In this paper, we propose a method for exploiting the dependence of four dynamic features (horizontal trajectory, vertical trajectory, pressure and velocity) upon angles of each sample point from the mean of the signature. We have achieved this purpose by decomposing each of these four dynamic features into two partitions. As a result we obtain eight discriminating features, out of which we have selected two most stable features on the basis of training signatures scatter on two dimensional dissimilarity space. These two most stable features are then employed for verification purpose. Result shows the promise of our proposed technique.

We report on two types of wavelength conversion techniques that are based on gain saturation effect in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). In these amplifiers the gain saturation occurs when the optical density at the gain medium is high enough to result in depletion of the population inversion by stimulated emission. In each case, the fiber ring laser is assembled using a variable fiber coupler, a narrowband optical filter and the gain medium. For external input power values higher than the determined threshold value of the ring resonator, the gain will be saturated. Because the wavelength of the external laser is different from the oscillating wavelength of the ring resonator, the optical power at the output of the resonator is drastically decreased (low-state). On the other hand, when the input of the external laser is below the threshold value the output power of the resonator increases (high-state). In our experiment the operating wavelengths of the ring resonators are 1314 nm and 1553 nm for the SOA and EDFA respectively. The input signal is modulated around the threshold value for frequencies of 20 MHz and 1 MHz and resonator lengths of around 8 m and 16 m for the SOA and EDFA cases respectively. Both systems exhibit high contrast modulation of 41 dB and 33 dB at the output port for the low/high states of the SOA and EDFA ring lasers respectively.

Electrogastrography (EGG) is a significant reference of the myoelectric activity of the gastrointestinal tract and indicates whether it has a disease or not. There have been numerous studies of the myoelectric activity in a stomach, but only a few studies of the intestines because of the difficulty of measurement in the intestines. Recently, the technology of the biotelemetry capsule for measurement of internal information in the human digestive tract has been developed. In the current study, an EGG telemetry system using the developed biotelemetry technology was designed and implemented for measuring EGG in intestines. The EGG capsule converts the acquired EGG value to digital data, which is transmitted from the capsule to the external receiver. The performance of the telemetry capsule for the EGG monitoring in the gastrointestinal tract was verified by in-vitro animal experiments. From the experiment, it was verified that the EGG telemetry capsule can measures a slow wave in intestines.

In this paper, a simplified analysis technique for the Integrated Cellular and Ad hoc Relay (iCAR) systems is presented. First, a simple two-cell system is analyzed using a multi-dimensional Markov-chain. The performance metric employed is the call blocking probability of each cell in the system. To this end, first a closed-form expression for the call blocking probability in the two-cell system is provided. Then, it is shown that these closed-form expressions could be used to analyze more practical systems. The accuracy of the developed simple analytical expressions is checked and verified by comparing the results predicted by these analytical expressions with simulation results. It is shown that there is an excellent match between analytical and simulation results.

A new procedure for registering brain MRI from different individuals with large anatomical differences is presented, and applied to the registration of images of patients with a brain tumor with an atlas. The key steps are the implantation of a synthetic tumor in the atlas and a novel robust image registration technique. Application of this procedure to the determination of abnormalities in the electrical activity of patients with brain tumors is presented as well.

This paper presents a video object motion tracking architecture that can be used for very low bit rate online video applications. The architecture prototypes a 2D mesh-based video object motion tracking algorithm. It can be used as a building block for 2D mesh-based video object systems such as MPEG-4 and MPEG-7 systems. Moreover, the power consumption and the delay show that the prototype can be used in mobile online video applications. © 2001 IEEE.

In the past decade robotics and the Internet, fed by the great advances in computing and networking, matured into giant interdisciplinary scientific fields. Therefore, it is not surprising that many are trying to merge these two technologies and develop Internet-based robotic teleoperation. More interestingly, Internet-based bilateral teleoperation, where supermedia is fed back to the operator in order to increase efficiency and achieve telepresence. Supermedia is the collection of multimedia (video, audio,…), haptic and other sensory information. This paper studies supermedia enhanced teleoperation via the Internet, concentrating on the real-time control of such systems and their performance. The potential of this technology and its advantages will be explored. In addition, key issues, such as stability, synchronization and transparency, will be analyzed and studied. Specifically, event-based planning and control of Internet-based teleoperation systems is presented with experimental results of several implemented system scenarios. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

A key problem of finding the most complete and useful theory of consciousness may revolve around how to empirically determine different styles or states of consciousness and how to incorporate these within a single paradigm. This was our motivation to start examination of EEG correlates of some activities or substates of consciousness which occur spontaneously or are induced artificially. Our investigations demonstrated more or less characteristic features in 25 subjects practicing the transcendental meditation program (increased β power in prefrontal region, increased θ power in left frontal and right temporal regions, increased α power in both temporal regions, and correlation between increased α power and decreased correlation dimension), 6 subjects with 4 types of spiritual music provided to induce musicogenic states (with significant changes in only 3 cases out of 24, where increased θ and α power was observed in only those subjects who have described their musical experiences as very pleasant), 28 subjects of relaxation induced by microwave resonance therapy applied to corresponding acupuncture points (with slightly decreased EEG power in all frequency bands, especially in the left central region, which can be ascribed to higher activation of the stimulated left circulatory part of the acupuncture system;it should be also noted that persons not previously subjected to this treatment responded stronger, presumably as a consequence of the more imbalanced acupuncture system), 5 healer/healee, noncontact interactions (with increase in the maximum mean coherence of their EEG patterns in the α band observed only in short 4 s time intervals), and 30 subjects for monitoring alertness/drowsiness level (with implemented automatic procedure of the neural network classifier to assess the correlation between EEG power spectrum fluctuations related to changes of vigilance level, demonstrating linear separability of the states of alert wakefulness and drowsy wakefulness, all
