The selection of only the most suitable COTS software product is an indispensable task in commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) based software development (CBSD) that should be done circumspectly. The success of such a development depends on the evaluation & selection methodology being followed which is expected to separate the wheat from the chaff. Thorough approach for evaluation and selection of COTS products (TAES-COTS) proposed in this paper is an approach that evaluates COTS products based on progressive filtration. It is a five step approach that evaluates products against different criteria at three different stages. It evaluates COTS software based on both functional and non-functional requirements and assists the evaluators in choosing the optimal software product in times of uncertainty.

The problem of insider threats is not new to organizations and research community. Organization cannot afford any kinds of attacks on their confidential information and resources either from insiders or out-siders. The damage done by insiders is more severe than that of external attackers due to their knowledge about the system and potential targets. It has been observed by studying previous case studies of insider attacks that insiders usually get involve in some unusual or suspicious activities prior to launching actual attacks. So observing these kinds of activities and taking proper actions in time may help to avoid such kinds of attacks. In this paper a risk assessment methodology has been presented to compute the threat levels of insiders. Appropriate actions may be taken by knowing about the threat level of each user in order to avoid actual attacks. The methodology not only incorporates technical measures but also some psychological indicators to detect insiders. The difference of this methodology from the previous ones is that it provides a practical way of quantization of risks for insider threats. The methodology is simulated in a test network against different scenarios and results showed that it efficiently categorized users according to their threat level. So it provides a base to deploy non uniform security policies among the users thus reducing overall processing overheads.

The presented paper exhibits a coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed symmetrical staircase shaped, planar monopole Ultra Wideband (UWB) antenna having dimensions 4030×l.6mm3 with 5GHz WLAN notch band characteristic. The staircase pattern in the radiating patch and the U-shaped slot resonator in the feed line are used to achieve the UWB and notch the 5GHz WLAN band, respectively. The proposed antenna has impedance bandwidth ranging from 2.84GHz-13.9GHz to cover UWB. Interference caused by WLAN band from 5.15GHz-5.35GHz and 5.725GHz-5.825GHz is notched effectively. The proposed antenna has been printed on FR4 substrate with dielectric constant of 4.4 and thickness of 1.6mm. Moreover, the fabricated prototype antenna shows a good agreement between the simulated and measured results. © 2013 IEEE.

Localization of sources of brain electrical activity from electroencephalographic and magnetoencephalographic recordings is an ill-posed inverse problem. Therefore, the best one can hope for is to derive a source localization method which is guaranteed to find sources belonging to the set of possible solutions to this problem. Recently, a few methods with this property have been proposed as a non-trivial generalizations of the classical neural activity index based on the linearly constrained minimum-variance (LCMV) spatial filtering technique. In this paper we propose a family of reduced-rank activity indices achieving maximum value when evaluated at true source locations for uncorrelated dipole sources and any nonzero rank constraint. This fact shows in particular that this key property is not confined to a selected few activity indices. We present a series of numerical simulations evaluating localization performance of the proposed activity indices. We also give an overview of areas of future research which should be considered as an extension of the results of this paper. In particular, we discuss how new families of activity indices can be derived based on the proposed technique. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Power-Line Interference (PLI) may seriously distort the ECG (Electrocardiogram) signal rendering the ECG analysis inaccurate. Various types of Notch filtering and adaptive cancellation schemes have been used to eliminate PLI interference from ECG. In this paper we propose an enhanced adaptive noise canceller (ANC) based on State Space Recursive Least Square (SSRLS) for elimination of PLI. SSRLS algorithm is a state space model-dependent recursive algorithm characterized by fast rate of convergence and hence exhibits excellent tracking performance. State-space formulation of noise model enables SSRLS filter to be implemented in an instinctive manner in comparison to other approaches. The proposed method is very effective for online tracking of PLI without requiring a reference noise source. The proposed method can also be employed to filter out the PLI even when corrupted ECG signal has low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). © 2013 Cairo University, Egypt.

The modelling of physical systems is very important phenomena in today's world due to easy understanding of their dynamics. There are several methods to model the physical systems, one of which is the bond graph technique which is the graphical representation of the physical dynamics of the systems. In this paper, we have modelled the heat mechanism of a biomedical baby incubator that is used to keep babies warm and safe from infections. There are four types of heat transfer mechanism in baby incubator which are conduction, convection, evaporation and radiation. In this study, we have modelled the evaporation mechanism through Pseudo bond graph technique using 20-Sim software package. Later on we have designed a PID Controller to control and monitor the characteristics of evaporation. Our simulation results shows that a baby incubator as an open system can be modelled and analysed for better design using bond graph simulations.

This paper presents design of an anthropomorphic prosthetic hand which is actuated through single transducer. To provide more accurate and detailed model for the digital simulation of prosthesis, the Bond Graph approach is used. The prosthesis has five phalanges. Because of different parameters (length, width and weight), each phalange acts as an individual module to be designed but ultimately controlled by single source. The phalanges are actuated using flexible strings which are running over the pulleys and fixed with the transducer shaft. The damping of the pulleys and gears, stiffness of the strings, and inertias of each phalange are modeled precisely to provide better performance under different circumstances. Bond graph technique proved to be the more detailed and analytical way of designing the prosthetics to make them more controllable and efficient in the applications where highly précised functionality is desired. The transducer commissioned for the actuation of the prosthetic has also been modeled using Bond graph technique so that its functionality could be analyzed more efficiently. Considering backlash of the reducer part of transducer as an uncertainty to the prosthesis dynamics, a robust controller is designed so that the position of the phalanges could be controlled precisely and the prosthetic hand could mimic the movements more efficiently.

Loop filter is an essential part of the phase locked loop. It removes the high frequency oscillations and generates the appropriate control signals for the voltage controlled oscillator. Besides it also reduces the effects of oscillator pulling and prevents injection locking. In this work the loop filter is designed using novel discrete time sliding mode controller design technique. A novel reaching law for continuous and discrete time systems has been proposed. The proposed reaching law uses exponential function in its gain term and has variable gain which is high when the states are away from the sliding manifold and reduces once the sliding phase starts. The stability of the proposed reaching law is proved using Lyapunov's method. The proposed reaching law also reduced the chattering at the control input and has been found suitable for the design of digital phase locked loops. Simulation results show significant reduction of chattering effect and better performance of the proposed sliding mode controller based phase locked loop.
