The increase in renewable power generation causes an overall decrease in conventional power generation from large-scale and highly predictable fossil power plants. Aside from market-based provision of active power schedules, these power plants are crucial for the provision of short-term automatic ancillary services such as frequency and voltage control. Substituting these plants for renewable generation units requires the latter to be capable of providing these ancillary services in order to guarantee a reliable and stable power supply. In this paper we present an integrated approach for identifying distributed coalitions of agents representing units capable of providing frequency response reserve. We present a method for calculating the individual droop control parameters of each participating device taking into account opportunity costs, device specific reliabilities (e.g. for photovoltaic or wind installations) as well as the small-signal stability of such a coalition for frequency response reserve.

This paper presents an extension of the trapezoidal integration rule, that in the present work is applied to devise a pseudo-recursive numerical algorithm for the numerical evaluation of fractional-order integrals. The main benefit of pseudo recursive implementation arises in terms of higher accuracy when the algorithm is run in the “short memory” version. The rule is suitably generalized in order to build a numerical solver for a class of fractional differential equations. The algorithm is also specialized to derive an efficient numerical algorithm for the on-line implementation of linear fractional order controllers. The accuracy of the method is theoretically analyzed and its effectiveness is illustrated by simulation examples.

Nonlinear fractional PI control of a class of fractional-order systems

This paper deals with the design of nonlinear PI control techniques for regulating a class of fractional-order dynamics governed by a commensurate-order model, possibly nonlinear, perturbed by an external disturbance. The suggested control algorithm is the combination between a fractional-order PI controller and a nonlinear robust version of it, namely a second-order sliding mode control algorithm called “super-twisting” controller in the literature. A key feature of the approach is the use of ad-hoc sliding manifolds whose construction involves fractional order derivatives. A constructive Lyapunov based synthesis is illustrated, which leads to simple tuning rules for the controller parameters guaranteeing the asymptotic rejection of the external disturbance under appropriate smoothness restrictions. Computer simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

In this paper we discuss the second version of Flecs, a generic, open-source coupling shell that can be used to join two or more arbitrary solvers. In general multidisciplinary computations are very computing-intensive. A remedy against long computing times is large-scale parallelism. The challenge of the present parallelization work is to obtain acceptable computing times and to get rid of severe memory requirements that exist on sequential machines, for the generic flow problems at hand. The aim is to provide a flexible platform for developing new data transfer algorithms and coupling schemes.

This paper presents an extension of the well-known trapezoidal (bilinear) integration rule, that in the present work is applied to the numerical evaluation of fractional-order integrals. Particularly, this approximation is exploited to derive viable numerical algorithms addressing two distinct problems: i) simulation of Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) Commensurate Fractional Order Systems (CFOS); ii) non-recursive parameter estimation in LTI-CFOS. More precisely, the problem of non-recursive parameter estimation is addressed in two different scenarios. The first one is when the commensurate order of the CFOS is known in advance, while the second, more general, one is that in which the commensurate order is unknown and is to be estimated. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is illustrated by numerical examples.

Bacteriorhodopsin (bR) is a light-sensitive protein which has a proton-pump function, and is found in the cell membrane of Halobacterium salinarum inhabiting the salt lake. Optical excitation of bR at an electrode-electrolyte interface generates differential photocurrents while an incident light is turned on and off. This unique functional response is similar to that seen in retinal neurons. This paper describes the fabrication and evaluation of the dip-coated bR thin films, photocurrent characteristics, and biomimetic artificial retinas with the bR thin films.

Second-order sliding mode approaches to disturbance estimation and fault detection in fractional-order systems

Abstract This paper outlines some results concerning the application of second-order sliding-mode techniques to address estimation and fault detection problems involving fractional order (FO) dynamics. Perturbed and switched FO systems are dealt with throughout the paper. Simple tuning formulas for the suggested schemes are constructively developed along the paper by means of appropriate Lyapunov analysis. Simulation and experimental results confirm the expected performance.

In this article we present a mathematical model of a spincopter -an inherently stable and easy to control unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Although the devised model represents only the first approximation of spincopter's physics, it captures basic phenomena that are sufficient for derivation and testing of a simple control algorithm. Results obtained by simulations in Simulink presented herein, demonstrate efficient performance of the proposed simple controller structure. Further tests, including investigation of complex aerodynamics effects and hardware-specified limitations, have been done using X-Plan software package. Finally, the proposed controller has been tested experimentally. Both, Xplane and experimental results confirmed the outcome from Simulink.
