Study on the Analysis and Reduction Method for AC Copper Loss in Electric Vehicle Traction Motor

The advancements in electrified drive systems have enabled the design of high-power density electric vehicle (EV) motors. However, the increased operating frequency necessary for achieving high-power density amplifies AC copper losses, primarily due to skin and proximity effects. This study focuses on reducing AC copper losses in an 8-pole, 48-slot Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) using 2D finite element analysis (FEA). The analysis evaluates the contributions of skin and proximity effects to total copper losses and investigates the influence of slot leakage flux. Additionally, the impact of slot and conductor geometries on leakage flux, its variation over time, and the resulting AC copper losses were systematically analyzed. By balancing manufacturability and performance, optimal design parameters were derived to minimize AC copper losses. The results demonstrate that adjustments in slot width, slot dept., and conductor placement significantly affect leakage flux and copper losses. The proposed design strategies improve motor efficiency and thermal performance under high-speed operating conditions, contributing to the development of high-performance EV motors. This paper proposes design of dv/dt filter for insulation protection in SiC inverter-fed motor drive systems. The SiC inverter is subjected to voltage and current surges. It may cause additional losses in the motor, insulation failure, high bearing current, and electromagnetic interference. To mitigate these problems, a high value of gate resistance is placed at the gate driver;however, it introduces additional switching losses on the devices. In this paper, the filter is injected between the inverter and the motor system. The characteristics of each filter such as rising time, peak voltage, and dv/dt are analyzed to ensure the national electric manufacturers association (NEMA) standard. The proposed design scheme of the dv/dt filter is demonstrated by various experimental results. © 2024 Korean Institute of electrical Engineers. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a robust discrete nonlinear active disturbance rejection controller (NADRC) for precise actuator position control in a highly nonlinear and uncertain pneumatic system. The discrete NADRC features a nonlinear extended state observer (NESO) and a feedback controller, which together estimate and compensate for unknown system dynamics and external disturbances, ensuring robustness. The controller was implemented on a pneumatic actuator in Parker Hannifin’s motion control lab. Experimental tests confirmed its tracking performance and robustness. The stability of the positioning control systems is proved using a Lyapunov method. © 2024 IEEE.

Research has primarily focused on fully automatic instrument-playing robots. However, it is difficult to support the experience of playing musical instruments for people with physical disabilities or those who are inexperienced in playing musical instruments. To address this issue, we studied a "semi-automatic"instrument-playing robot based on human-robot collaboration. Our research specifically focused on the guitar, which are stringed instruments with complex pressed strings. The developed robot enables individuals with physical disabilities and those without musical experience to easily play musical instruments. Additionally, the instruments can be easily removed without causing damage. © 2024 IEEE.

We consider a setting involving N agents, where each agent interacts with an environment modeled as a Markov Decision Process (MDP). The agents' MDPs differ in their reward functions, capturing heterogeneous objectives/tasks. The collective goal of the agents is to communicate intermittently via a central server to find a policy that maximizes the average of long-term cumulative rewards across environments. The limited existing work on this topic either only provide asymptotic rates, or generate biased policies, or fail to establish any benefits of collaboration. In response, we propose Fast-FedPG - a novel federated policy gradient algorithm with a carefully designed bias-correction mechanism. Under a gradient-domination condition, we prove that our algorithm guarantees (i) fast linear convergence with exact gradients, and (ii) sublinear rates that enjoy a linear speedup w.r.t. the number of agents with noisy, truncated policy gradients. Notably, in each case, the convergence is to a globally optimal policy with no heterogeneity-induced bias. In the absence of gradient-domination, we establish convergence to a first-order stationary point at a rate that continues to benefit from collaboration. © 2024 IEEE.

This study explores the application of a Transformer based model to the 'MovieLens 1M' and 'MovieLens 10M' datasets provided by GroupLens, which includes one million and ten movie ratings. The Transformer model, known for its proficiency in handling sequence-to-sequence tasks, employs multi-head self-attention mechanisms and position-wise feed-forward networks. Our implementation, developed in PyTorch, benefits from its capacity for automatic differentiation and GPU acceleration, which significantly enhances the training efficiency. The model underwent rigorous hyperparameter tuning and optimization to adapt optimally to the characteristics of the dataset. Performance evaluation using the Normalized Discounted Cumulative Gain (NDCG) metric demonstrates that the Transformer model substantially outperforms a conventional popular recommendation system across various top-K rankings. Specifically, for the MovieLens 1M dataset, the Transformer model achieved NDCG scores of 0.0455, 0.0805, 0.0995, and 0.1273 at top 1, 3, 5, and 10, respectively. Comparatively, the popular recommendation system scored 0.0023, 0.0044, 0.0061, and 0.0091 at these same rankings. This trend of superior performance by the Transformer model is also consistent across the MovieLens 10M dataset, further confirming its effectiveness in ranking highly relevant items at the top of the list. Also, to address quality and utility of recommendations, MAP, Precision, Recall, F1 Score, Coverage and Serendipity metrics evaluated. These results underscore the effectiveness of Transformer models in extracting and leveraging complex patterns in sequence data, demonstrating a clear superiority over traditional methods in recommendation systems. This study highlights the potential of deep learning architectures to revolutionize fields reliant on understanding user preferences and sequential data interactions. © 2024 IEEE.

The paper introduces an innovative Internet of Things (IoT)-based scale sensor that measures the water level in the alternate wetting and drying (AWD) system and displays data in the mobile app to enable remote monitoring. The AWD system mainly consists of 30 cm of PVC pipe or bamboo with a diameter of 10-15 cm inserted into the paddy field, with a lower 20 cm buried in the soil and tiny holes at the bottom to allow field water to enter. The water level within the pipe indicates the field's water level, especially the underground water level. The AWD method optimizes water usage and reduces methane emissions by watering periodically and drying rice fields instead of maintaining continuous flooding. The current manual measurement process for water level needs to go to crop fields daily with a scale, which is difficult for continuous and remote monitoring. The developed scale sensor has IoT connectivity that removes the difficulties. The scale sensor works based on conductive rain sensors to precisely detect each centimeter rise or fall of water. The sensor consists of two open conductive layers that create a short circuit when the water level touches them by raising, triggering the microcontroller to register a voltage drop. The scale can measure up to 20 cm as it has 20 conductive layers, which fulfill the requirements. It has a 1 cm resolution, and in the test, it shows 95-99% accuracy. So, the sensor can effectively measure the water level in the AWD system, and further research is required to add an automatic irrigation system with the sensor so that the whole process can be controlled remotely. © 2024 IEEE.

This study proposes a convolution-free transformer-based method for generating accurate descriptions of images. A Vision Transformer is utilized as the primary encoder, replacing traditional CNN, and a Meshed Memory Transformer is integrated for generating captions. The Vision Transformer splits images into fixed-size patches for extracting visual features, which are further processed by a memory-augmented encoder to integrate prior knowledge. It ensures key features are preserved and reused and the meshed decoder combines the text embedding with the outputs from each encoding layer to generate more contextually rich and accurate captions compared to conventional approaches. The model's performance is evaluated on the Flickr30K and the MSCOCO datasets, demonstrating that the Meshed Memory architecture in our approach improves both the image encoding and caption generation step. Our model outperforms the conventional 'CNN-LSTM' models and 'CNN-Transformer' methods, achieving a 1.02% improvement in METEOR and 1.31% in SPICE on the MSCOCO dataset. Additionally, on the Flickr30k dataset, our approach exhibits superior performance across most metrics, notably a 6.37% increase in the METEOR score. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents a modular solid state transformer (SST) design incorporating dual active bridge and cascaded H-Bridge topologies to enhance electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. By using modular design concept for the power cell hardware, the proposed SST can be suitable for industrial usage with low manufacturing cost, and low maintenance complexity. With various combinations of the power cells, the whole SST converter has high flexibility for the power scale and circuit topology. This guarantees the fast installation and high transportability of the SST, suitable for the high-demanded EV charging applications. The design detail of the busbar used for the SST has been presented, which shows how to reduce the stray inductance of the busbar while keeping its high current conduction ability and high insulation. To validate the high current conduction ability of the busbar, finite element analysis is conducted to assess busbar current density and temperature. Finally, an advanced control strategy is introduced to effectively reduce DC link ripple, eliminating the need for bulky components. © 2024 IEEE.
