Optimal Design for Reducing Cogging Torque Using Auxiliary Poles of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors for Vehicle Actuator

SPMSM is used as an actuator that drives each system of automobiles according to the trend of automobile electrical equipment. When designing an automobile, it is required to reduce the vibration and noise of the SPMSM according to the miniaturization of an actuator and the need for motor control and quietness to reduce fuel efficiency. Cogging torque has a great influence on the noise and vibration generation of the motor, so it should be reduced as much as possible during design. Several studies have been conducted to reduce the cogging torque of SPMSM, but a comparative analysis of a method of minimizing cogging torque by designing a stator shape having an auxiliary pole is not widely known. Therefore, in this paper, a method that can effectively reduce the cogging torque of SPMSM using auxiliary poles was designed through finite element analysis, electrical characteristics were analyzed through finite element analysis for basic models without auxiliary poles and models with auxiliary poles. For the optimal design of motors with auxiliary poles, the main design factors of stators and rotors were derived to obtain the optimal design shape that meets the design goals using the reaction surface method. © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.

Consideration of Voltage Control Range Calculation and Its Impact in 3/2-Phase Switching Inverter for Short-Circuit Faults

This study addresses power quality degradation issues caused by short-circuit faults in 3/2-phase switching inverters by estimating and applying an optimized voltage control range. The ripple effects, including voltage distortion, power factor reduction, and efficiency loss due to the reduction in maximum phase voltage during a short-circuit event, were analyzed using PSIM simulations. Based on these analyses, the application of a voltage control range for the DC-link capacitor effectively reduced phase voltage waveform distortion, improved overmodulation issues, and maintained power factor and apparent power. Consequently, this study provides a solution to enhance the stability and reliability of renewable energy systems while maintaining power quality and maximizing energy efficiency. © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.

Two-Level Energy Management System for Integrated Active-Reactive Power Control in Power-Gas Sector Coupled Microgrid

This paper proposes a two-level energy management system to enhance the renewable energy integration capacity and economic operation of a power-gas sector coupled microgrid. The method was formulated as a master-slave based min-max optimization problem, considering the reactive power compensation capabilities of renewable energy resources, electrolyzer, and energy storage system. It ensured active power balance while incorporating reactive power management through its two-level structure. To validate its effectiveness, the method was compared with a benchmark system, which only considers active power balance, in an IEEE-33 bus system. The proposed method improved the average minimum voltage by 0.015 p.u. and enhanced the voltage deviation profile by 46.92%. The method reduced power purchases from the grid, saving daily operating cost by up to 211,703 KRW. These outcomes demonstrate that the proposed method enables stable and economical operation of power-gas sector coupled microgrid. Copyright © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.

Renewable energy has gained significant attention due to its eco-friendly nature and low carbon emissions. However, as the number of distributed energy resources (DERs) increases, they can influence the magnitude of fault currents in power systems. This change can affect the operating time of overcurrent relays (OCRs), potentially leading to large-scale blackouts or safety issues caused by overcurrent. Although research on superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) has been conducted to limit fault currents, the application of SFCLs in distribution systems with DERs can complicate the coordination between protective relays. In this paper, the protection coordination between OCRs in distribution system with induction generators through proper relay setting adjustment were studied. Study on Improvement of Protection Coordination Between OCR and UVR Due to SFCL’s Application in Power Distribution System with Induction Generator

In South Korea's power distribution system, where 154 kV substations supply multiple feeders, faults on one feeder can cause voltage drops across other feeders on the same bus. These voltage drops pose significant risks to feeders with sensitive loads, such as semiconductor manufacturing facilities, which are vulnerable to voltage sags, leading to productivity and economic losses. To mitigate these issues, Under Voltage Relays (UVRs) are employed. However, coordinating UVR's operation on sound feeders with Over Current Relay (OCR) on the faulted feeder becomes more complex, especially with the application of Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL). This paper analyzes the impact of applying SFCL and induction generator (IG) on the operation of OCR and UVR in power distribution system. To address issues of UVR's maloperation and delay of OCR's operation, this study proposes adjustments to the pickup values of both relays. The results show that increasing the UVR's pickup value prevents maloperation, while lowering the OCR's pickup value reduces operation delay, improving the protection coordination between protection relays. Notably, with both SFCL and IG applied, the OCR's pickup value can be set even lower, enabling faster fault clearance. This study presents an approach for protecting sensitive loads by properly adjusting the UVR's settings on feeders vulnerable to voltage sags, thereby facilitating rapid system's recovery. Study on the Analysis and Reduction Method for AC Copper Loss in Electric Vehicle Traction Motor

The advancements in electrified drive systems have enabled the design of high-power density electric vehicle (EV) motors. However, the increased operating frequency necessary for achieving high-power density amplifies AC copper losses, primarily due to skin and proximity effects. This study focuses on reducing AC copper losses in an 8-pole, 48-slot Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) using 2D finite element analysis (FEA). The analysis evaluates the contributions of skin and proximity effects to total copper losses and investigates the influence of slot leakage flux. Additionally, the impact of slot and conductor geometries on leakage flux, its variation over time, and the resulting AC copper losses were systematically analyzed. By balancing manufacturability and performance, optimal design parameters were derived to minimize AC copper losses. The results demonstrate that adjustments in slot width, slot dept., and conductor placement significantly affect leakage flux and copper losses. The proposed design strategies improve motor efficiency and thermal performance under high-speed operating conditions, contributing to the development of high-performance EV motors. Enhancing the Kubernetes Platform with a Load-Aware Orchestration Strategy

Microservice architecture is increasingly favored for building large-scale applications designed for deployment in distributed and resource-constrained cloud-to-edge computing environments. As a cloud-native approach, microservices are particularly powerful due to their loosely coupled, independently deployable, and scalable characteristics. These features enable distributed deployment and flexible integration across robust cloud data centers and heterogeneous, often resource-limited, edge nodes. To fully leverage these advantages, there is a need for advanced placement algorithms that can optimize application performance by utilizing the strengths of microservices. In response to these challenges, we propose to extend Kubernetes with a load-aware orchestration strategy, which enhances its capability to deploy microservice applications within shared clusters characterized by dynamic resource usage patterns. Our approach orchestrates applications dynamically, based on real-time resource usage, allowing for continuous adjustment of their placement to match evolving conditions. Evaluation of a prototype system in a testbed environment demonstrates that this approach offers substantial benefits compared to the standard Kubernetes scheduler. © The Author(s) 2025.

This research proposes a distance estimation method using Mono Camera-based object detection and dept. estimation to generate Point Cloud data. The study aims to enhance the applicability of Mono Cameras in autonomous vehicles and robots, reducing costs compared to Stereo Camera systems. The method utilizes YOLOv8 for object detection and dept. Anything V2 for dept. estimation. Results indicate that while the proposed method offers potential, it exhibits higher error rates in distance estimation compared to Stereo Camera-based approaches, primarily due to the limitations of current dept. estimation technologies. The study highlights the need for further improvements in dept. estimation models, particularly to address environmental factors such as lighting. Additionally, the research demonstrates that combining dept. estimation with bounding box methods helps reduce estimation errors, showing promise for more stable performance. Future work will focus on improving dept. estimation accuracy and making the proposed method more efficient for real-time applications, with the potential to integrate into Visual SLAM, a key technology in autonomous driving systems. © 2025 Korean Institute of electrical Engineers. Due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources (RESs) such as wind farms or solar farms, integrating these RESs into power systems can result in instability, affecting the power system's quality and stability. To address this issue, various energy storage systems (ESSs) used to compensate for power fluctuations or different flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) used to control voltage magnitude and active/reactive power injections were proposed to improve the stability of the connected power systems. Some effective supplementary damping controllers (SDCs) need to be designed by using suitable control theory for the ESSs or the FACTS devices to achieve the goal of stability improvement. A static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) joined with a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB)-based ESS is proposed to suppress subsynchronous resonance (SSR) occurring in a hybrid steam-turbine generator (STG)/offshore wind farm (OWF) system fed to an infinite bus through a series-capacitor compensated line. The OWF is based on a doubly-fed induction generator, and the d-q axis equivalent-circuit model of the studied system under three-phase balanced loading conditions is derived to establish the complete system model. An SDC of the STATCOM is designed using modal control theory to improve the damping of the dominant modes of the studied system. Small-signal stability and dynamic simulation results of the studied system are systematically performed to demonstrate that the STATCOM joined with the proposed VRFB-ESS with the designed SDC effectively suppresses the studied system's SSR. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Automation is advancing rapidly, with infrared (IR) communication being a key method for controlling electronic devices. Despite this, challenges remain in optimizing IR controllers for consistent performance across varying angles and task loads. A 3D design and a robust algorithm have been developed to enhance the system's accuracy, while security is ensured by matching a unique TOKEN with the Telegram bot for each session. Error rates were analyzed across different angles, with specific zones determined based on performance. Minimal error rates defined the working zone, while higher rates indicated critical and invalid zones. Error rates increased as the transmitter moved further from the optimal angles, such as a 0-6 % error rate when operating within a 0° - 5° range. Reaction time was calculated across multiple tasks, showing an average of 5 seconds per command. Mismatch rates, observed during higher task loads, rose sharply when handling many tasks. For instance, the mismatch rate was 0 % for 12 tasks but 20 % when executing 20 tasks. Performance evaluations demonstrated optimal IR signal strength for reliable control within a distance of 10 to 15 inches, with diminishing effectiveness beyond 20 inches. These findings provide a foundation for developing more reliable and efficient IR control systems for practical applications. © 2025 IEEE.
