Computation intensive DSP applications usually require parallel/pipelined processors in order to meet specific timing requirements. data hazards are a major obstacle against the high performance of pipelined systems. This paper presents a novel efficient loop scheduling algorithm that reduces data hazards for such DSP applications. This algorithm has been embedded in a tool, called SHARP, which schedules a pipelined data flow graph to multiple pipelined units while hiding the underlying data hazards and minimizing the execution time. This paper reports significant improvement for some well-known benchmarks showing the efficiency of the scheduling algorithm and the flexibility of the simulation tool.

We study the problem of representing images within a multimedia database Management System (DBMS), in order to support fast retrieval operations without compromising storage efficiency. To achieve this goal, we propose new image coding techniques which combine a wavelet representation, embedded coding of the wavelet coefficients, and segmentation of image-domain regions in the wavelet domain. A bitstream is generated in which each image region is encoded independently of other regions, without having to explicitly store information describing the regions. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithms achieve coding performance which compares favorably, both perceptually and objectively, to that achieved using state-of-the-art image/video coding techniques while additionally providing region-based support.

A number of fully and partially recurrent networks have been proposed to deal with temporally extended tasks. However it is not yet clear which algorithms and network architectures are best suited to certain kinds of problems. In this paper we report on experimental investigations of a quantitative nature, which address this particular need by comparing fully recurrent networks using learning algorithms such as Backpropagation-through-time (BPTT), Batch BPTT, Quickprop-through-time, and Real-time Recurrent Learning with Elman and Jordan partially recurrent networks on four benchmark problems: detection of three consecutive zeros, nonlinear plant identification, Turing machine emulation, and real-world distillation column modelling.
