This paper introduce a new approach for implementation of soft computing methodology of fuzzy cognitive map to control the parameters of Direct Expansion (DX) air-conditioning (A/C) systems. In the past few decades, the application of different controllers on heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system and also air conditioning system separately are considered due to a high demand of these appliances in the buildings and high energy consumption in the building automation system. Designing the suitable fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) controller on air conditioning system could increase more energy efficiency and also more energy saving in building automation system. The simple FCM control algorithm by using generalized predictive control (GPC) for assigning the weights could obtain to the goals of comfort and energy saving by considering the real characteristics of air conditioning system. Therefore, the FCM control method could be considered as an efficient strategy to multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) and nonlinear system with strong cross coupling effect between the parameters of the system. It is observe from simulation results that thermal comfort achieved and energy efficiency obtained by eliminating the humidifier in tropical countries. © 2015 IEEE.

Data deduplication has become a standard component in modern backup systems. In order to understand the fundamental tradeoffs in each of its design choices (such as prefetching and sampling), we disassemble data deduplication into a large N-dimensional parameter space. Each point in the space is of various parameter settings, and performs a tradeoff among backup and restore performance, memory footprint, and storage cost. Existing and potential solutions can be considered as specific points in the space. Then, we propose a general-purpose framework to evaluate various deduplication solutions in the space. Given that no single solution is perfect in all metrics, our goal is to find some reasonable solutions that have sustained backup performance and perform a suitable tradeoff between deduplication ratio, memory footprints, and restore performance. Our findings from extensive experiments using real-world workloads provide a detailed guide to make efficient design decisions according to the desired tradeoff.

A U-shape MoS 2 pMOSFET with 10nm channel and poly-Si source/drain is demonstrated. The fabrication process is simple. Because the Si S/D serves as the nucleation seed for CVD MoS 2 deposition, thin MoS 2 is well deposited in the channel region any where over the fully scale oxide coated Si wafer. This is a big step forward toward a low cost multi-layer stacked TMD IC technology.

This paper investigates the efficiency and performance of three permanent magnet (PM) machines with different topologies when all three use the same ferrite magnet material and are optimized to meet the same set of automotive traction specifications with a minimum total active mass. The three machine topologies are an interior PM (IPM) machine, a conventional flux-switching PM (FSPM) machine, and a PM-sandwiched FSPM machine. The three machines are compared using a number of criteria including total active mass, component material mass values, and several geometric parameters. Both FSPM machine types exhibit significant efficiency benefits compared to the IPM machine, but the magnet content of these two machines is also much higher. The ramifications of these efficiency and magnet content tradeoffs are explored as they apply to an electric vehicle application. Experimental results from a demonstrator PM-sandwiched FSPM exhibit good agreement with predicted results when three-dimensional finite element analysis is used to properly incorporate axial leakage flux at the two ends of the FSPM machine core. © 2015 IEEE.

The AC side Single Line to Ground (SLG) fault is one of the most frequent faults in power systems. And, in an HVDC system based on modular multilevel converter it calls for the fault ride through strategy to transmit maximum possible electricity during the fault to secure power system stability. It presents different characteristics of SLG faults at the voltage regulator side and the power dispatcher side. In this paper a comprehensive fault ride through strategy for AC side SLG fault occurred at both converters of the HVDC system is proposed. The proposed method presents fast dynamics and promises maximum possible electricity transmission during the faults. Voltage fluctuation and current overshoot in transmission line during SLG fault can be fully suppressed by the proposed method. Moreover, the proposed control strategy is free of inter-station communication and secures the reliability of HVDC transmission system. Validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation of a ±200kV, 400MW point-to-point HVDC system (216 sub-modules per arm). © 2015 IEEE.

AlGaN/GaN power HEMT combined with partial AlGaN barrier recess and multiple CHF_3 based fluorine plasma treatments onto ALD deposited Al_2O_3 gate dielectrics is able to bring a high gate threshold voltage (V_(TH)) for the enhancement mode operations without much degradation on the maximum drain saturation current (I_(DMAX)). This work reports integration of both the enhancement and depletion (E-D) modes AlGaN/GaN MIS-HEMTs to construct a monolithic inverter. Experimental data show that the proposed power inverter provides large noise margin allowances of 4.9V and 3.2V, large output swing of 9.66V and satisfactory propagation switching delay time of 35ns. The configuration is found to be suitable for GaN power integrated circuits.

The inherent crystal anisotropy of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) sustains naturally hyperbolic phonon polaritons, i.e. polaritons that can propagate with very large wavevectors within the material volume, thereby enabling optical confinement to exceedingly small dimensions. Indeed, previous research has shown that nanometer-scale truncated nanocone hBN cavities, with deep subwavelength dimensions, support three-dimensionally confined optical modes in the mid-infrared. Due to optical selection rules, only a few of many such modes predicted theoretically have been observed experimentally via far-field reflection and scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy. The Photothermal induced resonance (PTIR) technique probes optical and vibrational resonances overcoming weak far-field emission by leveraging an atomic force microscope (AFM) probe to transduce local sample expansion due to light absorption. Here we show that PTIR enables the direct observation of previously unobserved, dark hyperbolic modes of hBN nanostructures. Leveraging these optical modes could yield a new degree of control over the electromagnetic near-field concentration, polarization and angular momentum in nanophotonic applications. We propose the propagation filter as a novel image filtering operator, with the goal of smoothing over neighboring image pixels while preserving image context like edges or textural regions. In particular, our filter does not to utilize explicit spatial kernel functions as bilateral and guided filters do. We will show that our propagation filter can be viewed as a robust estimator, which minimizes the expected difference between the filtered and desirable image outputs. We will also relate propagation filtering to belief propagation, and suggest techniques if further speedup of the filtering process is necessary. In our experiments, we apply our propagation filter to a variety of applications such as image denoising, smoothing, fusion, and high-dynamic-range (HDR) compression. We will show that improved performance over existing image filters can be achieved.

Emerging Camera Sensor Networks (CSN) leverage the collaboration, processing and communication capabilities of modern cameras to handle a wide variety of security and safety-critical tasks, including target tracking. However, the performance of CSN in terms of tracking accuracy can be severely degraded when faults occur. Faults may be caused by unpredictable software errors (e.g., in the image processing, feature extraction and data association modules), hardware malfunctions (e.g., in the camera mechanical parts or lens), or as the result of a malicious attack. We propose a decentralized CSN-based system for tracking multiple targets that mitigates the effect of faulty cameras. According to our findings, the proposed solution can well handle faulty camera observations and is able to reliably track a number of targets that may change over time.

Two-dimensional (2D) atomic sheets yield collective properties of mechanical flexibility, electrical control, optical transparency and high surface-to-volume ratio, which hold promise for advanced flexible nanoelectronics and sensors. This work explores two newly emerging 2D materials, silicene and phosphorene (the Si and P equivalent to graphene) and their airstability and device study. The debut of silicene transistor confirms ambipolar transport behavior in atomically thin Si with greater gate modulation than graphene, indicating potential device reach beyond graphene. On the other hand, phosphorene exhibits high mobility and tunable direct bandgap even on plastic substrates, making it the most suitable contemporary 2D semiconductor that combines the merits of graphene and transitional metal dichalcogenides. This recent progress on silicene and phosphorene represent a renewed opportunity for future nanoscale and flexible devices.
