T-S Fuzzy Model-Based Energy-to-Peak Control of a Vehicle Longitudinal Control System Using a Complementary State Feedback Controller

This paper proposes a novel Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model-based state feedback controller design scheme that uses an auxiliary controller to improve the performance of the adaptive cruise control (ACC) system by employing the energy-to-peak control technique. In the proposed controller design scheme, the auxiliary control input is treated as a disturbance affecting the overall control input. Then, by limiting the norm of the auxiliary control input, the energy-to-peak control technique is applied to obtain the state feedback gain which guarantees the stabilization of the ACC system represented as a T-S fuzzy model. To find the controller gain, we propose linear matrix inequality (LMI)-based sufficient conditions to ensure both asymptotic stability and the energy-to-peak performance. Finally, we show that the steady-state error of the ACC control system can be improved by using the proposed control scheme from the simulation results. A Study on the Equivalent Controller Design for Transient Stability Simulation in Power System Planning

In this paper, an equivalent controller concept has been proposed to observe various future grid scenarios under the PSS/e dynamic simulation. The equivalent controller has been proposed to efficiently manage transient simulations with a large-scale power system planning database. Note that the sizes of renewable power plants and high-voltage direct current systems have grown to the point where their effects on the power system can no longer be neglected. To address these issues, it is imperative to create several future grid databases to ensure a stable and reliable power grid. The objective is to maximize stable dynamic simulation runs while minimizing the computing requirements. The proposed controller can be used to roughly observe stability trends. This method can efficiently manage dynamic simulations and provides a simple and fast simulation without requiring all the control blocks from manufacturers. © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.

Detection of Series Arc Faults Through Power Variation Analysis in the Frequency Domain

In this study, we analyzed power signal characteristics under series arc fault conditions, which can occur due to poor connections or deteriorated wiring, posing significant risks to electrical systems. The research focused on examining power fluctuations caused by series arcs under controlled experimental conditions, using test specimens that simulate arc fault scenarios. Voltage and current signals were sampled at 20 kHz, enabling detailed harmonic analysis. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) was applied to extract harmonic components within the 0-10 kHz range, specifically targeting multiples of 60 Hz. Active power (P) and reactive power (Q) were calculated for each cycle, and the results were normalized using apparent power (S) from steady-state conditions without arc faults. The analysis of power variations between successive cycles revealed distinct fluctuations linked to arc faults, providing insights into the development of more effective power signal analysis and detection techniques. © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.

Proposal and Analysis of a DC Superconducting Fault Current Limiting Circuit Breaker with Adjustable CLR

This paper suggests DC superconducting current limiting (SCL) circuit breaker (CB) that consists of two mechanical switchs (SWs), adjustable current limiting reactor (CLR) and two superconducting (SC) elements. The suggested DC SCL-CB can have advantage to perform DC fault current limiting and interrupting operation and two SWs’ sequential opening operation comprising DC SCL-CB by control circuit can protect two SC elements from DC fault current as well. Through DC short-circuit tests, SW1 was confirmed to alleviates the power burden on SC1 element and lower turn ratio of adjustable CLR was analyzed to be contributed to fast interrupting operation of SW2 by quench of SC2 element. Effective Ultrasound Focusing Techniques Using Nonlinear Frequency Modulation

Ultrasound stimulation for the treatment of osteoarthritis has proven to alleviate patient pain and has shown the potential for cartilage cell regeneration. To improve the treatment efficacy and ultrasound focusing, the use of larger aperture and higher frequency signals is desired, but it could result in grating lobe artifacts. To resolve this challenge, this study proposes a new ultrasound stimulation technique that modulates the frequency during transmission to dynamically shift the temporal and spatial position of the grating lobes. The proposed method disperses the angle of the grating lobes over time by continuously modulating the frequency within a specific frequency range, including both linear and nonlinear modulations. To validate our approach, we produced 3-D acoustic beam fields under beam steering conditions. A transmit pulse with a single frequency at 2 MHz was compared to linear and nonlinear frequency-modulated pulses with a frequency ranging from 1-to-3 MHz. Additionally, we modeled a 64-channel 8x8 2-D array with a center frequency of 2 MHz and a 60% fractional bandwidth using MATLAB and Field II programs. For quantitative evaluation, we estimated the beam width at −3 dB and the intensity variation between the main and grating lobes, and the peak intensity at the focus. Overall, we found that the grating lobe decreased by up to −9.83 dB in our configurations and demonstrated that frequency modulation-based ultrasound stimulation shows the potential for reducing grating lobe, which is expected to be applicable to improve the safety and performance of osteoarthritis treatment. Analysis of Current Limit and Interruption Characteristics of R-SFCL and Arm Inductor According to Fault Location of MMC based HVDC

High voltage direct current (HVDC) has gained prominence as a method for connecting renewable energy sources and interconnecting electric power systems between countries. Recently, the modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been developed and is undergoing construction worldwide. MMC-HVDC represents a new conversion technology that can address the issues of switching loss and harmonics. During a fault in the MMC-HVDC system, the fault current rises rapidly due to the discharging of the SM capacitor, making it difficult to interrupt with continuous AC side current feed. This phenomenon leads to the destruction of semiconductor devices. To resolve this issue, superconducting fault current limiters with fast response characteristics have been applied to the MMC. The SM capacitor discharge continues until all IGBTs are blocked. Generally, the IGBT block delay is about 3 ms. However, the response time of the Resistive SFCL (R-SFCL) is faster than 3 ms. In this study, the characteristics of R-SFCL and the arm inductor under multiple fault locations in a long cable of the MMC system are confirmed using PSCAD. The R-SFCL is modeled based on actual experimental data. As a result, as the inductor’s capacity increases, the peak current decreases, and the farther the fault location is, the faster the DC current reaches zero-point. Conversely, in the case of R-SFCL, as the resistance increases, the peak current decreases, and the closer the fault location is, the faster the DC current reaches zero-point. © 2024 Korean Institute of electrical Engineers. Shaft Design by Kinetic Characteristic of Linear Electric Machine

electrical machinery with rotating or linear mass requires a support system that can resist dynamic forces and the resulting vibrations. The excess of such vibrations may be detrimental to the machinery and its support system. Especially, it becomes more and more important for dynamic equipment foundations due to various design criteria and methods and procedures of analysis, design and construction. For stable operation of the equipment foundations, kinetics is an important tool in understanding the motion of objects whether translational, oscillatory, or circular. In case of translating or linear oscillating masses, the behavior of variables such as speed and acceleration (deceleration) must be described by the equations of motion. Of importance is the mechanical robustness, because a linear electric machine has to withstand high accelerations resulting from the oscillating masses. This paper deals with the design of shaft and bolt is achieved by fatigue analysis based on the kinetic equation considering mechanical load. The results of the study will give elaborate information about stable and effective movement data of linear electric machine. Copyright © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.

A Study of Development of Cylindrical Linear Generator for Bladeless Wind Power Generation System

This study focuses on the modeling and analysis of the cylindrical linear generator for a bladeless wind power generation to overcome the limitations and drawbacks of conventional wind turbines. A bladeless wind power generation system has the advantages of low land requirement for installation and maintenance cost compared to a blade wind power turbine. As a results, it is practicable to microgrid by installation on the roof of apartments and buildings, which can maximize unused efficiency. However, a comprehensive study of generator for bladeless wind power generation is still missing in terms of design process such as design and evaluation method. The goal of the research is to analyze the characteristics of cylindrical linear generator oscillating with back-iron and PM for bladeless wind power systems. The proposed generator will be analyzed using magnetic energy by two-dimensional equivalent magnetic circuit network method, and then it has been proved by finite element method and evaluated by manufacture and experiment. Finally, the results of this project will give elaborate information about new generator structures for wind power system and provide insights into the characteristics of bladeless wind power generation. Monthly Electric Power Sales Forecasting Algorithm Using LSTM-XGBoost Ensemble Model

Electric power sales forecasting is important from various perspectives, including the nation, power producers, and sellers. At the national level, it serves as foundational information for electricity supply efficiency, energy policy establishment, and integration of renewable energy. Power producers utilize it for optimal operation and planning of power plants, and decisions on power plant expansion and investment. Sellers can use it for monthly energy balance evaluation, operational efficiency improvement, and financial analysis. In this paper, we analyze factors that affect electric power sales to predict medium and long-term electricity sales volume, and based on this, input variables that have a high correlation with monthly electricity sales volume are selected. Then, the LSTM-based deep neural network model and XGBoost model are learned using the selected data. We construct an ensemble model by combining the monthly forecasts of each model using a voting method and present an algorithm to predict electricity sales for the next 24 months. The proposed ensemble model showed improved performance over the prediction model using a single technique. Copyright © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.

A Study on Increase Power Production in Photovoltaic Power Systems Applying the OS MPPT Method

This paper, we conducted a study on methods for improving the power production efficiency of photovoltaic power systems using machine learning. The InC method, one of the MPPT methods used to improve the power production efficiency of photovoltaic power systems, determines the power production efficiency by the size of the slope, and to compensate for the disadvantages that occur in this process, we propose an OS MPPT (Optimized Slope MPPT) method that optimizes the constant α value that determines the size of the slope by introducing the optimization method of machine learning. The effects of the OS MPPT method were analyzed through simulation experiments and field experiments. The results of comparing the calculated values by accumulating the produced power showed that the performance of the OS MPPT control method was effective. It is expected to contribute to the promotion of power production when applied to photovoltaic power systems. Copyright © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.
