on composition of separate models of the software and the environment is used. To use available methods within the field of software verification, discrete representations of the continuous components are described systematically. A nontrivial case study within the domain of road traffic is used to illustrate the derivation of discrete models without losing information relevant to the verification task. The different modeling stages involved are shown first within an untimed formalism, and then in a formalism incorporating quantitative time. © 1993 IEEE.

The extended kalman filter is applied to localize a target in a plane from range and bearing measurements and from bearing only measurements received at an observer. The model is a constant bearing between and the target;thus the state here model is x ≈ w, where x is the state vector and w is white noise. It is shown that the target is tracked even when bearing only measurements are availbale. Example are provided tp describe the performance of the filter with this state model. © 1993 IEEE.

The Joint Detection/Estimation Filter (JDEF) [1,2] can be utilized to improve the performance of a single Extended Kalmart Filter (EKF) when the problem of estimation involves a large initial variance. In this case the JDEF is used to estimate the presence and location of a point target when the received signal is corrupted by multipath. In the formulation of the problem it was assumed that both the target and sensor were stationary and that there was an equal probability of the point target being present or absent along a center look direction. This implementation of the JDEF proved to be quite successful and can be easily expanded to estimate a larger number of unknown parameters. © 1993 IEEE.

This paper addresses the problem of multi sensor detection and high resolution signal parameter estimation using joint maximum a posteriori detection and high order nonlinear filtering techniques. The model-based fusion approach offers the potential for increased target resolution in range/azimuth space. The technique employs joint detection/estimation filters (JDEF) for target detection and parameter localization. The JDEF approach segments the aggregate nonlinear model over the entire target resolution space into subcells. This partitioning leads to extremely accurtate detection and parameter estimation. The proposed JDEF approach has a built-in capability for automatic data alignment from multiple sensors, and can be used for centralized, noncentralized, and distributed data fusion. © 1993 IEEE.

We consider nonlinear control systems for which an estimate x/spl circ/ of the system state x is available for feedback. We assume x/spl circ/=x+d/sub m/, where d/sub m/(t) is an unknown locally bounded state measurement disturbance. We present conditions under which we can design a smooth feedback law u=/spl mu/(x/spl circ/) which renders the mapping from d/sub m/ to x globally input/output stable. For any initial condition, such a feedback law will guarantee that no finite escape times occur, that bounded disturbances d/sub m/ produce bounded signals, and that x/spl rarr/0 when d/sub m//spl rarr/0. We show that the class of systems for which such feedback laws exist include systems in strict feedback form. One important application is in the output feedback stabilization problem, where the disturbance d/sub m/ comes from a separately designed observer.< >

A hardware VLSI implementation of the Viterbi algorithm is presented. The Viterbi algorithm is used to solve a word recognition problem using a hidden Markov model. In order to accelerate the speed of computation for real-time word recognition, the inherent parallelism in the recursion step of the algorithm is exploited. Details of the hardware implementation and experimental results are discussed.< >

The paper deals with the instantaneous power theory in three‐phase circuits by using the instantaneous time phasors of voltage and current. Particularly it is shown that the instantaneous components of the current time‐phasor in a rotating reference frame p‐q, oriented in such a way that the instantaneous voltage time‐phasor points to the p‐axis direction, represent the active and reactive currents. These components give rise to instantaneous real and imaginary powers, respectively. The spectral analysis of the above‐mentioned time‐phasors gives the harmonic symmetrical components of positive and negative sequence of voltage and current three‐phase systems. The line‐by‐line product of the voltage sequence spectrum by the complex conjugate of the current sequence spectrum gives the DC components of the instantaneous real and imaginary powers. The paper shows also that the instantaneous active and reactive currents are different from those defined on grounds of the Fryze's theory, which can be determined from the voltage and current sequence spectra. In this contribution a new parametrs estimation algorithm for setmembership description of uncertainty is presented. Identificati on consists of computing the feasible parameter region (FPR) within which the parameter vector to be identified must lie to give the observed output, given the constraints on the noise. However, tho membership estimators presented in the literature so far are mainly restricted to the outer-bounding algorithms. The approach described here has been designed for handling inner bound as an approximation to the FPR. Such an approximation can be obtained by means of a simple linear parametric programming. © 1992 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. All rights reserved.

This paper presents optimum pairing and ordering (P/O) conditions for simultaneous reduction in total capacitance, sensitivity and output noise of cascade SC filters. First, investigating relations among conditions proposed for minimizing these three parameters independently, termed, CTmin, Smin and Nmin conditions, we make it clear that there is no P/O assignment with which the three parameters can be simultaneously minimized. Then we verify that Nmin condition is valid in reducing two other parameters. Trade-off optimum conditions are proposed by combining Nmin with Smin and CTmin. These conditions can limit the number of P/O assignments, in which an optimum P/O assignment for simultaneous reduction of three parameters can be searched out easily. Depending upon applications, the trade-off optimum condition can be slightly modified by adjusting the proportion of CTmin Smin and Nmin. Efficiency of the proposed trade-off optimum conditions is confirmed through computer simulation using several kinds of filters. © 1992 IEEE.

The authors present a general approach to determining the number of sinusoids present in measurements corrupted by additive white Gaussian and nonGaussian noise. The approach involves the simultaneous application of maximum a posteriori detection and nonlinear estimation using either the extended Kalman filter when the noise is Gaussian, or the extended high order filter when the noise is nonGaussian. The problem is formulated as a multiple hypothesis testing problem with assumed known a priori probabilities for each hypothesis. The advantage of the approach lies in the potential to accommodate time-varying as well as time-invariant parameters in the measurement model. Experimental evaluation of the approach demonstrates excellent performance in selecting the correct model order and estimating the system parameters even for signal-to-noise ratios as low as -5 dB. © 1992 IEEE.
