The modeling of domains is today a technique with growing acceptance into the software community. Domain models allow the information to be represented in the computer at higher abstraction levels than in the usual applications, so improving the human to machine and machine to machine interactions. This paper deals with the application of such modeling paradigm to the controlengineering education field, showing how the knowledge of this domain can be represented in a conceptual structure called ontology which is used as the base for building an Intelligent Tutoring System, a software tool used in the emerging field of e-learning.

System identification of continuous-time systems can be realized using either direct or indirect methods. Both methods are considered in this paper to identify linear models for a direct steam injection pasteurization process of an industrial evaporator in the dairy industry. The results of the system identification indicate that the plant can be reliably modeled by two first-order lag plus delay models-one representing the process, the other the disturbance. A statistical analysis of the results reveals that the direct-continuous time method estimates models whose coefficients have less variance than the models estimated by the indirect method

In this paper, a unique road contour extraction approach from high resolution satellite image is proposed, in which the road contour was extracted in two steps. Firstly, support vector machines (SVM) was employed merely to classify the image into two groups of categories: a road group and a non-road group. The identified road group images are the discrete and irregularly distributed sampled points, and they are an uncompleted data set for the road. Secondly, the road contour was extracted from the road group images using the tensor voting framework, since the tensor voting technique is superior to the traditional methods in extracting the geometrical structure from the uncompleted data set. The experimental results on the high resolution satellite image demonstrate that the proposed approach worked well with images comprised by both rural and urban area features.

In all mechanical devices, motors are subject to failures, which can sometimes lead to the shutting down of an entire industrial process. That is the reason why predictive maintenance and prognosis are necessary. Motor current signature analysis is a condition monitoring technique that is now widely used to diagnose problems such as broken rotor bars, abnormal levels of airgap eccentricity, shorted turns in low voltage stator windings and some mechanical problems. This paper presents the effect of the broken bar time evolution since the created incipient fault on the various characteristics of the induction machine such as torque, speed and currents. The purpose of this paper is to describe a tool that is easy to use for implementing self learning fuzzy systems. This tool which is called FuNNy generates fuzzy systems. The tool consists of a compiler and a C learning library. The compiler translates a fuzzy system (written in a dedicated language, called FuNNy language) to C. The C learning library contains the learning algorithm. The generated C code is simple standard C and therefore it can be applied to all computers with a C-compiler. The learning algorithm is either a gradient descend method based on a numerical calculation of the gradient or a random search method. The input fuzzyfication can be described by four different kinds of membership functions. The output fuzzyfication is based on singletons. The rule base can be written in a natural language. The result of the learning is a new version of the fuzzy system described in the FuNNy language.

We propose a multilevel full-chip routing algorithm that improves testability and diagnosability, manufacturability, and signal integrity for yield enhancement. Two major issues are addressed. (1) The oscillation ring (OR) test and its diagnosis scheme for interconnect based on the IEEE P1500 are integrated into the multilevel routing framework to achieve testability enhancement. (2) We present a heuristic to balance routing congestion to optimize the multiple-fault probability, chemical mechanic polishing (CMP) and optical proximity correction (OPC) induced manufacturability, and crosstalk effects, for yield improvement. Experimental results on the MCNC benchmark circuits show that the proposed OR method achieves 100% fault coverage and the maximal diagnosis resolution for interconnects, and the multilevel routing algorithm effectively balances the routing density to achieve 100% routing completion. Compared with [14], the experimental results show that our router improves the maximal congestion by 1.24X - 6.11X in runtime speedup by 1.08X- - 7.66X, and improves the average congestion by 1.00X - 4.52X with the improved congestion deviation by 1.37X - 5.55X.
