This study evaluates the impact of switching capacitor banks on transient phenomena in power systems. Capacitor banks are often used to improve efficiency through power factor improvement and voltage stabilization, but switching can cause significant current and voltage spikes, called transient phenomena. These phenomena can disrupt electrical devices, degrade power quality, and damage sensitive components. This study analyzes the effects of several capacitor bank configurations, including a capacitor bank with a reactor and a capacitor bank with a solid-state (IGBT), on transient parameters such as current, voltage, duration, and transient frequency. The research methodology combines experimental and simulation approaches, with schematic diagrams illustrating the relationship between capacitor bank switching and transient characteristics concerning system parameters, such as current, voltage, active power, and reactive power. The results show that the standard capacitor bank produces a voltage spike of 289.87 V, a peak current of 43.83 A, a transient duration of 1.66 ms, and a frequency of 602.40 Hz. The addition of a reactor reduces the transient frequency to 100 Hz and the peak current to 8.48 A, but extends the transient duration to 10 ms. In contrast, solid-state (IGBT) shortens the transient duration to 1.25 ms at a frequency of 800 Hz. This study recommends configurations to minimize the negative impact of transients, thereby improving power system stability. © 2024 IEEE.

Distributed detection (DD) plays a crucial role in sensor networks, where sensors gather data from a region of interest and report their observations to a fusion center (FC). The FC then makes a decision regarding a specific task, such as determining the presence or absence of a target. Given the constraints imposed by the transmission power, bandwidth, and noise impact in both sensing and data reporting channels, what should be reported from the sensors significantly affects the final detection accuracy. Existing methods include observation-untransformed DD (UDD), codewords-based DD (CDD), and quantized-but-uncoded DD (QDD). In this paper, we attempt to find the optimal sensor decision rule, i.e., the best transform for the observed data to be reported, by formulating the task as a functional optimization problem. To bypass the difficulty of theoretically solving the problem, we present two methods: an approximation function and a numerical solution for the Gaussian noise case. Our simulation results demonstrate that a variation of the hyperbolic tangent function can be an effective approximation of the optimal transform. This work could lead to further studies on the optimal design for distributed detection. © 2025 IEEE.

The nature of HF radio wave propagation through the lower ionosphere has significant impact on scientific efforts such as ELF/VLF wave generation and ionospheric sounding, as well as operational efforts e.g. over-the-horizon radar and satellite-to-ground communications. Historical interpretation of propagation within the lower ionosphere centers on D-region absorption models, but observations of polar mesospheric echoes in HF and VHF radars and anomalous absorption in HF cross-modulation experiments highlight the potential for other interactions to impact HF radio wave propagation in the lower ionosphere. © 2025 USNC-URSI.

Robust Tracking Control of 6 DOF Manipulator using Artificial Neural Network based Integral Sliding Mode Control

This paper proposes a robust tracking control method for a six degree-of-freedom manipulator using artificial neural network based integral sliding mode control. The proposed method is designed to consider all of the actual manipulator's weight, length, and moment of inertia, while maintaining the robustness against the disturbance and the uncertainty of the system model. The trajectory tracking error can be effectively reduced by using the proposed method even in this situation. Both the simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the validity of the proposed method. © 2022 Korean Institute of electrical Engineers. All rights reserved.

Robust Image Based Visual Servoing of Omnidirectional Mobile Manipulator

This paper proposes robust image based visual servoing of an omnidirectional mobile manipulator using integral sliding mode control to compensate for the uncertainty that may occur while performing the image-based visual servoing. The stability of the overall omnidirecitonal mobile manipulator system using the proposed method is proven by the Lyapunov stability analysis by showing that the error stays on the sliding surface always and asymptotically converges to zero. In order to solve the singularity problem that can occur when controlling the omnidirectional mobile robot and the manipulator at the same time, a switching technique is proposed in such a way that the omnidirectional mobile robot and manipulator operate sequentially to prevent the abnormal operation of the manipulator and solve the singularity problem. The validity of the proposed robust image based visual servoing method is verified through simulation results. © 2022 Korean Institute of electrical Engineers. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we identify the electric power problem of the high-speed underwater discharge in a small autonomous underwater vehicle(AUV) and propose a circuit design method to protect it. High-speed underwater discharge of an AUV arouse propeller rotates due to the water flow. Excessive initial propeller rotation generates a back EMF of the motor and causes a voltage increase at the DC terminal of the inverter. To figure out this problem, a simulation was performed to limit the back EMF in a simplified environment. Then, a simulation-based controller protection circuit was proposed. Finally, the validity of the proposed simulation and the superiority of the protection circuit were confirmed through the actual underwater discharge test. We develop a framework for incorporating Bayesian transfer learning into an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) to track a nonlinear dynamic motion model in a multi-source system consisting of two or more sensors. This framework extends a previous UKF-based transfer learning scheme for object tracking in a two-sensor system. Our objective is to extend the application of transfer learning to leverage knowledge gained from several source sensors. To achieve this aim, we generalize the transfer learning approach to online multi-source Bayesian transfer learning. The extended framework is approximated via a UKF, where the predicted observation densities of one or more sources are transferred to a primary sensor experiencing higher measurement noise intensity. By leveraging knowledge from multiple sources instead of a single source, the tracking performance of the primary sensor is able to achieve a higher level of estimation accuracy. The performance gain increases proportionally with the number of source sensors. Our numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of multi-source Bayesian transfer learning in improving tracking accuracy. © 2025 IEEE.

We present a hybrid deep neural network model for Denoising task-based fMRI data. This model is based on the Deep Neural Network (DNN) model [1] and improves its performance by utilizing different layers for Grey Matter and non-Grey Matter related data. The preprocessed data passes through GM and non-GM masks. Then it is fed to the network and passes through temporal filters along with an LSTM layer. The result will be classified using time-distributed fully-connected layers -since the input data is a time-series of voxel values-which have different structures for GM and non-GM input data. This hybrid mechanism helps the model to reduce the correlation between non-GM processed data and the design matrix significantly. We also increase the correlation of GM output, which is equivalent to better cost function and less noise. This new self-supervised model is tested using simulated data and the HCP database [2]. We succeed in denoising task better than the DNN model by an average of at least 4%. © 2023 IEEE.

Content personalization on social platforms has been linked to the creation of filter bubbles. The algorithms provide content recommendations based on the user’s browsing history and interests, which limits content diversity. Studies have been conducted on platforms such as Facebook and YouTube to investigate user awareness and strategies to exit filter bubbles. However, no study has employed a multi-platform, user-centered perspective in investigating filter bubble exit through change in search content, as well as the duration of the content transition across multiple platforms. This study examines the duration of user exit of filter bubbles, across three social platforms;TikTok, YouTube Shots, and Instagram Reels, as well as the impact of word similarity on the duration of the transition between contents, across the platforms. The methodology applied involved triggering the filter bubble effect through user interactions with the search content across the different platforms. Findings revealed that the mean time of a transition between search terms on TikTok is significantly higher than the mean time on Instagram reels, and YouTube shorts. Similarly, the study identified differences in the duration of transition across the different platforms, due to the similarity of the search terms. Apart from improving user awareness of a filter bubble exit strategy, this study contributes to Human-computer Interaction research by highlighting some design implications for future social media application design. © 2024 IEEE.
