Analysis of the gain characteristic in LLCC resonant converter for plasma power supply

The plasma process is applied to various industrial fields such as high-tech IT industry, textiles and medical. Therefore, there is increasing interest in the plasma power supply, and demand for power devices of high efficiency and high power density is increased. Plasma power supply for process must solve the arc problem, when the plasma is unstable. The output capacitor is closely related to the arc problem. If the output capacitor is smaller, the damage from the arc problem is reduced. However, the small value of the output capacitor affects the operating characteristics of the power supply. In this paper, a LLC resonant converter is adopted, because it can achieve high efficiency and power density in the plasma DC power supply. However, due to the small value of the output capacitor, the converter is operated as a LLCC resonant converter. Therefore, a gain characteristic of LLCC resonant converter is analyzed by using the FHA (First Harmonic Approximation) in plasma power supply. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the characteristic analysis of LLCC Resonant Converter. Copyright © 2016 The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.

Critical conduction mode bridgeless PFC converter based on a digital control

Generally, in order to implement the CRM(Critical Conduction Mode), the analog controller is used rather than a digital controller because the control is simple and uses less power. However, according to the semiconductor technology development and various user needs, digital control system based on a DSP is on the rise. Therefore, in this paper, the CRM bridgeless PFC converter based on a digital control is proposed. It is necessary to detect the inductor current when it reaches zero and peak value, for calculating the on time and off time by using the current information. However, in this paper, the on-time and off-time are calculated by using the proposed algorithm without any current information. If the switching-times are calculated through the steady-state analysis of the converter, they do not reflect transient status such as starting-up. Therefore, the calculated frequency is out of range, and the transient current is generated. In order to solve these problems, limitation method of the on-time and off-time is used, and the limitation values are varied according to the voltage reference. In addition, in steady state, depending on the switching frequency, the inductance is varied because of the resonance between the inductor and the parasitic capacitance of the switching elements. In order to solve the problem, inductance are measured depending on the switching frequency. The measured inductance are used to calculate the switching time for preventing the transient current. In this paper, three kinds of the inverter topologies for the variable speed drive of 2-phase induction motor are compared and analyzed. The 2-phase inverters are classified into 2-leg, 3-leg, and 4-leg types depending on the number of power switching devices. And they use the output voltage vectors of the different forms according to the inverter topologies. Based on the comparative analyzed results, the effective values of output voltage have been defined by the linear modulation range. Therefore, the motor design guideline is proposed in order to decide a rated voltage of 2-phase induction motor according to the inverter topologies. Also, the computer simulations are carried out to verify the output voltage and current characteristics of each inverter topology. Copyright © The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.

An important characteristic in multicell parallel voltage source converters (VSCs), besides the enhancing of the current capacity, is the possibility of decreasing the energy storage in the output filter by interleaving the pulses sent to the semiconductors. As consequences, the filter components are smaller, losses are reduced and the electrical dynamics is enhanced, i.e. the filter presents higher bandwidth. Despite the higher speed as the number of cells increases, the filter's closed loop dynamics cannot follow continuously this improvement once the sampling/switching frequency limits the controller actuation. This paper presents a review about VSC output LCL filters and describes a methodology for the current controller design followed by an analysis in the frequency domain of the system's overall dynamics as the number of cells increases. © 2016 IEEE.

The dual active bridge (DAB) topology has been widely used in the industrial field, especially when bidirectional power transfer is required. However, the efficiency improvement of DAB converters is facing challenges and it is worthwhile devoting much effort to it. This paper presents a novel model based on the triple phase shift (TPS) modulation scheme to improve the efficiency of the dual active bridge (DAB) converter. According to the documentary proposed analytic expressions of six different modes of DAB converters, the constraints of zero voltage switching (ZVS) is achieved to further improve the efficiency of DAB converters. It is theoretically verified that almost full ZVS operation range for all the switching devices and quasi-minimum RMS value of the inductor current can be achieved for two operating modes. Finally, the simulating results from MATLAB/Simulink and the experimental results based on a hardware prototype were presented. By comparing the efficiency of the proposed all-ZVS operation and SPS operation, it can be concluded that the experimental results confirm that the novel proposed all-ZVS strategy can decrease the switching loss and increase the efficiency of the DAB converter simultaneously, which verifies the theoretic analysis.

This paper describes methods for the analysis and design of control applications with real-time constraints, which allow data losses in the sensing-to-actuation path governed by the property of (m, k)-firmness. An automaton consisting of open- and closed-loop dynamics and a graph representing (m, k)-firmness defines the overall system behavior as a constrained switched linear system. The worst-case quadratic cost is analyzed for a given optimal linear quadratic regulator design. A simple analytic upper bounding method is compared to a method based on solving a (computationally more complex) semidefinite program. Furthermore, control design methods for performance improvement for the worst case are presented. A known LMI-based method is compared to an iterative controller improvement scheme inspired by ideas from dynamic programming. Conservatism and computational effort of the methods are discussed. A numerical example is used for illustration.

As the supply potential has declined gradually and the pressure for better environment intensifies, the demand for clean energy arises continuously. The consumptive demand for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) thus increases. However, load peak caused by their disordered charging can be detrimental to an entire power grid. Several methods have been proposed to establish ordered PHEV charging. While focusing on single-objective optimal load scheduling, they fail to meet the real requirements for efficient multiple objective optimization. This work proposes a novel weight-aggregation based multi-objective particle swarm optimization method to solve the load scheduling problem. Its effectiveness and efficiency to generate a Pareto front of this problem are verified and compared with those of the state-of-the-art approaches.

This paper presents a novel facial expression recognition approach in the presence of partial occlusion using Gabor filters and gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM). At first, we design an algorithm to extract the block Gabor feature statistics according to the spatial distribution of the face organ. Then, GLCM is firstly introduced into expression recognition field to make up for the deficiency of block Gabor feature, in which the association between pixels is absent. Finally, the block Gabor feature statistics is linear superimposed with the texture feature extracted by GLCM, after Gaussian normalization there generates a set of low-dimensional feature vectors for expression feature representation. The experimental results on JAFFE and RaFD show the high robustness and better recognition rates of the proposed novel approach under different types of occlusion. © 2015 IEEE.

In recent years, sonar has been widely used for restoring the underwater terrain. Sonar imaging has the benefits such as long-range photographing, robust for turbidity water. However, it is not suitable for short-range imaging. Meanwhile, it also cannot meet the need of mining machine. Therefore, it is important to develop a 3D reconstruction method for short-range imaging. In this paper, we propose a Kinect-based underwater 3D image reconstruction method. To overcome the drawbacks of low accuracy of dept. maps, we propose a novel super-resolution (SR) method, which uses the underwater dark channel prior dehazing, weight guided image SR, and inpainting. The proposed method considered the influence of mud sediments in water, it performs better than the traditional methods. The experimental results demonstrated that, after inpainting, dehazing and the super-resolution, it can obtain high accuracy dept. maps.

Climate change is challenging the current worldwide model of power generation. In this sense, European Union is promoting a deep transition collected in the 20-20-20 targets and the 2050 Energy Roadmap. These adjectives must be achieved by developing the use of clean, carbon-free energies, as it is the case of the renewableenergies and in particular of the ocean energy. The main problem with these kinds of energies is to reach a commercially mature stage so they can compete with conventional power sources. Therefore, it is crucial to reduce generation costs and increase the efficiency of the existing devices. With this regard, thework presents the modelling and experimental validation of the capture chamber of an Oscillating Water Column (OWC)-based powerplant. Although the study of the turbine and the generator may be considered a quite well-known matter, the control-oriented modelling of the capture chamber still deserves a further study to improve the power generation. In this work, a model obtained analytically of the OWC chamber is developed and numerically implemented. The model proposed is also validated and affords excellent results.
