Real-time pedestrian detection based on resolution aware feature transformation

We describe a real-time pedestrian detection system intended for use in automotive applications. Our system demonstrates competitive detection performance when compared to the state-of-the-art detectors in Far scale scenes and is able to run at a speed of 15 fps on an Intel Core i5 computer when applied to 640x480 images. To gain this achievement, we make efforts on both efficiency and effectiveness. First, we analyze geometric constraints at different resolutions in order to efficiently search the feature pyramids. Second, we use resolution aware transformation of feature subspace to increase the detection accuracy of low resolution pedestrians. The transformation is used to map features of different resolution pedestrians to a common subspace where the detector model will be trained. For model learning, we present a modification of SVM training process to learn the resolution aware transformations and SVM model based detector iteratively. We have evaluated our system on our ground truth datasets. Our system shows 0.42 miss rate with 1 false positive per image (FPPI) while its effective detection distance maintains 40m in our ground truth test.

Use of renewable energy sources for electricity generation is gaining prominence due to the increasing importance of sustainable development. Many of the electricity producers using renewable energy resources have very small generating capacities and it is a challenge to integrate them with the grid. Smart grids can play an important role in facilitating integration of these small distributed electricity producers to the power grid. The concept of virtual power plants (VPPs) is one of the important approaches used in smart grid for integrating distributed energy resources. The VPP aggregates electricity generated from many distributed energy sources such as wind turbines, small hydro, etc. The energy sources within a VPP are run by their individual owners and the VPP planner helps to aggregate and deliver the power to the grid. In this paper, we model the virtual power plant (VPP) formation problem with strategic producers (suppliers) using renewable energy sources as a combinatorial auction problem. We state and prove the necessary and sufficient condition for incentive compatible and individually rational auction mechanism in the presence of strategic suppliers. We also show that the dominant strategy for a supplier in our mechanism is to bid truthfully and improve her reputation. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper describes the submission of the University of Washington's Center for data science to the PAN 2014 author profiling task. We examine the predictive quality in terms of age and gender of several sets of features extracted from various genres of online social media. Through comparison, we establish a feature set which maximizes accuracy of gender and age prediction across all genres examined. We report accuracies obtained by two approaches to the multi-label classification problem of predicting both age and gender;a model wherein the multi-label problem is reduced to a single-label problem using powerset transformation, and a chained classifier approach wherein the output of a dedicated classifier for gender is used as input for a classifier for age.

Optical imaging surveys measure both the galaxy density and the gravitational lensing-induced shear fields across the sky. Recently, the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Collaboration used a joint fit to two-point correlations between these observables to place tight constraints on cosmology (T. M. C. Abbott et al. (Dark Energy Survey Collaboration), Phys. Rev. D 98, 043526 (2018)). In this work, we develop the methodology to extend the DES Year 1 joint probes analysis to include cross-correlations of the optical survey observables with gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background as measured by the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and Planck. Using simulated analyses, we show how the resulting set of five two-point functions increases the robustness of the cosmological constraints to systematic errors in galaxy lensing shear calibration. Additionally, we show that contamination of the SPT+Planck cosmic microwave background lensing map by the thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect is a potentially large source of systematic error for two-point function analyses but show that it can be reduced to acceptable levels in our analysis by masking clusters of galaxies and imposing angular scale cuts on the two-point functions. The methodology developed here will be applied to the analysis of data from the DES, the SPT, and Planck in a companion work.

In computer-mediated communication (CMC), the lack of visual cues in text communication can make communication difficult. However, video chat with rich cues may raise privacy concerns and social biases. In this paper, we present an instant messaging tool, namely KinChat, that combines text messaging with visualizations of facial expression and head movement. We conduct an evaluation study, confirming the utility of this design.

We provide a new approach to synthesis of Formal Concept Analysis and Rough Set Theory. In this approach, the formal concept is considered to be a collection of objects accompanied with two collections of attributes|those which are shared by all the objects and those which are possessed by at least one of the objects. We define concept-forming operators for these concepts and describe their properties. Furthermore, we deal with reduction of the data by rough approximation by given equivalence. The results are elaborated in a fuzzy setting.

We report the first detection of gravitational lensing due to galaxy clusters using only the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The lensing signal is obtained using a new estimator that extracts the lensing dipole signature from stacked images formed by rotating the cluster-centered Stokes Q/U map cutouts along the direction of the locally measured background CMB polarization gradient. Using data from the SPTpol 500 deg2 survey at the locations of roughly 18,000 clusters with richness λ ≥ 10 from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year-3 full galaxy cluster catalog, we detect lensing at 4.8σ. The mean stacked mass of the selected sample is found to be (1.43 ± 0.40) × 1014 M☉which is in good agreement with optical weak lensing based estimates using DES data and CMB-lensing based estimates using SPTpol temperature data. This measurement is a key first step for cluster cosmology with future low-noise CMB surveys, like CMB-S4, for which CMB polarization will be the primary channel for cluster lensing measurements. Many health care providers have adopted Electronic Health Records to represent patient's health conditions. A patient visits many health care facilities like hospitals, private practices or primary health care centres for treatment of different ailments. There is a need to integrate the patient's health data from various sources, to provide a comprehensive view of the patient's health status. This data integration has to be seamless and unaffected by technology issues related to the data representation or exchange. The authors modeled data requirements and designed a Public Health Ontology to represent domain knowledge. The relational health data was mapped into instances of the Public Health Ontology to form a knowledge base of health records. The quality of the ontology and the knowledge base was analyzed using a metric based approach. The semantic representation enables interoperability and results prove that the knowledge base is rich in detail and diversity. The Public Health Ontology uses standardized medical terminology and unique patient identifiers to enable data integration which can enable a complete new level of reasoning over health data. However the public health knowledge base is fairly isolated and it needs to be connected to well-known ontology for meaningful use of the public health knowledge base.

Boolean games offer a compact alternative to normal-form games, by encoding the goal of each agent as a propositional formula. In this paper, we show how this framework can be naturally extended to model situations in which agents are uncertain about other agents’ goals. We first use uncertainty measures from possibility theory to semantically define (solution concepts to) Boolean games with incomplete information. Then we present a syntactic characterization of these semantics, which can readily be implemented, and we characterize the computational complexity. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

In this work we propose to analyze the formal properties of the center/surround versions of Retinex. Our main goal is to clarify what the 'best' surround should be. Two conditions are sound or necessary from an image theoretical viewpoint: scale invariance and integrability. Then, we present a new kernel, which finds an acceptable compromise between these two conditions. This new kernel is compared with different kernels obtained from some center-surround methods. © 2014 IEEE.
