This paper presents a text localization approach for binarized printed document images. Emphasis is given to the feature extraction and feature selection stages. In the former, several document structure elements and spatial features, likely to convey useful information, are extracted. In the latter, evolutionary multiobjective feature selection is employed to identify combinations of features with simultaneous good performance in terms of text localization sensitivity and specificity. The selected features are applied to a range of classifiers. Performance results over document image sets from known databases are presented, employing the classifiers with or without feature selection. The results suggest that the hybrid techniques, which utilize the classifiers in combination with the customized pre-processing, feature extraction and feature selection stages, exhibit promising performance on a range of document images. © 2009 IEEE.

Video representations that support view synthesis based on dept. maps, such as multiview plus dept. (MVD), have been recently proposed, raising interest in efficient tools for dept. map coding. In this paper, we derive a new distortion metric that takes into consideration camera parameters and global video characteristics in order to quantify the effect of lossy coding of dept. maps on synthesized view quality. In addition, a new skip mode selection method is proposed based on local video characteristics. Experimental results with the proposed mode selection scheme show coding gains of up to 2 dB for the synthesized views, as well as better subjective quality.

This paper presents a novelframe fusion algorithm that aims at improving the side information in distributed video coding. Using a genetic algorithm, the proposed technique combines several interpolated frames, obtained by any existing methods, in a fusion based approach. Simulation results show a significant improvement in the side information quality, where the gain in PSNR exceeds ldB most of the time, and can even reach 20 dBfor some frames, compared to classical interpolation techniques available in the literature.

Three dimensional renditions of anatomical structures are commonly used to improve visualization, surgical planning, and patient education. However, such 3D images also contain information which is not readily apparent, and which can be mined to elucidate, for example, such parameters as joint kinematics, spacial relationships, and distortions of those relationships with movement. Here we describe two series of experiments which demonstrate the functional application of 3D imaging. The first concerns the joints of the ankle complex, where the usual description of motions in the talocrural joint is shown to be incomplete, and where the roles of the anterior talofibular and calcaneofibular ligaments are clarified in ankle sprains. Also, the biomechanical effects of two common surgical procedures for repairing torn ligaments were examined. The second series of experiments explores changes in the anatomical relationships between nerve elements and the cervical vertebrae with changes in neck position. They provide preliminary evidence that morphological differences may exist between asymptomatic subjects and patients with radiculopathy in certain positions, even when conventional imaging shows no difference. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical engineering.

Broadband adaptive beamforming algorithms based on the least mean square (LMS) family are known to exhibit slow convergence, if the input is correlated. In this paper, we will utilised a recently proposed broadband eigenvalue decomposition method to provide strong spatial decorrelation, while at the same time reduces the subspace in which the beamforming algorithm operates. Additional temporal decorrelation is gained by operating the beamformer in oversampled filter banks. Hybrid structures which combine both spatial and temporal decorrelation demonstrate to provide faster convergence speed than the normalised LMS algorithm or either of the decorrelation approach on its own.

In this work, we introduce a score fusion scheme to improve the 3D object retrieval performance. The state of the art in 3D object retrieval shows that no single descriptor is capable of providing fine grain discrimination required by prospective 3D search engines. The proposed fusion algorithm linearly combines similarity information originating from multiple shape descriptors and learns their optimal combination of weights by minimizing the empirical ranking risk criterion. The algorithm is based on the statistical ranking framework [CLV07], for which consistency and fast rate of convergence of empirical ranking risk minimizers have been established. We report the results of ontology-driven and relevance feedback searches on a large 3D object database, the Princeton Shape Benchmark. Experiments show that, under query formulations with user intervention, the proposed score fusion scheme boosts the performance of the 3D retrieval machine significantly. © The Eurographics Association 2008.

Community Coordinated Multimedia (CCM) provides an extended and enhanced human experience by collaboratively consuming electronic and networked content and multimedia-intensive services. Community coordinated multimedia vision raises the challenges of multimedia content creation, interpretation, exchange, and consumption over a large range of heterogeneous services, terminals and networks. The development of CCM metamodel plays a key role in tackling these challenges by enabling the transparent multimedia aggregation and exchange crossing communities. This paper aims to design and develop the CCM metamodel. A generic terminology for CCM metamodeling is developed. A extensive study on metamodeling activities and metamodeling methodologies is presented. A combined metamodeling approach is proposed for the CCM metamodel development. Experiences and results on the CCM metamodeling and CCM metamodel-driven content annotation prototype are elaborated. © 2008 IEEE.

Pulse coupled neural networks (PCNN) is a mammal visual cortex-inspired artificial neural networks. Owing to the coupling links in neurons, PCNN is successful to utilize the local information, thus it has been successfully employed in image fusion. However, in traditional PCNN for image fusion, value of per pixel is used to motivate per neuron. In this paper, image feature of per pixel, e.g. gradient and local energy, is used to motivate per neuron and generate firing maps. Each firing map is corresponding to one type feature. Furthermore, a new multichannel PCNN is presented to combine these firing maps via a weighting function which measures the contribution of these features to the fused image quality. Finally, pixels with maximum firing times, when firing times of source images are compared, are selected as the pixels of the fused image. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms Waveletbased and Wavelet-PCNN-based fusion algorithms. © 2008 IEEE.

Document binarization is an active research area for many years. There are many difficulties associated with satisfactory binarization of document images and especially in cases of degraded historical documents. In this paper, we try to answer the question "how well an existing binarization algorithm can binarize a degraded document image?" We propose a new technique for the validation of document binarization algorithms. Our method is simple in its implementation and can be performed on any binarization algorithm since it doesn't require anything more than the binarization stage. Then we apply the proposed technique to 30 existing binarization algorithms. Experimental results and conclusions are presented. © 2008 IEEE.
