The measurement of the dynamic parameters of vehicle motion is usually carried out by measuring the velocity of motion, accelerations and angular velocities in all three axes. For research applications, e.g. the DAS-3 with microwave velocity sensor from Corrsys Datron GmbH (now part of the Kistler Group) and the PicDaq5 from Dr. Steffan Datentechnik GmbH are used for this purpose. If the movement of the vehicle also needs to be documented by video, these three measuring devices need to be synchronized in time, e.g. by light pulses for the video and electrical pulses for the speed and acceleration meters. This paper describes the technical solution of the synchronization device, triggered manually during driving tests or by a ribbon switch in the case of measurements during crash tests. © 2024 IEEE.

This research covers the implementation of SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) with Ouster OS0 LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensor in the Robot Operating System (ROS1) Noetic. Using the high-frequency capabilities of the ouster, this method works towards mapping and localization in structured and unstructured environments. The paper explains the Ouster sensor integration in the ROS1 Noetic environment, providing information on the sensor calibration, data acquisition, and pre-processing. The ROS ecosystem in Ubuntu 20.04 is set to process the data streams coming from the ouster LiDAR sensor which is further utilised to create map and localize the robot. The Ouster LiDAR sensor scans every object in its field of view (in 3D), the data is then used for the SLAM. SLAM is executed using the Direct Lidar Odometry (DLO) algorithm for mapping and simultaneously helping the robot with localization and enabling it to navigate through the environment smoothly and precisely. © 2024 IEEE.

Power electronics dominated grid (PEDG) consisting of multiple inter-connected distributed generation (DG) units are getting more popular because of their benefits in reducing the stress on main transmission lines, limiting line losses, and improving the efficiency and stability of the power system. Often a PEDG is comprised of several energy sources such as solar, wind, and energy storage devices. For that reason, optimal power sharing between all the sources is crucial to enhance the reliability and resiliency of the network. Hence, this paper provides comprehensive insights into the operation and working principles, limitations, and challenges of the power-sharing schemes employed in PEDG. More specifically, control laws of the droop, virtual synchronous generator (VSG), and Lienard and Consensus-based oscillators are briefly overviewed. In addition, the inherent drawbacks and challenges of existing power-sharing schemes are explained for inductive, resistive, and complex line impedances. Moreover, their performance under dynamic variations of the source availability, inverter power reserve, line losses, and generation costs are discussed in detail. © 2024 IEEE.

The increase in the penetration of renewable energy sources makes the future grid more vulnerable to frequency and voltage fluctuations. Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations can be used as a source of energy to support the grids’ voltage and frequency during load or generation disturbances. However, managing the contribution of each EV in the total energy injected into the grid, considering each EV capacity while maintaining minimal losses, is challenging. This paper presents an algorithm to distribute the total injected energy among the EVs based on their state of charge, which determines the optimal power injected by each EV inside the parking lot. Furthermore, the design procedure of the CLLC converter for the EV charging stations is elaborated to meet the requirements of each converter and DC charging station for grid integration. The control of the CLLC converter for both grid-to-vehicle (G2V) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) conditions is described. The simulation results for different scenarios for EV arrival and departure show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in minimizing the loss according to the SOC. © 2024 IEEE.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with full-duplex relays (FDRs) are pivotal in overcoming connectivity challenges by dynamically establishing effective communication channels. However, despite their potential in network performance via trajectory optimization, integrating energy consumption models for UAV-mounted FDRs remains unexplored, crucial for trajectory design adhering to existing energy constraints. To this end, we introduce an energy-aware trajectory optimization framework to maximize network performance and user fairness within the UAV's energy constraints. Specifically, we present a detailed energy consumption model describing the operational needs of UAV-mounted FDRs and formulate a joint time-division multiple access (TDMA) user scheduling-UAV trajectory optimization problem considering the power dynamics of UAV-mounted FDRs. Finally, our simulation results highlight the role of energy awareness in achieving optimal trajectory and scheduling, contributing to UAV-mounted FDRs' performance in future networks. © 2024 IEEE.

Mobile edge computing (MEC) is a new paradigm that improves the quality of service compared with traditional cloud computing. In MEC, computational tasks are submitted by numerous end users and are partially offloaded to edge servers or a central cloud. However, the characteristics of tasks are different from each other, and the limited resources of computational nodes are also heterogeneous, which brings great challenges to computation offloading and resource allocation for MEC. This work establishes an end-edge-cloud collaborative computing network, which consists of end devices, edge servers, and a central cloud. Task execution location and CPU running frequency determine the execution time and energy consumption to finish the tasks. Considering the aforementioned factors, a multi-objective constrained optimization problem is formulated. To solve the problem, an improved Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) with self-adaptive crossover and mutation rates is proposed, which is called Improved NSGA-II with _Self-adaptive Crossover and Mutation (INSCM). The total execution time and energy consumption can be jointly minimized with our proposed INSCM. Numerous experiments are carried out to test the performance of INSCM. Simulation results show that INSCM effectively improves the performance of NSGA-II and surpasses random offloading and NSGA-III, which shows practical use in real-life scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.

Learning by demonstration (LbD) through visual observation is widely used in literature for tackling the problem of robot programming. However, identification and exact localization of the point of interest (e.g. human hand) during the demonstration, in most of the cases, comes with a non-negligible uncertainty, introduced by the detection algorithm and the sensor characteristics. In this work, we propose an active perception framework for gaining the maximum information during iterative demonstrations performed by a human, towards LbD. The method considers an in-hand camera and it is based on a covariance weighted pseudo-inverse estimator that accounts for the non-homogeneous uncertainty of the sensor. The proposed framework, coined as 'ActIVO', is experimentally validated in two scenarios, utilizing a UR5e robotic manipulator and an in-hand RealSense RGB-D camera. © 2024 IEEE.

True autonomy of artificial agents is a self-evident goal of AI research, yet to be achieved. While various aspects impact autonomy, adaptability is key both structurally and cognitively. This latter characteristic is largely affected by emotion in living beings, on which it links environmental appraisal with behavioral versatility. Taking advantage of this bio-inspiration, similar correlations can be achieved in artificial intelligence by replicating the conditions under which they are promoted in real life, and later exploited for furthering agent adaptability in terms of learning and behavior. Such agents would certainly boast greater autonomy and all the benefits it entails. As a demonstration, this work presents a task-agnostic agent which learned to associate exploration with the emotion of surprise, based on previous analytic experiences, and employs this knowledge for adaptive broadening of its familiarity with user facial features in real-time. This functionality reiterates the usability of emotion as a learning/behavioral metaparameter and also the importance of considering biological traits when designing artificial agents. © 2023 IEEE.

An artificial neural network (ANN) inspired cooperative hierarchical control scheme for frequency restoration during sudden source/load variations in a network of grid-forming and grid-following inverter-based resources (IBRs) is proposed. The photovoltaic (PV) sources' regulated power harvesting ability is leveraged for immediate frequency support in response to potential disturbances. The ANN-inspired supervisory controller (SC) estimates the demanded power (ΔP) to regulate the frequency which is then optimally distributed amongst all PV interfaced IBRs by a Power Allocator (PA) module;located in the secondary layer cluster coordinator (CC). The PA module ensures that the interfaced PV's generation limits are not violated while also minimizing system losses. Detailed description of each module in the cluster along with their technical specifications are provided. Finally, simulation results that justify the feasibility and robustness of the proposed control scheme to restore the grid frequency in a timely manner are discussed. © 2023 IEEE.

Decomposing a complex system into smaller abstract functional blocks and developing mathematical models to represent their behavior is an important activity towards developing comprehensive system understanding. In this paper, we decompose the ideal Quantum Teleportation protocol into a collection of simple quantum circuit blocks, examine the behavior of each block, and show how collections of blocks operate to create more complex circuits. We believe this approach greatly simplifies the understanding of how the Quantum Teleportation protocol works. This paper is introductory in nature and is intended to help those who are new to modeling, simulating, and analyzing ideal quantum circuits. © 2023 IEEE.
