Reconstruction of pixel-based and geometric objects by discrete tomography. Simulation and physical experiments

Tomography is an imaging technique to reconstruct cross-sections of objects from projection images in a non-destructive way. We have implemented two discrete tomographic (DT) reconstruction methods. The first method is general in the sense that the objects to be reconstructed are represented by pixels, and in this way the method can be used for reconstructing any shape. The second one is able to reconstruct objects consisting of cylinders and spheres made of homogeneous materials only. Simulation and physical experiments connected with non-destructive testing by X-rays were performed, and the results are presented. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An efficient algorithm for reconstructing binary matrices from horizontal and vertical absorbed projections

This paper studies the classical tomographical problem of the reconstruction of a binary matrix from projections in presence of absorption. In particular, we consider two projections along the horizontal and vertical directions and the mathematically interesting case of the absorption coefficient β₀ = frac(1 + sqrt(5), 2). After proving some theoretical results on the switching components, we furnish a fast algorithm for solving the reconstruction problem from the horizontal and vertical absorbed projections. As a significative remark, we obtain also the solution of the related uniqueness problem. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We show that discrete tomography (DT) is suitable to increase the possible inspection size of single material oblong objects compared to filtered back projection (FBP) in non-destructive testing (NDT) with 2D X-ray computed tomography (CT). For such objects which are in one dimension larger than the maximum detectable material thickness limited view angles occur and FBP is not suitable for reconstruction. For evaluation of the reconstruction performance a copper phantom (strong absorber) which exhibits typical problems for NDT was manufactured. The increase of the object size with DT reconstruction compared to FBP was estimated to be above 50%. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Increasing attention is currently being given to the problem of an effective synchronization in live performance, between musicians and electronic synthesis system, in order to add a satisfactory degree of human sensitiveness to computer music. The authors of this paper developed a man-machine interface for controlling human instrumentalists and computers at the same time. The system recognizes the movements and the gestures that conductors usually perform in accordance with international standards. The interface consists of a special conductor baton, and a personal computer with a special image acquisition board connected to a CCD camera. The movements of a small lamp on the top of the baton are detected by the camera, digitized as the light point position changes, and properly stored. A best fitting interpolating method is used for carrying out the corresponding path, for increasing time resolution and for predicting beat points. Information extracted in the analysis are: beat point prediction, order number of the beats, amplitude of gestures, end of movement, absence of light points, the data produced are then used for affecting the musical performance. This system is usually used for synchronizing musicians and computers;furthermore, it can be used for learning conductor movements for controlling real-time algorithmic compositions. © ICMC 1992. Semantic Segmentation for Thermal images: A Comparative Survey

Semantic segmentation is a challenging task since it requires excessively more low-level spatial information of the image compared to other computer vision problems. The accuracy of pixel-level classification can be affected by many factors, such as imaging limitations and the ambiguity of object boundaries in an image. Conventional methods exploit three-channel RGB images captured in the visible spectrum with deep neural networks (DNN). Thermal images can significantly contribute during the segmentation since thermal imaging cameras are capable of capturing details despite the weather and illumination conditions. Using infrared spectrum in semantic segmentation has many real-world use cases, such as autonomous driving, medical imaging, agriculture, defense industry, etc. Due to this wide range of use cases, designing accurate semantic segmentation algorithms with the help of infrared spectrum is an important challenge. One approach is to use both visible and infrared spectrum images as inputs. These methods can accomplish higher accuracy due to enriched input information, with the cost of extra effort for the alignment and proc.ssing of multiple inputs. Another approach is to use only thermal images, enabling less hardware cost for smaller use cases. Even though there are multiple surveys on semantic segmentation methods, the literature lacks a comprehensive survey centered explicitly around semantic segmentation using infrared spectrum. Spatio-temporal motion-compensated wavelet decomposition is an increasingly popular method for scalable video coding, with coding efficiency which is competitive with state-of-the-art non-scalable codecs. In this paper, we propose a new spatio-temporal update operator in the lifting scheme allowing efficient implementation of these temporal decompositions. We demonstrate its improved performance both theoretically, by exhibiting a decrease in the reconstruction error, and by simulation results. © 2004 IEEE.

Multiple description coding (MDC) is a joint source-channel coding technique specifically designed for real-time multimedia applications over best effort switched packet networks (such as Internet), in order to cope with packet losses due to transmission errors or network congestion. Error resilience of transmitted bitstreams is thus significantly increased, but this does not solve problems like bitstream adaptation to bandwidth variations or receiver characteristics, which are in turn addressed by scalable coding techniques. In this paper, we present a new method of multiple description coding of scalable video, combining the scalability features with MDC. It is based on a motion-compensated spatio-temporal subband decomposition, where the redundancy is tunable in a frame-like non-linear temporal representation. © 2004 EUSIPCO.

Augmentation of Atmospheric Turbulence Effects on Thermal Adapted Object Detection Models

Atmospheric turbulence has a degrading effect on the image quality of long-range observation systems. As a result of various elements such as temperature, wind velocity, humidity, etc., turbulence is characterized by random fluctuations in the refractive index of the atmosphere. It is a phenomenon that may occur in various imaging spectra such as the visible or the infrared bands. In this paper, we analyze the effects of atmospheric turbulence on object detection performance in thermal imagery. We use a geometric turbulence model to simulate turbulence effects on a medium-scale thermal image set, namely "FLIR ADAS v2". We apply thermal domain adaptation to state-of-the-art object detectors and propose a data augmentation strategy to increase the performance of object detectors which utilizes turbulent images in different severity levels as training data. Our results show that the proposed data augmentation strategy yields an increase in performance for both turbulent and non-turbulent thermal test images. © 2022, CC BY.
