In this paper we investigate the local probability density function (pdf) of natural signals in sparse domains. The statistical properties of natural signals are characterized more accurately in the sparse domains because the sparse domain coefficients (SDCs) have heavy-tailed distribution and have reduced correlation with adjacent coefficients. Our experiments show that a conditionally (given locally estimated variance and shape) independent Bessel K-form (BKF) pdf locally fits the sparse domain's coefficients of natural signals, accurately. To justify this observation, we also investigate the pdf of the locally estimated variance and suggest a Gamma pdf for the locally estimated variance. Since commonly used sparse transformations are orthonormal, the pdf of the sparse domain coefficients must converge to Gaussian distribution by virtue of central limit theorem assuming that natural signals are locally wide sense stationary for small window sizes. Interestingly, we observe that the pdf of the normalized data (on the locally estimated variance) exhibit a Gaussian pdf, which justifies why the BKF pdf is an appropriate fit.

Discrete bit loading for multicarrier systems based on the greedy power allocation (GPA) algorithm is considered in this paper. A new suboptimal scheme that independently performs GPA on groups of subcarriers and therefore can significantly reduce complexity compared to the standard GPA is proposed. These groups are formed in an initial step of a uniform power allocation (UPA) algorithm. In order to more efficiently allocate the available transmit power, two power re-distribution algorithms are further introduced by including a transfer of residual power between groups. Simulation results show that the two proposed algorithms can achieve near optimal performance in two separate and distinctive SNR regions. We demonstrate by analysis how these methods can greatly simplify the computational complexity of the GPA algorithm.

This paper presents an experimental protocol for the assessment of devices and systems' accessibility to be used by people with visual impairments. This protocol was adapted from an experimental protocol originally conceived for usability evaluation of products and systems at the Laboratory of Human-Machine Interfaces (LIHM) at the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), in Brazil. The adoption of a systematic approach when performing the accessibility evaluation gives the evaluation results a more reliable basis for claims as well as enabling to replicate the experiments performed. The paper presents the protocol and discusses how to employ it in the evaluation of a set of resources conceived to promote accessibility for people with visual impairments.

In a world where surveillance cameras are at every street corner, there is a growing need for synergy among cameras as well as the automation of the data analysis process. This paper deals with the problem of reidentification of objects in a set of multiple cameras inputs without any prior knowledge of the cameras distribution or coverage. The proposed approach is robust to change of scale, lighting conditions, noise and viewpoints among cameras, as well as object rotation and unpredictable trajectories. Both novel and traditional features are extracted from the object. Light and noise invariance is achieved using textural features such as oriented gradients, color ratio and color saliency. A probabilistic framework is used incorporating the different features into a human probabilistic model. Experimental results show that textural features improve the reidentification rate and the robustness of the recognition process compared with other state-of-the-art algorithms.
