We propose an image segmentation method for automatic paper-money inspection system. The UV (ultra violet) patterns embedded in the paper money should be segmented to determine whether the money is genuine or not. We acquired the image by directional lighting system using UV LEDs. In order to segment the pattern from the background, we apply the Gaussian mixture model to consider the multi-modal characteristics of the histogram. Experimental results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed method.

To optimize the energy consumption during transmission in a secure remote fingerprint authentication system, most approaches have considered a fixed-rate compression of WSQ(Wavelet Scalar Quantization). To balance the energy consumption and the recognition accuracy, however, we need to consider the total energy consumption during compression/encryption/transmission and the quality of the given image. In this paper, we first develop an energy-accuracy prediction model. Then, from the given image, we can evaluate the quality of it. Finally, from the user's minimum requirement of the recognition accuracy, the energy-optimized compression rate under the requirement can be derived adaptively. Based on the experimental result, we show that total energy consumption of the fixed approach can be reduced by 29%.

Geometric distortion of an image is one of the most important parameters affecting the accuracy of optical inspection systems. We propose a new image distortion correction method to increase the accuracy of printed circuit board (PCB) inspection systems. Our model-free method is applied to correct the randomly distorted images that cannot be represented by a mathematical model. To reduce the correction time of the inspection system, we propose a control area-merging algorithm that minimizes the number of control areas using the quad-tree approach. We apply the proposed method to a PCB inspection system, and verify its usefulness through experiments using actual inspection images. © 2009 SICE.

Due to increased terrors and crimes, the use of the surveillance system like CCTV is increasing. The surveillance system has been operated for public interest such as prevention of crimes and fly-tipping by the police and local government. However private information such as faces or behavior patterns can be recorded in CCTV, it may cause the invasion of privacy. This paper analyses conventional methods of privacy protection in surveillance camera systems. We propose a video surveillance system that satisfies both privacy protection and surveillance. The proposed system uses the RFID to recognize the human and uses the scrambling to prevent invasion of privacy. Note that the proposed system can reduce invasion of privacy by intensity of scrambling according to access levels. It is able to exactly offer internal or external personnel information of objects to the surveillance. Based on the experimental results, we confirm that the proposed system can be privacy protection and the surveillance. © 2009 IEEE.

In contemporary society, access to information is easy because of advanced communication media, so security system which prevent unauthorized access is considered important. Fingerprint verification systems are very convenient and secure. Minutiae-based fingerprint verification is widely used in fingerprint verification. However, existing systems can cause errors according to size and quality of fingerprint images that are read only with a use of minutiae. Due to such errors, the users who have no authority of access are allowed to use the information, which is a problem. This paper proposes hybrid fingerprint verification methods of two kinds to improve performance of minutiae-based fingerprint verification. One is method using fingerprint binary image, and another is method using ridge-information. The result which experiments two kind methods, we confirm to improved performance of fingerprint verification than when only minutiae-based verification was used. © 2009 IEEE.

This paper presents a current-mode control non-inverting buck-boost converter. The proposed circuit is controlled by the current mode and operated in three operation modes which are buck, buck-boost, and boost mode. The operation mode is automatically determined by the ratio between the input and output voltages. The proposed circuit is simulated by HSPICE with 0.5 ¿m standard CMOS parameters. Its input voltage range is 2.5-5 V, and the output voltage range is 1.5-5 V. The maximum efficiency is 92% when it operates in buck mode.

Recently, according to the number of Internet in widely use and the development of the related application, the distribution and use of multimedia contents, such as digital images, are very easy. Since these can modify as easy as use, multimedia contents need newly compressed JPEG 2000 and digital watermarking technique because of its enormous amount of information. To protect the digital image in real-time, this paper proposes two methods that Dual Watermarking Method (DWM) based JPEG 2000 and performing JPEG 2000 and watermarking synchronously. DWM consists of the robust and fragile watermarking. Also, in DWM, watermarks are carefully embedded avoiding the areas of Region Of Interest (ROI) and the edge of the digital image to protect the integrity of it. In performing JPEG 2000 and watermarking, it takes considerably less time to do JPEG 2000 and watermarking than when they are done separately. Based on the experimental results, it takes 0.72 second for JPEG 2000 and watermarking, and 1.11 second when they are done separately. © 2009 ACM.

The Picture Archiving and Communication System(PACS)was introduced for computerization of the medical system and telediagnosis between the hospital. It is becoming possible to create, store, and transmit medical images via PACS. There has been a growing interest in protecting medical images with an enormous amount of information. To improve transmission speed among the hospitals, the medical image should be compression JPEG 2000 by high compression ratio. This paper proposes an algorithM that utilizes both JPEG 2000 and robust watermarking for protection and compression of the medical image. With the proposed algorithm, it takes considerably less time to do JPEG 2000 and watermarking than when they are done separately. Based on the experiment results, it takes 0.72 second for the proposed algorithm and 1.11 second when they are done separately. We confirmed that the proposed algorithM was faster than when they are done separately.

this paper is concerned with a method for designing Quantum-based Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy System with (QANFS) a TSK fuzzy type based on the fuzzy granulation. Here we develop a systematic approach to generating automatic fuzzy rules based on fuzzy subtractive quantum clustering that is an extension of ideas inherent to scale-space clustering and support-vector clustering. Moreover, we develop Linear Regression (LR)-QANFS as an incremental model to deal with localized nonlinearities of the system so that all modeling discrepancies can be compensated. After adopting the construction of the LR as the first global model, we refined it through a series of local fuzzy if-then rules in order to capture the remaining localized characteristics. The experimental results revealed that the proposed LR-QANFS showed a better performance in comparison with radial basis function networks and the linguistic model for a coagulant dosing process in a water purification plant.
