A large percentage of fraudulent spam mails are believed to originate from Nigeria or from Nigerians in remote locations. These mails (popularly referred to as 419 spam) come in broad categories but all with the intent of defrauding the recipients'. Testing the validity of senders and receivers address is one method that has been used to filter spam mails. This approach will not filter out ordinary e-mails since typical e-mail users will always include their true e-mail addresses to facilitate replies. Checking the IPaddresses of 419 mails is a way of ascertaining their actual origin. This can be done with the intention to build a database of e-mail abuse or to blacklist addresses from which fraudulent mails are originating keeping in mind that blacklisted IP addresses could be used to stop the delivery of further mails from such addresses in the future. To this end, this research examines features selected specifically from the content analysis of Nigeria spam e-mail. A domain specific statistical content analysis tool (e-STAT) was developed and implemented using Bayesian statistical technique. The software was tested and trained with a sizeable balanced corpus of Nigerian 419 spam e-mails and normal (ham) e-mails. Analysis of classified mails using e-STAT showed that current concept drift patterns among Nigerian 419 spammers and provided a blacklist of about 2,173 e-mail sender's addresses, 563 URLs within spam mails and a total of 13,491 bag-of-words common to Nigerian spam e-mails. The research obtained results that will guide future research in the domain of 419 mails in designing effective spam filters and electronic mail classifiers. ©2009 IEEE.

Visual attention region determination simulates the behavior of the human visual system and determines visual attention regions in an image. In this study, a visual attention region determination approach using low-level features, including luminance, color, and region inf.rmation, is proposed. First, the contrast map is attained by computing the contrast between each pixel and its ldquothresholdingrdquo neighboring pixels in eight directions, based on the just noticeable difference (JND) model. Then, the block-based edge map and standard deviation representation are used to generate the region mask. The saliency map is obtained by using the contrast map and the region mask. Finally, a visual attention region determination scheme is presented to determine visual attention region(s) in the image. Based on the experimental results obtained in this study, the proposed approach has better performance than two comparison approaches.

Traditional proprietary IT system development method for the Futures Commission Merchant (FCM) is insufficient to catch up with fast changing pace of globalization. Thus, major futures exchanges and FCMs around the world have been actively seeking for low cost development inf.astructures such that the revision, upgrade and maintenance can be accomplished within the least amount of time. We propose a common platform inf.astructure that divides the IT system for the FCMs into common module and customization module. Each module can then be developed independently based on common API. Not only can such inf.astructure be suitable for the front-end, middle-end and back-end systems of the FCMs, but widely applied to the market inf.rmation and surveillance systems development as well.

Interpersonal motions and their expression are proposed for a mobile eye robot. An interpersonal motion that consists of an interpersonal distance, a motion speed, and a motion trajectory is determined according to verbal inf.rmation received from human in an interactive situation using a proposed fuzzy inf.rence based on a mental distance type pleasure-arousal space. Interactive experiments with two scenarios are performed in an inf.rmation recommendation situation with the mascot robot system. Subjective estimations using psychological scale are conducted for 11 subjects. Since the results of the subjective estimation show 3.08 and 2.62 (out of 6), the validity of the interpersonal motions expression is confirmed. The system provides user-friendly and casual inf.rmation recommendation, which is essential for wide spread family use.

In multi-hop wireless networks, network coding can take advantage of the bi-directional traffic flows to increase the achievable throughput. To combat fading in wireless channel, cooperative diversity is integrated into the network-coding schemes. In this paper, we propose an opportunistic cooperative network-coding scheme based on space-time coding (OCNC), which combats channel fading and improves resource efficiency and network throughput. Focusing on the bi-directional traffic flows in wireless cooperative relaying networks, we develop and analyze the outage probabilities and the network-coding gain of different bi-directional relaying schemes. The numerical results show that in contrast to traditional scheme both full diversity (i.e. k-order diversity in case of K relay nodes) and asymptotical 4/3 times of network-coding gain are achieved by OCNC. In addition, because of opportunistic relaying of multiple nodes, the network-coding gain is more considerable in the low and middle SNR regimes. © 2008 IEEE.

Modern Bayesian Network learning algorithms are time-efficient, scalable and produce high-quality models;these algorithms feature prominently in decision support model development, variable selection, and causal discovery. The quality of the models, however, has often only been empirically evaluated;the available theoretical results typically guarantee asymptotic correctness (consistency) of the algorithms. This paper describes theoretical bounds on the quality of a fundamental Bayesian Network local-learning task in the finite sample using theories for controlling the False Discovery Rate. The behavior of the derived bounds is investigated across various problem and algorithm parameters. Empirical results support the theory which has immediate ramifications in the design of new algorithms for Bayesian Network learning, variable selection and causal discovery. Sorting large data sets has always been an important application, and hence has been one of the benchmark applications on new parallel architectures. We present a parallel sorting algorithm for the Cell processor that combines elements of bitonic sort and merge sort, and reduces the bandwidth to main memory by pipelining. We present runtime results of a partial prototype implementation and simulation results for the complete sorting algorithm, that promise performance advantages over previous implementations. © 2008 Gesellschaft fur inf.rmatik (GI). The paper presents a hybrid thresholding approach for binarization and enhancement of degraded documents. Historical documents contain inf.rmation of great cultural and scientific value. But such documents are frequently degraded over time. Digitized degraded documents require specialized processing to remove different kinds of noise and to improve readability. The approach for enhancing degraded documents uses a combination of two thresholding algorithms. First, iterative global thresholding is applied to the smoothed degraded image until the stopping criteria is reached. Then a threshold selection method from gray level histogram is used to binarize the image. The next step is detecting areas where noise still remains and applying iterative thresholding locally. A method to improve the quality of textual inf.rmation in the document is also done as a post processing stage, thus making the approach efficient and better suited for character recognition applications.

The multicast mobile ad-hoc network (multicast MANET) is proposed for a sender sending packets to several receivers through a multicast session. Since members of a multicast group changes frequently, the issue of supporting secure authentication and authorization in multicast MANET becomes more critical than the network provided a fixed central authentication (CA) server. This work thus proposes a two-step secure authentication approach for the multicast MANET. First, a Markov chain trust model is proposed to determine the trust value (TV) for each one-hop neighbors. A nodepsilas trust value is analyzed from its previous trust manner in this group. The proposed trust model is proven as an ergodic continuous-time Markov chain model. Second, a node with the highest TV of a group will be selected as the CA server. For increasing reliability, the node with the second highest TV will be selected as the backup CA server that will take over CA when CA fails. The procedures of the secure authentication for group management are detailed. The security analysis of each procedure is analyzed to guarantee that the proposed approach achieves a secure reliable authentication in multicast MANET. Numerical results indicate that the analytical trust value of each mobile node is very close to that of simulation under various situations. The speed of the convergence of the analytical trust value shows that the analytical results are independent of initial values and the trust classes.
