This paper proposes a vision-based navigation system for Tamsui historical buildings. Most travelers in Tamsui take a picture of the historical buildings by using their mobile phone's camera. Our system is designed to automatically extract the color and edge features out of images, and then search similar images from an image database by comparing with these features. For the searched buildings, their contextual navigation and 3D model will be displayed or projected in a screen. This makes the navigation process easier and more interesting. Experimental results showed that the proposed scheme retrieves the target building images effectively and accurately.

Fundamental skills acquired by undergraduate students during their academic, play a crucial role in their career. One such skill is computational thinking (CT), which will help to solve problems algorithmically using computers. Computational thinking will improve their problem solving skills in a non-conventional manner as this leads the student to think in multiple paths to reach the solution. However, it is a challenge in Computing Education to develop student's ability to solve problems in an algorithmic way. The aim of this paper is to introduce a potential and pragmatic approach to develop computational thinking skills in novices.

It is often discussed that the fourth methodology for science research is "informatics". The first methodology is a theoretic approach, the second one is observation and/or experiment, and the third one is computer simulation. Informatics is a new methodology for data intensive science, which is a new concept based on the fact that most scientific data are digitalized and the amount of data is huge. The facilities to support informatics are cloud systems. Herein we propose a cloud system especially designed for science. The basic concepts, design, resources, implementation, and applications of the NICT science cloud are discussed.

Online social networks are gaining galloping upward momentum in a quick succession ever since from their inception as they lay a sturdy platform to share the information seeping into everyone who is concerned about it. In this spirited world substantial amount of success depends on how quickly one is able to reach out to the maximum number of people. There are very few who can have paramount consideration of influence on others. Crux of the problem is to pick right people whose influence is absolute in order to diffuse the influence with minimum effort. These seeding people can in turn be used to make an upward notion in areas like politics, all types of education including health and farming, introduce a product or service in the market, to revolutionize any formal setup environment of both private and public, training employees, changes in thinking patterns of the society and its life style, to propagate superior deliberations in the minds of people and likewise. In this paper Pareto front function is used to identify the eminent leaders which is followed by the empirical analysis of the results of evolution of their influence.

Future generation of wireless mobile communication aims to provide high speed Internet access along with support for high mobility to the end users. Mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e) has been developed in this direction in 2005 which provides broadband wireless Internet access up to 70Mbit/s. Its high speed enables various multimedia applications along with the conventional telephony service. These applications are categorized into classes like Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze according to their priority. In this paper we investigate the behavior of different scheduling algorithms for OFDMA/MIMO based WiMAX (IEEE 802.16m) architecture and analyze the quality of service (QoS) issues like throughput, end to end delay, interference, signal to noise ratio, call blocking probability and call dropping probability. For simulation, we used OPNET Modeler. The simulation results show high values of the QoS parameters although there is lack of consistency in some of those values that calls for further improvement in design, architecture and deployment strategy.

Analysis of gene expression is important in many fields of biological research in order to retrieve the required information. As the time advances, the illness in general and cancer in particular have become more and more complex and complicated, in detecting, analyzing and curing. Cancer research is one of the major research areas in the medical field. Accurate prediction of different tumor types has great value in providing better treatment and toxicity minimization on the patients. To minimize it, the data mining algorithms are important tool and the most extensively used approach to classify gene expression data and plays an important role for cancer classification. One of the major challenges is to discover how to extract useful information from datasets. This research is based on recent advances in the machine learning based microarray gene expression data analysis with three feature selection algorithms.

In this paper we propose a secure anonymous voting scheme (SAnoVS) for re-clustering in the ad-hoc network. SAnoVS extends our previous work of degree-based clustering algorithms by achieving anonymity and confidentiality of the voting procedure applied to select new cluster heads. The security of SAnoVS is based on the difficulty of computing discrete logarithms over elliptic curves, the intractability of inverting a one-way hash function and the fact that only neighboring nodes contribute to the generation of a shared secret. Furthermore, we achieve anonymity since our scheme does not require any identification information as we make use of a polynomial equation system combined with pseudo-random coordinates. The security analysis of our scheme is demonstrated with several attacks scenarios.

Feature extraction is the identification of appropriate measures to characterize the component images distinctly. Extracting features is one of the most important steps in any recognition system. Hence, in this paper, we explore the concept of Orthogonalized Fisher Discriminant (OFD) for unconstrained handwritten Kannada character recognition. OFD exhibits higher performance than Fisher Linear Discriminant (FLD) due to the elimination of dependences among discriminant vectors. For subsequent classification purpose, we explore the concept of probabilistic neural network (PNN) architecture. Experiments show that OFD methods are more effective and efficient than standard FLD for handwritten character recognition.

An Otto prism coupling setup with a spoof plasmon surface underneath is the centerpiece of work by S. A. Maier and co-workers, in which terahertz liquid sensing with figures-of-merit as high as 49 are demonstrated. On page 543, water molecules are shown to go onto the spoof plasmon surface, which consists of linear arrays of subwavelength grooves, tightly confining the spoof plasmons. The plasmons are sensitive to the refractive index of the dielectric filling the grooves, and phase jumps at spoof plasmon resonances provide the readout response. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Preamble design for LS channel estimation in OFDM/OQAM cooperative systems is investigated in this paper. A simple but important setup is considered, consisting of a pair of single-antenna terminals (source and destination) assisted in their communication by an AF relay and following a well-established two-phase transmission protocol. The so-called sparse preamble case (i.e., pilot tones surrounded by nulls) was recently addressed and the optimal design - in the sense of minimum MSE subject to transmit energy constraints - was shown to coincide with the one for CP-OFDM, thus resulting in no performance gains from the adoption of OFDM/OQAM. In order to complete this study and exhibit the possibilities of OFDM/OQAM to outperform CPOFDM, the so-called full preamble design (i.e., with all tones carrying pilot symbols) is addressed in this paper. The results are in line with the corresponding design for single-link systems, where the interference among pilots is positively exploited to provide significant performance gains over CP-OFDM. As a byproduct, the solution for cooperative CP-OFDM is also given, through its connection to OFDM/OQAM. The presented simulation results corroborate the analysis, demonstrating superior performance over CP-OFDM for both mildly and highly frequency selective channels and at practical SNR values.
