A Study on Efficiency of Improving Congestion Based on Distributed Pumped Storage Power Plant

In order to minimize transmission constraints when delivering electric power from non-metropolitan areas to metropolitan area through the seven metropolitan tie-lines, it is necessary to construct eco-friendly power plants and transmission networks. This paper proposes the introduction of distributed pumped storage power generation utilizing the upper reservoir of an existing multipurpose hydroelectric power plant. First, based on the power system data of the 10th Basic Plan for Supply and Demand of Power, we analyze the northward current by assuming that 3GW of distributed pumped storage power generation is connected to the metropolitan area using PSS/E. We propose a congestion control method using the PTDF and GSF based on the change in the active power. Finally, we calculate the congestion of the seven metropolitan tie-lines and evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed distributed pumped storage power plant using PTDF and GSF. A simple analytical method for accurate prediction of the leakage reactance and leakage energy in high-voltage transformers

Transformers are one of the most crucial pieces of equipment for the distribution and transmission of electric power. A high-voltage transformer plays a vital role to reduce power losses during the transmission of electricity. Leakage reactance plays a vital role in the working and stability of the transformer. The accurate prediction of the leakage reactance is a great asset to the transformer designers during the manufacturing stage to attain the dynamically optimum design of the transformer. In the literature, mostly given analytical techniques for leakage reactance calculations are applied to the transformers with the symmetric axial heights of the low-voltage, and high-voltage windings. Therefore, a proper analytical prediction for the leakage reactance in the transformer with asymmetric axial heights is needed to implement an optimized design. This paper proposes a new advanced method for an accurate calculation of the leakage reactance and leakage energies in different parts of the transformer with symmetrical and asymmetrical axial heights of the windings. Moreover, the finite element method and three different analytical methods are also compared with a new analytical technique for 5 real cases. For 2 cases, the proposed method's results are also verified by experimental tests. The method's accuracy in predicting the stored energy and leakage reactance of the high-voltage transformer is found to be more accurate and much simpler than the other analytical methods. © 2022 The Authors

In smart factory manufacturing processes, irregular and uncertain environmental factors can lead to unexpected equipment failures or abnormal operations, resulting in product defects, safety incidents, and energy waste, which ultimately reduce productivity. To prevent these issues and ensure stable equipment operation, it is essential to accurately predict not only equipment failures but also energy consumption. Maximizing energy efficiency requires a predictive model that comprehensively considers both equipment status and energy usage patterns. This study proposes a machine learning-based flow pattern prediction model using power data from smart factory manufacturing processes. The model utilizes Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithms to predict equipment power consumption and flow patterns. By applying these prediction models to a digital twin framework, the study demonstrates the potential to optimize energy consumption. Copyright © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.

The proliferation of 5G technologies has presented challenges such as signal attenuation and high energy consumption. This study proposes a novel approach to enhance wireless networks by integrating Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimize signal propagation and predict the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). A new framework combines K-means clustering for IRS deployment with a Temporal Convolutional Network-Gated Recurrent Unit (TCN-GRU) model for signal prediction. Using data from 15,000 Wi-Fi access points in Herefordshire, UK, the results demonstrate significant improvements in signal strength, with the proposed model achieving a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 37% lower than the existing models, indicating higher prediction accuracy. In addition to enhancing signal quality, the framework achieves throughput increases of 21.26% with single-group IRS and 64.91% with multi-group IRS. These results validate the proposed the potential of the framework to improve performance, making it suitable for next-generation wireless networks. © 2025 IEEE.

This paper presents a robust discrete nonlinear active disturbance rejection controller (NADRC) for precise actuator position control in a highly nonlinear and uncertain pneumatic system. The discrete NADRC features a nonlinear extended state observer (NESO) and a feedback controller, which together estimate and compensate for unknown system dynamics and external disturbances, ensuring robustness. The controller was implemented on a pneumatic actuator in Parker Hannifin’s motion control lab. Experimental tests confirmed its tracking performance and robustness. The stability of the positioning control systems is proved using a Lyapunov method. © 2024 IEEE.

The paper presents the optimization of a bi-phase hybrid stepper motor (HSM) using a 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) model. The motor is designed for space applications, has a 1° step, and specific outer dimensions. Different shapes of the rotor magnet and stator laminations were modeled to achieve the highest possible holding torque. The ratio between the tooth width and the tooth pitch of the HSM was chosen as 0.4 to maximize holding torque. Single, double, and triple-stack constructions were computed, and the motor’s holding torque values were compared. The 3D FEM model is complex as it includes the motor’s refined geometry, such as its very narrow airgap, the end windings, and the surrounding air, which allows computing the magnetic leakage flux. © 2025, Politechnica University of Bucharest. Extensively used in electric vehicles (EVs), lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, undergo significant degradation after several charge-discharge cycles, leading to their retirement from high-demand applications. However, these batteries can still serve fewer demanding applications in their second life. Estimating the State of Health (SoH) in second-life applications is crucial for ensuring their reliable performance. This paper presents a method for SoH estimation using a Support Vector Regression (SVR) model trained in first-life battery data and applied to second-life usage. Two health indicators, TIECVD (Time Interval of Equal Charging Voltage Difference) and TIEDVD (Time Interval of Equal Discharging Voltage Difference) are extracted from voltage measurements and used as predictors in the SVR model. The method is validated using NASA's battery ageing dataset, consisting of three batteries (B0005, B0006, and B0007) with a rated capacity of 2 Ah. The proposed model achieves RMSE values of 0.0061, 0.0158, and 0.0047 for the respective batteries during second life SoH estimation. This approach provides a practical, low-cost solution for estimating battery health in second-life applications without extensive monitoring systems. © 2025 IEEE.

In this research study, we present a novel design of a four-fingered robotic hand for T-FLoW 4.0 humanoid robot along with its experiments to validate its grasping performance. Our proposed robotic hand designed with four fingers and five Degree-of-Freedom (DoF), with a configuration of a thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers to remain within the criteria of an anthropomorphic type robot hand. Our hand is built with a modular design on each finger and its mechanism, allowing for easy assembly and achieving a compact hand result. Main controller Arduino Mega implement the system for grasping movement, and then PCA9685 PWM controller get the hand movement instructions from it and generates the required PWM signal for the servo motors. The process of manufacturing the hand involves 3D printing technology to produce hands with a realistic appearance, and use PLA filament material achieve lightweight, affordable, and easy-To-maintain outcomes. The grasping experimental results show that our proposed robotic hand could perform basic grasping movements on household objects. With the use of Cini's taxonomy of grasp as the hand functionality standard, we achieved a success rate of 8 out of 14 tests conducted. © 2023 IEEE.

We consider a setting involving N agents, where each agent interacts with an environment modeled as a Markov Decision Process (MDP). The agents' MDPs differ in their reward functions, capturing heterogeneous objectives/tasks. The collective goal of the agents is to communicate intermittently via a central server to find a policy that maximizes the average of long-term cumulative rewards across environments. The limited existing work on this topic either only provide asymptotic rates, or generate biased policies, or fail to establish any benefits of collaboration. In response, we propose Fast-FedPG - a novel federated policy gradient algorithm with a carefully designed bias-correction mechanism. Under a gradient-domination condition, we prove that our algorithm guarantees (i) fast linear convergence with exact gradients, and (ii) sublinear rates that enjoy a linear speedup w.r.t. the number of agents with noisy, truncated policy gradients. Notably, in each case, the convergence is to a globally optimal policy with no heterogeneity-induced bias. In the absence of gradient-domination, we establish convergence to a first-order stationary point at a rate that continues to benefit from collaboration. © 2024 IEEE.

Sensor fusion in complex systems often relies on well-calibrated, expert sensors to achieve accurate and reliable outcomes. Integrating untrained or inexpert sensors into such networks poses significant challenges such as the cost associated with manually training them for the overall network objective. This paper presents an adaptive Kalman filter (AKF) approach to seamlessly incorporate an inexpert sensor into an established sensor network. By leveraging the existing trained sensors, the proposed method dynamically adjusts the inexpert sensor's parameters, enabling it to contribute effectively to the overall system. We evaluate the performance of this approach using absolute errors and Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence. Preliminary results show that the proposed AKF achieves a KL divergence on the order of 10-4 in a binary classification task, significantly outperforming a recursive density estimation method. It is also shown that in a diverging multivariate target tracking problem, after being trained, two inexpert sensors successfully contribute to a sensor network, even after temporarily removing the expert sensor. © 2025 IEEE.
