Single-phase grid-connected inverter (GCI) is a kind of single-phase voltage source converter (VSC), and as the indispensable tie unit between different power supplies, it is widely used in the fields of wind generation and solar PV generation. In the paper, as first, on the basis of the concept of the discontinuous pulse-width modulation (DPWM) for three-phase VSI, a new DPWM of single-phase GCI is presented by means of zero-sequence component injection. Then, the transformation from stationary frame (abc) to rotating frame (dq) is designed after reconstructing the other orthogonal current by means of one order all-pass filter. Finally, the presented DPWM based single-phase GCI is established, analyzed and simulated by means of MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation results show the validation of the above modulation algorithms, and the DPWM based single-phase GCR has reduced power loss and increased efficiency.

Snoring is one of the major symptoms of Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) which is associated with serious health consequences. In recent years, speech-like analysis of snores has been performed towards an alterative to polysomnography (PSG) which is considered the gold standard in the diagnosis of OSAS. Human auditory perception has the ability to distinguish between different sounds. In this study, we propose a new method to extract snores from the sound recordings and characterize OSAS using auditory image model, which represents human auditory processing. Our proposed techniques resulted in a sensitivity of 98.4% and specificity of 94.06% for snore and non-snore classification and sensitivity of 85.00±26.87 at a specificity of 95.00±15.81 % for OSAS and non-OSAS classification. These results may indicate the feasibility of developing an OSAS population-screening tool based on automated analysis of non-contact snore.

This paper presents a passive RFID tag with an embedded temperature sensor intended for the EPC Gen-2 protocol operating in the 902-928 MHz ISM band. The design is implemented as a node of a low cost temperature sensors network. The system is powered by a remote power through the RF energy received from the reader in order to create autonomous temperature measurement micro systems. The temperature sensor is based on ring oscillator using CMOS thyristor delay element. The energy recovery and power distribution unit of the RFID tag provides different supply voltages in order to optimize the performance and the power consumption of each building block. Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK) modulation architecture is adopted for Radio Frequency (RF) link which uses an envelope detector and non-coherent demodulation technique. For the temperature sensor, Low power operation is achieved by eliminating the use of power hungry Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs) at the sensor output. The design architecture is fully compliant to the EPC Gen-2 standard. The error in temperature sensing is around -1.8°C/+1°C, with a resolution of 0.3°C. The RFID tag achieves a sensitivity of -11 dBm with an input data rate up to 200 kbps from 1.8V. 0.5Vwas used as supply voltage for the temperature sensor to ensure the low power consumption as well as robustness. The proposed UHF RFID tag is implemented and simulated in 0.18μmCMOS process.

ZigBee is one of the latest technologies used in Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN). Designing an energy scalable ZigBee System on a Chip (SoC) is a demanding request for low power wireless sensor networks applications. In this paper, we focus on the main hardware module of the physical (PHY) layer of IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee devices, which is the binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modem for 868 MHz band. We propose a new multiplier-less design for an FPGA-based BPSK modem using VHDL language. A digital signal-processing technique is used in order to generate and detect the BPSK symbols. Although, the BPSK demodulator is designed to match ZigBee PHY layer standard requirements, it can be used for other applications with very simple modifications. The proposed design is validated through the implementation on the AMIRIX AP1000 development platform.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer. Timely diagnosis of BCC is an important factor in the prognosis of the disease. A key to BCC diagnosis are vascular structures of the lesion. Detection and recognition of cutaneous vasculature provide critical information on diagnosis accuracy and assessment precision. In this paper, we present an effective method to extract vascular information towards lesion diagnosis. Given a dermoscopy image, we first segment vascular structures of the lesion by decomposing the image using independent component analysis into melanin and hemoglobin components and further applying shape filters at different scales. A vessel mask is generated as a result of global thresholding. A set of vascular features are then extracted from the final vessel image of the lesion and fed into a Random Forest classifier. The method demonstrates performance of 90.3% in terms of AUC in differentiating BCC from benign lesions.

Uniform circular arrays are popular in direction finding applications because they show to be isotropic, i.e. they exhibit the same accuracy (in terms of the Cramer-Rao bound) at all possible planar look directions. We prove that this is not absolutely true if the constituent sensors are not isotropic. For instance, we specify how the anisotropic sensors should be directed and how many are needed in order to ensure an isotropic behavior of the array. We study, in more details, the performance of arrays of cardioid sensors, including anisotropic arrays of cardioid sensors.
