Automation is advancing rapidly, with infrared (IR) communication being a key method for controlling electronic devices. Despite this, challenges remain in optimizing IR controllers for consistent performance across varying angles and task loads. A 3D design and a robust algorithm have been developed to enhance the system's accuracy, while security is ensured by matching a unique TOKEN with the Telegram bot for each session. Error rates were analyzed across different angles, with specific zones determined based on performance. Minimal error rates defined the working zone, while higher rates indicated critical and invalid zones. Error rates increased as the transmitter moved further from the optimal angles, such as a 0-6 % error rate when operating within a 0° - 5° range. Reaction time was calculated across multiple tasks, showing an average of 5 seconds per command. Mismatch rates, observed during higher task loads, rose sharply when handling many tasks. For instance, the mismatch rate was 0 % for 12 tasks but 20 % when executing 20 tasks. Performance evaluations demonstrated optimal IR signal strength for reliable control within a distance of 10 to 15 inches, with diminishing effectiveness beyond 20 inches. These findings provide a foundation for developing more reliable and efficient IR control systems for practical applications. © 2025 IEEE.

MOPO-HBT: A movie poster dataset for title extraction and recognition

Real-world images often encompass embedded texts that adhere to disparate disciplines like business, education, and amusement, to name a few. Such images are graphically rich in terms of font attributes, color distribution, foreground-background similarity, and component organization. This aggravates the difficulty of recognizing texts from these images. Such characteristics are very prominent in the case of movie posters. One of the first pieces of information on movie posters is the title. Automatic recognition of movie titles from images can aid in efficient indexing as well as information conveyance. However, it is accompanied by other texts like the names of actors, producers, taglines, dates, etc. Though the organization of components is somewhat similar across different film industries like Tollywood (West Bengal), Bollywood (Mumbai), and Hollywood (Los Angeles), the graffiti patterns differ in multifarious instances. To address the problem of movie title understanding, we propose a dataset named MOvie POsters-Hollywood Bollywood Tollywood (MOPO-HBT) that encompasses movie posters from the aforementioned industries. The entire dataset is publicly available (http://***/11564) for research purposes. The baseline results of title identification and recognition were obtained with a CNN-based (Convolutional Neural Network) approach, wherein the titles were extracted using the M-EAST (Modified-Efficient and Accurate Scene Text) detector model. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2023.

T-S Fuzzy Model-Based Energy-to-Peak Control of a Vehicle Longitudinal Control System Using a Complementary State Feedback Controller

This paper proposes a novel Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model-based state feedback controller design scheme that uses an auxiliary controller to improve the performance of the adaptive cruise control (ACC) system by employing the energy-to-peak control technique. In the proposed controller design scheme, the auxiliary control input is treated as a disturbance affecting the overall control input. Then, by limiting the norm of the auxiliary control input, the energy-to-peak control technique is applied to obtain the state feedback gain which guarantees the stabilization of the ACC system represented as a T-S fuzzy model. To find the controller gain, we propose linear matrix inequality (LMI)-based sufficient conditions to ensure both asymptotic stability and the energy-to-peak performance. Finally, we show that the steady-state error of the ACC control system can be improved by using the proposed control scheme from the simulation results. A Study on the Equivalent Controller Design for Transient Stability Simulation in Power System Planning

In this paper, an equivalent controller concept has been proposed to observe various future grid scenarios under the PSS/e dynamic simulation. The equivalent controller has been proposed to efficiently manage transient simulations with a large-scale power system planning database. Note that the sizes of renewable power plants and high-voltage direct current systems have grown to the point where their effects on the power system can no longer be neglected. To address these issues, it is imperative to create several future grid databases to ensure a stable and reliable power grid. The objective is to maximize stable dynamic simulation runs while minimizing the computing requirements. The proposed controller can be used to roughly observe stability trends. This method can efficiently manage dynamic simulations and provides a simple and fast simulation without requiring all the control blocks from manufacturers. © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.

Effective Ultrasound Focusing Techniques Using Nonlinear Frequency Modulation

Ultrasound stimulation for the treatment of osteoarthritis has proven to alleviate patient pain and has shown the potential for cartilage cell regeneration. To improve the treatment efficacy and ultrasound focusing, the use of larger aperture and higher frequency signals is desired, but it could result in grating lobe artifacts. To resolve this challenge, this study proposes a new ultrasound stimulation technique that modulates the frequency during transmission to dynamically shift the temporal and spatial position of the grating lobes. The proposed method disperses the angle of the grating lobes over time by continuously modulating the frequency within a specific frequency range, including both linear and nonlinear modulations. To validate our approach, we produced 3-D acoustic beam fields under beam steering conditions. A transmit pulse with a single frequency at 2 MHz was compared to linear and nonlinear frequency-modulated pulses with a frequency ranging from 1-to-3 MHz. Additionally, we modeled a 64-channel 8x8 2-D array with a center frequency of 2 MHz and a 60% fractional bandwidth using MATLAB and Field II programs. For quantitative evaluation, we estimated the beam width at −3 dB and the intensity variation between the main and grating lobes, and the peak intensity at the focus. Overall, we found that the grating lobe decreased by up to −9.83 dB in our configurations and demonstrated that frequency modulation-based ultrasound stimulation shows the potential for reducing grating lobe, which is expected to be applicable to improve the safety and performance of osteoarthritis treatment. Development of an Analytical Model for Frequency Stability Analysis of Power Systems with Renewable Energy Integration Expansion

In power systems with a high share of renewable energy, the reduced number of synchronous generators in operation leads to weakened system strength. This lack of robustness causes challenges in frequency stability analysis simulations, as voltage instability often occurs before frequency dynamics can be adequately analyzed. This paper proposes an equivalent model for frequency stability assessment in power systems with high renewable energy penetration. The model enables frequency analysis independently of system strength. By aggregating multiple synchronous generators while preserving frequency response characteristics and reducing the system to minimize localized voltage instability issues, the proposed approach ensures accurate frequency analysis. The validity of the proposed model is verified using the Modified IEEE 39-bus system. © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.

Controller Design of a DAB Converter for Battery Charging and Discharging Applications

Recently, as the demand for DC systems has rapidly increased, research on battery chargers has been conducted extensively. Among DC/DC converters, the DAB converter has the advantage of enabling ZVS(Zero Voltage Switching) operation and securing bidirectional power transmission and insulation by using a transformer in a left-right symmetrical structure. Since bidirectional operation is possible, it is widely used in DC grid systems and battery chargers. This paper proposes a switching method that integrates three switching methods, TPS, EPS, and SPS, for efficient converter operation in a wide load range. In addition, a controller that smoothly operates CC-CV (Constant Current–Constant Voltage) mode conversion and has self-protection operation is proposed, and the operating characteristics are verified through simulation and experiments using the fabricated DAB converter. © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.

In industry, the advancement of digital engineering and the digital thread aims to reduce the impact of knowledge ‘siloes’ by providing a way to integrate data across the entire system lifecycle and across multiple domains. In a typical engineering curriculum, however, courses are still treated as ‘siloes’, and students often do not have the opportunity to experience this industrially relevant approach to engineering. The Digital engineering Factory (DEF) is a digital engineering environment under development at the University of Arizona to support engineering students. The DEF supports students by providing access to multiple engineering tools and is structured using a ‘hub-and-spoke’ approach to consolidate data from these tools. Through this connected architecture, students can transfer data generated in a particular course to tools for use in other courses. Connecting course activities in this way enables students to experience a complete end-to-end system lifecycle. At its ‘hub’, the DEF uses Violet to integrate data from multiple sources, create a digital thread, and generate a graph representation of the dataset. This knowledge graph, written in the Ontological Modeling Language (OML), can be viewed in OML Rosetta and is structured according to the University of Arizona Ontology Stack (UAOS). The use of the UAOS and OML Rosetta allows instructors to leverage semantic web technologies to support teaching activities such as grading. In this paper, the authors review the objectives of the DEF, discuss the status of the project, and highlight current limitations and lessons learned with regards to its deployment. The weather-dependent variability of line impedance can substantially impair the accuracy of traditional power flow calculations in electric grids, especially under varying and extreme weather conditions. Recently, significant advancements have been made in weather-dependent power flow (WDPF) algorithms to address this issue in transmission systems. However, determining line parameters in three-phase unbalanced distribution grids remains time-consuming due to the nonlinear and analytically intractable nature of heat-balance functions. To achieve fast and high-fidelity calculations, this paper proposes a novel data-aided WDPF algorithm leveraging readily available weather information to calibrate line parameters in real time. The method enhances the classic backward-forward sweep approach for unbalanced distribution grids by incorporating real-time updates of line parameters based on the thermal model of line conductors during the iterative power flow process. Additionally, well-trained neural networks are employed to expedite power flow calculations by solving line temperature variables. Case studies on two unbalanced IEEE feeders demonstrate that the proposed algorithm surpasses state-of-the-art WDPF algorithms in computational efficiency and accuracy under diverse weather conditions. © 2025 IEEE.

Low-power and low-complexity Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) estimation is a critical challenge in various signal processing applications. This paper presents a data-driven approach using a neural network framework designed for single-snapshot, one-bit quantized measurements, enabling significant hardware simplification. We explore a Fully Connected (FC) Neural Network architecture (which is identical to a 1D convolutional architecture in the single-snapshot case) trained end-to-end on raw quantized data. The performance of this learned approach is rigorously compared against the well-established MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC) and Complex-valued Binary Iterative Hard Thresholding (CBIHT) algorithms. Our findings reveal that the proposed neural network achieves superior estimation performance compared to these, especially under low SNR values and in the presence of realistic array imperfections. We observe significant performance gains even without explicitly training the network on data with such imperfections, highlighting the generalization capabilities of the proposed method. © 2025 IEEE.
