Adversarial machine learning (ML) attacks are stealthy attacks designed to mislead the ML model results. This paper explores adversarial ML attacks that generate adversarial noisy input data in an ML-based controller in a solar inverter. Three types of ML models, long short-term memory (LSTM), gated recurrent unit (GRU)), and bidirectional-LSTM (Bi-LSTM), are designed to replace proportional-integral (PI) controller-based vector control for a solar inverter and two white-box adversarial ML attacks (Basic Iterative Method (BIM) attack and Fast Sign-Gradient Method (FGSM)) are applied to the ML controllers. It is observed that the adversary ML attacks designed in stealthy way do not affect the PI controller, while significantly degrading performance of the ML-based controllers. Moreover, the BIM attack is more effective than FGSM and Bi-LSTM-based controller is relatively robust to the attacks compared to peer. © 2024 IEEE.

Safety Assessment for Rooftop Wind Turbines Using Fuzzy-AHP

Recently, wind power as a renewable energy resource has been widely used throughout the world, and the range of structure types, including small and rooftop wind turbines, has expanded. Consequently, the demand for small wind turbines on rooftops in residential areas is increasing, underscoring the importance of safety evaluations. However, there are no domestically certified rooftop small wind turbines, and reasonable safety assessments have not been conducted for the introduction of existing small wind turbines onto rooftops. Therefore, this paper proposes an index for the safety assessment of rooftop wind turbines and suggests a methodology for evaluating safety. The proposed index combines weights based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) and Fuzzy logic to quantify qualitative factors. In the case study, the proposed safety index for rooftop wind turbines is assessed based on actual data obtained through a survey of approximately 150 experts, and its usefulness is validated. It is expected that the proposed safety assessment methodology will serve as a criterion for the installation and distribution of rooftop small wind turbines, ensuring their safe operation. In this article, the analysis of electromagnetic performances and loss according to the operating ranges are conducted through the comparative study with surfaced mounted permanent magnet synchronous machine(SPMSM) and vernier PM machine(VPMM), which is classified into flux modulation pole and no flux modulation pole types. We investigated SPMSM and VPMM show different flux weakening capability at high speed, VPMM can maintain high torque due to the flux modulation effect but SPMSM was not. We revealed that high torque and power factor are related with the gear ratio closely for VPMM and SPMSM. Furthermore, VPMM with high gear ratio model is subjected to the influence of eddy current which causes degradation of the output torque and the loss of rotor core tends to be increased depending on levels of flux modulation. Microwave imaging has long been reported for locating buried anomalies inside a bulk object as relying upon external measurements of microwave data. The approach is noninvasive, low-cost, portable, and the use of non-ionizing radiation makes it popular for biomedical applications. In this work, we explore the experimental feasibility of a conformal microwave imaging system, where the antennas are mounted on or very close to the imaging object. Our proof of concept setup entails 12 antennas surrounding a plastic cylindrical frame in free space with two dielectric cylinders used as anomalies. S-parameters were measured using a network analyzer and a 12-port switching matrix. For imaging, we used the Born Iterative Method, where the data equation was replaced with the S-parameter sensitivity formula. Simulation and measurement results show good quality image reconstruction, asserting the feasibility of the proposed conformal imaging setup. Future work will incorporate tissue-emulating materials to ultimately develop a stable and wearable imaging system. © 2025 USNC-URSI.

Enhancing the Kubernetes Platform with a Load-Aware Orchestration Strategy

Microservice architecture is increasingly favored for building large-scale applications designed for deployment in distributed and resource-constrained cloud-to-edge computing environments. As a cloud-native approach, microservices are particularly powerful due to their loosely coupled, independently deployable, and scalable characteristics. These features enable distributed deployment and flexible integration across robust cloud data centers and heterogeneous, often resource-limited, edge nodes. To fully leverage these advantages, there is a need for advanced placement algorithms that can optimize application performance by utilizing the strengths of microservices. In response to these challenges, we propose to extend Kubernetes with a load-aware orchestration strategy, which enhances its capability to deploy microservice applications within shared clusters characterized by dynamic resource usage patterns. Our approach orchestrates applications dynamically, based on real-time resource usage, allowing for continuous adjustment of their placement to match evolving conditions. Evaluation of a prototype system in a testbed environment demonstrates that this approach offers substantial benefits compared to the standard Kubernetes scheduler. © The Author(s) 2025.

Dealing with voltage sags during motor startup is crucial because they can delay power restoration and lead to widespread failures for industrial loads and distribution systems. A novel approach is introduced to investigate voltage sag in distribution networks using solid-state transformers (SSTs) instead of traditional ones. The induction motor startup model is employed to simulate voltage sags, accurately representing the characteristics influenced by conventional industrial loads. The inherent capabilities of SSTs are leveraged to mitigate these voltage sag issues effectively. This study focuses on analyzing voltage sags caused by the activation of induction motors in power systems, with particular emphasis on SST technology, which actively regulates voltage during motor starting by controlling reactive power. The selected distribution system is implemented and tested using MATLAB/Simulink. The results will be compared with previous research on voltage sag during motor startup, demonstrating the improvements and effectiveness of using SSTs in managing power quality issues. This study emphasizes the potential of SSTs to improve the stability and reliability of power systems during the challenging conditions of motor startup. © 2025 IEEE.

Kidney disorders are a major public health issue affecting millions worldwide. Renal calculi and cancer are prevalent, causing chronic kidney disease(CKD). Artificial intelligence can assist in the precise diagnosis of kidney *** developed an end-to-end system using a custom CNN model to extract informative features from kidney images. Multiple ML classifiers provide complementary perspectives. A High-Performance Filter(HPF) selects the top classifiers for an ensemble model. The interactive web interface enables real-time prediction. Our approach achieves excellent performance metrics with an accuracy of 99.98%. Overall, We demonstrate an automated system combining deep learning and ensembling for the accurate characterization of diverse kidney abnormalities, which can aid in the early detection and treatment of CKD. © 2024 IEEE.

Lithium-ion batteries are being utilized as energy sources for electric vehicles due to their advantages such as high energy density, long life, and high efficiency. In order to ensure the safe condition of lithium-ion batteries under various driving conditions of electric vehicles, it is necessary to analyze the degradation status and causes of lithium-ion batteries and accurately estimate their state of health (SOH). Therefore, this paper proposes a method for estimating the SOH of lithium-ion batteries using incremental capacity analysis and deep learning. Incremental capacity analysis is a technique that analyzes the electrochemical state inside a lithium-ion battery and can identify the degradation state of the battery. Through this method, parameters related to degradation were extracted, and their usefulness as characteristic parameters for SOH estimation was verified by correlation analysis. The characteristic parameters validated through correlation analysis were used as inputs to deep learning algorithms for SOH estimation to compare the accuracy of SOH estimation by different estimation algorithms. © 2024 Korean Institute of electrical Engineers. A Study on Operation Method of Protection Coordination in Community Micro-Grid System Considering Self Energy Supply Rate

Recently, while the installations of renewable energy sources and MG system to solve global environment issues are actively being performed, demonstration projects on community MG system to secure self-energy supply rate are being carried out in Jeollanam-do province in Korea. Where, the community MG system can be operated as a type of grid-connected or off-grid MG systems depending on the self-energy supply rate, and the power outage region may be expanded in the 3-phase short circuit or single line ground fault if proper time intervals of protection coordination between forward and backup protection devices is not secured. Therefore, this paper proposes operation method of protection coordination to secure the minimum time intervals of protection coordination not only between protection devices(CB, recloser) in primary feeder and MG customer relay in the grid-connected MG system, but also between MG customer relay in CVCF inverter(diesel generator) and other MG customer relay in the off-grid MG system. Furthermore, this paper performs the modeling of grid-connected and off-grid community MG systems, which is composed of distribution system, ESS, PV system and geothermal generator, using PSCAD/EMTDC S/W in order to analyze the fault current characteristics in the case of 3-phase short circuit and single line ground faults. From the simulation results based on the fault current characteristics and Off-DAS S/W of protection coordination analysis program, it is confirmed that the proposed operation method is useful tool to operate community MG system because the time intervals of protection coordination between forward and backup protection devices are properly secured in all contingency scenarios. A Study on Scalar Control of a Synchronous Motor Considering Stator Resistance

In conventional constant V/f control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor, it is well known that maximum torque at a given frequency remains constant in spite of change of frequency. However, maximum torque at a given frequency does not remain constant as frequency varies since stator resistance is neglected. This paper shows that the maximum torque of conventional constant V/f control decreases as frequency decreases. In the proposed method, a voltage for scalar control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor considering stator resistance is presented and it is shown that maximum torque at a given frequency remains constant in spite of change of frequency. In simulation results, it is shown that speed control under load is not achieved by constant V/f control because of the decrease of torque level as frequency decreases. In addition, it is shown that motor starting is achieved under load and speed is regulated with the change of load torque in the proposed method. Further, it is also seen that speed reversal operation is achieved in the proposed method. Copyright © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.
