Neuromuscular Disorders (NMDs) are a group of conditions that affect nerves and muscles leading to muscle weakness, atrophy, and sometimes paralysis. The effects of these conditions cannot be reversed, causing permanent impairment if not diagnosed timely. Recent medical advancements have led to timely detection and successful prevention of many diseases with portable healthcare solutions backed by strong machine learning algorithms. A similar approach for NMDs can be designed using non-invasive Surface Electromyography (sEMG) signals. While machine learning approaches have been developed for detecting NMDs, generalized features and a lack of comprehensive datasets prevent the evaluation of the robustness of these methods. Thus, a systematic methodology that incorporates features representing NMD biomarkers and one-class support vector machine for unsupervised detection of neuromuscular disorders is proposed. The method is implemented on electromyography analysis of Human Activity - Database 1 (EMAHA DB-1) which is a comprehensive dataset for hand gesture recognition based on Indian population. For robust evaluation of the algorithm, functions are designed to simulate anomalies based on NMD bio-signals' knowledge by generating an augmented dataset that mimics the nature of NMDs. Multiple machine learning models are implemented and evaluated on the real healthy dataset as well as simulated NMDs dataset. One-class SVM emerged successful amongst other models with an accuracy of 81.45%, averaged over separately trained models for each limb action. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes a computation-efficient semi-supervised machine learning model for the near-to-real-time state of health estimation for a Milling tool. To secure high reliability of the health state estimation, we have adopted the two-stage classification Beta Variational Auto-Encoder (β-VAE) architecture. The computation efficiency is achieved through the correlation between the latent space and input space classification processes of β-VAE for healthy states, where the input space decoder classification is triggered only when the latent space classifies the state to be unhealthy. This can be seen as a double-check process due to the high cost related to processing the false-positive maintenance decisions. We have implemented the proposed model and tested it on the UC Berkeley milling data set. The experiment results show that our state of health estimation model can reduce the computation cost by up to 15% while achieving high classification accuracy. © 2024 IEEE.

In recent years, the process humans adopt to learn a foreign language has moved from the strict "Grammar -Translation"method, which is based mainly on grammar and syntax rules, to more innovative processes, resulting to the more modern "Communicative approach". As its name states, this approach focuses on the coherent communication with native speakers and the cultivation of oral skills, without taking into consideration, at least at the first stages, the rules that govern the language. The same trend seems to have been applied to the way machinery can be "educated"to comprehend and reproduce the unfamiliar, human language. The "rule based"Natural Language Generation (NLG) and Natural Language Understanding (NLU) algorithms, on one hand, and the "text based"Large Language Models (LLMs), on the other, are two, analogous to the two human foreign language learning processes, subareas of Natural Language Processing (NLP). This paper presents these two alternative approaches, LLMs (a technology having surfaced as an influential catalyst of NLP, during last years) on the one hand and NLG/NLU on the other, highlighting their applications, their technologies, their capabilities, their differences, their strengths and weaknesses and the challenges they present, contributing to a deeper comprehension of the evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence and human-computer communication. © 2023 Owner/Author.

The Single-Ended Primary-Inductor Converter (SEPIC) is one type of DC-DC converter that has been widely utilized. In certain conditions, this DC-DC converter may exhibit inappropriate behavior regarding stability and reliability, thus requiring a controller to ensure that the voltage, current, or power values they produce align with the desired one. In this research, we examine and simulate the performance of the SEPIC converter using a Proportional Integral (PI) controller and compare the use of tuning methods: Ziegler-Nichols (ZN), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Fuzzy Logic in regulating the PI control parameters. Simulations will be performed through MATLAB. From the simulation results, it is observed that the PI tuning methods using GA, PSO, and Fuzzy Logic are superior to the ZN method, and with the advantage of adaptive process for PI tuning, the fuzzy logic method outperforms in terms of convenience to the other three methods. © 2024 IEEE.

A novel embedded controller is proposed for the management of electrical consumption in residential installations. The proposed system is designed to implement well-established DSM techniques. It can be placed directly into the electrical board of a residential circuit and can be connected to the smart grid. The controller is based on a PIC microcontroller and incorporates a series of perceptrons which adjust the duty cycle of PWM modules according to user defined preferences. The system is tested in laboratory conditions and is proved to be able to adjust the total current to a predefined threshold, without violating user comfort and priorities. The proposed embedded controller is a flexible solution in the form of a final product, ready for the smart grid and able to support microgrids. © 2024 IEEE.

The requirements for university graduation were changed by the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology in August 2023, where a thesis is no longer required and can be replaced with another form. The existence of this regulation has caused discussion in the community with various responses visible through social media Instagram. Instagram has become a forum for sharing the latest topics for the public, causing the emergence of online media accounts such as Folkative. This research aims to analyze sentiment regarding the policy of eliminating thesis obligations at universities through data collected from comments on Folkative's Instagram account posts. Sentiment analysis was carried out using Logistic Regression for classification, K-Fold Cross Validation for data validation, Confusion Matrix for evaluation, and ADASYN to resolve data imbalances. The data collected from the scraping process was 4,172 comments. After carrying out the classification and performance evaluation process, the best method produced was a combination of Logistic Regression and ADASYN achieving results of 89.6% accuracy, 91.5% precision, 87.7% recall, and f-1 score 89.5%. This shows that the performance of the Logistic Regression method is good and suitable for use as a classification model in this research. © 2024 IEEE.

In recent years, X-ray photon-counting detectors (PCDs) have become increasingly popular due to their ability to discriminate energy and low noise levels. However, technical issues (e.g., charge splitting and pulse pileup effects) can affect the data quality by distorting the energy spectrum. To address those issues, based on a deep neural network-based approach using a Wasserstein generative adversarial network (WGAN) framework for PCD data correction, we evaluate the effectiveness of pre-trained and training-from-scratch convolutional neural networks (CNNs) as perceptual loss functions to address charge splitting and pulse pileup correction challenges in photon counting computed tomography (CT) data. Different CNN architectures, including VGG11, VGG13, VGG16, VGG19, ResNet50, and Xception, are evaluated. Compared with the method using a pre-trained network, our findings indicate that training the CNNs from scratch on our dataset produces better results. It significantly affects the performance for the choice of CNN architecture as a perceptual loss in the WGAN framework. Furthermore, because recent explosive interest on transformers has suggested their potential to be useful for computer vision tasks, we also evaluate transformers to maximize the attribute-related information contained in the image feature by texture features extraction. Our study emphasizes the importance of selecting appropriate network architecture and training strategy when implementing the WGAN framework for photon counting CT data correction. © 2024 SPIE.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association estimates that approximately 40% of Americans will suffer some sort of balance issue in their lifetime, resulting in impaired mobility or constant disorientation. In order to provide personalized physical therapy for patients, and help physical therapy physicians better understand the areas of the foot that may lead to issues with imbalance, the proposed balance board is designed to mechanically move to very specific angles in one axis at a high enough speed to break the balance of the user on the board. The shift in pressure distribution in the user's feet can then be tracked throughout the balance recovery period through pressure mats. This design can allow researchers and physicians to better target the areas in the foot that may be damaged and the cause of balance issues. The proposed system is portable, easy to use by patients and researchers, and low cost, all without sacrificing the quality of the data being collected. In order to help researchers and physical therapy physicians better understand the areas of the foot that may lead to issues with imbalance, the proposed balance board is designed to mechanically move to very specific angles in one axis at a high enough speed to break the balance of the user on the board. The shift in pressure distribution in the user's feet will then be tracked throughout the balance recovery period through pressure mats. This design can allow researchers and physicians to better target the areas in the foot that may be damaged and the cause of balance issues, and further can be expanded to various intervention therapy such as nerve stimulation, sensory augmentation, etc. © 2024 IEEE.

Vital signs, such as heart and respiratory rates, are the main parameters when assessing a person's physical condition. Advanced technologies for monitoring vital signs include electrocardiography (ECG), photoplethysmograph (PPG), or phonocardiography (PCG). While ECG utilizes electrical stimulation that triggers each heartbeat, PPG measures changes in absorbance caused by blood flow, and PCG measures acoustic waves resulting from the mechanical activity of the heart. In recent decades, analysis of heart sound signals, especially for automatic heart sound segmentation and classification, has been widely studied and reported to have potential value for accurately and clinically detecting pathology. However, comparative analysis of algorithms in the literature has been hindered by the lack of high-quality, rigorously validated, and standardized heart sound databases of recordings. In this research, a heart sound database will be created by the public, especially Indonesians, to represent the condition of Asian society, which in the future can be used as a research reference for other researchers as an open data set. It includes healthy subjects and patients with a variety of conditions, including heart valve disease and coronary artery disease. Records are collected from a variety of clinical or nonclinical environments and equipment. Recording length varies from a few seconds to several seconds-minutes. This study will report detailed information about subjects/patients including demographics (number, age, and gender), recordings (number, location, state, and length of time), associated synchronously recorded signals, sampling frequency, and type of sensor used. This research aims to measure acoustic waves resulting from the mechanical activity of the heart and the results of heart sound recordings in various patient conditions, along with their pathologies, will be grouped in an open database based on normal and abnormal.
