This paper presents the application of a statistical method for model structure selection of lift-drag and viscous damping components in ship manoeuvring models. The damping model is posed as a family of linear stochastic models, which is postulated based on previous work in the literature. Then a nested test of hypothesis problem is considered. The testing reduces to a recursive comparison of two competing models, for which optimal tests in the Neyman sense exist. The method yields a preferred model structure and its initial parameter estimates. Alternatively, the method can give a reduced set of likely models. Using simulated data we study how the selection method performs when there is both uncorrelated and correlated noise in the measurements. The first case is related to instrumentation noise, whereas the second case is related to spurious wave-induced motion often present during sea trials. We then consider the model structure selection of a modern high-speed trimaran ferry from full scale trial data.

To optimize the energy consumption during transmission in a secure remote fingerprint authentication system, most approaches have considered a fixed-rate compression of WSQ(Wavelet Scalar Quantization). To balance the energy consumption and the recognition accuracy, however, we need to consider the total energy consumption during compression/encryption/transmission and the quality of the given image. In this paper, we first develop an energy-accuracy prediction model. Then, from the given image, we can evaluate the quality of it. Finally, from the user's minimum requirement of the recognition accuracy, the energy-optimized compression rate under the requirement can be derived adaptively. Based on the experimental result, we show that total energy consumption of the fixed approach can be reduced by 29%.

We use electro-thermal simulations to design thermal isolated membranes that supports thin film heaters as components of gas preconcentrators, these heaters provide a good thermal homogeneity ensuring a narrow desorption peak and improving in this way the sensors response. The carrier recovery is one key technique in the demodulation of high order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. A carrier recovery algorithm which switches between multi-threshold polarity decision mode and decision directed mode according to the standard deviation of the frequency of numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) is proposed. The proposed algorithm can detect a proper time for the mode switch to yield lower steady state error. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in improving the performance of blind carrier recovery.
