Estimating the volcanic eruption scale is important for mitigating eruption hazards. While the eruption scale can be explained by the eruption mode and its temporal variation, the dominant factor is expected to be the formation reaction of volcanic products, but there are still many unknowns, including the relationship with the thermal history. To solve this problem, we proposed a broadband circularly polarized microwave antenna for a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensor that is suitable for in situ observation of volcanic materials such as lava. As a result of fabricating the proposed antenna, the antenna characteristics were almost the same as the simulation one, with a center frequency of 5.394 GHz, IBW=32.6%, ARBW=23.7%, and Gain=12.0dBic. The measurement results indicate that the proposed antenna has loss and radiation characteristics suitable for the purpose.

In this paper, we propose an ansatz approximation approach for variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) that uses one of the hardware's main attributes, its crosstalk behavior, as its main approximation driver. By utilizing crosstalk-adaptive scheduling, we are able to apply a circuit-level approximation/optimization to our ansatz. Our design procedure involves first characterizing the hardware's crosstalk and then approximating the circuit by a desired level of crosstalk mitigation, all while effectively reducing its duration and gate counts. We demonstrate the effect of crosstalk mitigation on expressibility, trainability, and entanglement: key components that drive the utility of parameterized circuits. We tested our approach on real quantum hardware against a base configuration, and our results showed superior performance for the circuit-level optimized ansatz over a base ansatz for two quantum chemistry benchmarks. We take into consideration that applications vary in their response to crosstalk, and we believe that this approximation strategy can be used to create ansatze that are expressive, trainable, and with crosstalk mitigation levels tailored for specific workloads.

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) deployed to the real world are regularly subject to out-of-distribution (OoD) data, various types of noise, and shifting conceptual objectives. This paper proposes a framework for adapting to data distribution drift modeled by benchmark Continual Learning datasets. We develop and evaluate a method of Continual Learning that leverages uncertainty quantification from Bayesian Inference to mitigate catastrophic forgetting. We expand on previous approaches by removing the need for Monte Carlo sampling of the model weights to sample the predictive distribution. We optimize a closed-form Evidence Lower Bound (ELBO) objective approximating the predictive distribution by propagating the first two moments of a distribution, i.e. mean and covariance, through all network layers. Catastrophic forgetting is mitigated by using the closed-form ELBO to approximate the Minimum Description Length (MDL) Principle, inherently penalizing changes in the model likelihood by minimizing the KL Divergence between the variational posterior for the current task and the previous task’s variational posterior acting as the prior. Leveraging the approximation of the MDL principle, we aim to initially learn a sparse variational posterior and then minimize additional model complexity learned for subsequent tasks. Our approach is evaluated for the task incremental learning scenario using density propagated versions of fully-connected and convolutional neural networks across multiple sequential benchmark datasets with varying task sequence lengths. Ultimately, this procedure produces a minimally complex network over a series of tasks mitigating catastrophic forgetting. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A coding scheme with scalar lattices is applied to K-receiver, Gaussian, vector broadcast channels with K independent messages, one for each receiver. The method decomposes each receiver channel into parallel scalar channels with known interference and applies dirty paper coding with a modulo interval, amplitude shift keying (ASK), and probabilistic shaping to each scalar channel. The achievable rate tuples include all points inside the capacity region by choosing truncated Gaussian shaping, large ASK alphabets, and large modulo intervals. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. This paper presents the design and analysis of composite right left hand (CRLH) electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure. The proposed unit cell is consistent of a dielectric substrate with dimensions of 5×5×1 mm3 made of FR4-Epoxy with ϵr = 4.4 underneath of a conductive patch with dimensions of 4.4×4.4mm2. The unit cell is structured to perform a negative permittivity (ϵ) and negative permeability (μ) in different bands. The proposed unit cell is developed to 5G systems in the sub-6GHz bands. In this work, a complete analysis of the unit cell in terms of Sparameters, constitutive parameters and refraction index are evaluated using HFSS simulation package based on Finite Element Method (FEM). © 2022 Institute of Advanced engineering and Science (IAES).

Fan-Out Wafer-Level-Packaging (FOWLP) to PCB transition enables the scaling of an antenna element into an array at a PCB level. This paper presents key design steps ensuring the FOWLP package-to-board transition structure's performance. The back-to-back package-to-board transition structure has a maximum simulated insertion loss of 0.88 dB and a minimum return loss of 11.73 dB over 20 to 35 GHz. A prototype was also fabricated for further characterization.

This paper develops a cost-effective and accurate procedure for parasitic capacitance extraction for three-level neutral-point-clamped (3L-NPC) inverter modules. Compared to traditional methods, which require full system measurements or open-module configuration to obtain the module parasitic capacitances, this paper simply estimate the parasitic capacitances from the ringing frequency of the common mode (CM) current in the proposed extended double pulse test (eDPT) setup. The proposed analytical method has been verified and compared with the traditional open-module measurement results. The extracted parasitic capacitances have also been used in the CM electromagnetic interference (EMI) model and show good accuracy in predicting the CM noise spectrum compared to the experimental results from a three-phase inverter-filter test bed.

The conventional feedforward broadband active noise control (ANC, BANC, FFBANC) generates 'firework noise' if it is set to converge fast and its reference signal contains both a broadband and a low-frequency sinusoidal component. The feedforward hybrid ANC (FFHANC) converges fast without producing any firework noise in the presence of such a reference signal. In this paper, statistical convergence analysis is conducted for the original FFHANC system. Difference equations are derived for the mean errors of the sinusoidal noise canceller (SNC) coefficients, the FFBANC and feedforward narrowband ANC (FFNANC) subcontroller filter weights. The mean residual error expression is also derived for the FFHANC system. Extensive simulations are performed to verify the validity of the analytical results. © 2023 IEEE.

In the healthcare context, remote monitoring based on the Internet of Things (IoT) technology is a widespread application. Underlying entities are interacting to bring up various services, so that their communication has to be ensured without defects such as deadlocks. The correct validation of these IoT applications is a major concern because of their distributed and concurrent features, as well as, the safety-critical nature of the health context. In this paper, we show how we use a model checking approach to accurately validate the behavior of an IoT-based healthcare application. We then focus on verifying three important classes of properties namely safety, liveness, and absence of deadlock. The verification is guaranteed by means of the UPPAAL model checker.

Community Microgrids are increasingly gaining popularity worldwide for their efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and local resilience improvement. Microgrid planning tools play a crucial role in their deployment. In the process, tentative designs of the microgrid are simulated, analyzed, and optimized. Due to the complexity of the problem, planning tools must carefully balance computational efficiency while seeking the most optimal solutions. This paper investigates the impact of algorithm selection on CPU and memory utilization of a Community Microgrid planning tool that is specifically designed for non-technical users. We compare two version of the code with two alternatives for Community Microgrid planning tools: a Greedy Algorithm, and a Linear Programming Approach. This comparison examines scenarios spanning from 2 to 50 buildings. Our findings revealed a significant difference in performance between the two algorithms, underscoring the critical role of algorithm selection in optimizing the efficiency of Community Microgrid Planning Tools.
