utilize web and database technology to construct a Journal-Based Portfolios Assessment system to realize a Legitimate Peripheral Participation (LPP)[1] learning community. In this system, we divide system to three layer, the view layer present data by Oracle Portal Server, Data layer store data by Oracle Database Server and Operating Control layer operate workflow by Oracle Database trigger and job Data analysis and questionnaire indicates that Web Journal is effective to promote knowledge exchange, Student can improve learning performance and it can form a LPP structure The purpose of using the journal approach[2] is to emulate the forming of academic societies formed by journals. At the same time, the achievement of students in a course is based on their publications in journals and the positions they played in the journals. First, students submit their work such as homeworks, learning portfolios, reports of organizing contents in the discussion, learning problems, related websites. Each submitted article would be assessed by three peers Then the reviewers will review the submitted works. The reviewers will give comments to students. The journal system will publish good articles. Articles published include submitted works and reviewer's comments hoping that students will contribute and exchange their knowledge.

We present an architecture and a set of challenges for peer database management systems. These systems team up to build a network of nodes (peers) that coordinate at run time most of the typical DBMS tasks such as the querying, updating, and sharing of data. Such a network works in a way similar to conventional multidatabases. Conventional multidatabase systems are founded on key concepts such as those of a global schema, central administrative authority, data integration, global access to multiple databases, permanent participation of databases, etc. Instead, our proposal assumes total absence of any central authority or control, no global schema, transient participation of peer databases, and constantly evolving coordination rules among databases. In this work, we describe the status of the Hyperion project, present our current solutions, and outline remaining research issues.

computer technology has made a substantial contribution in teaching and learning to higher education during the past two decades (1983-2003). Until recently, Internet technology promises to become even more pervasive in this arena, there is a paradigm shift from classroom based teaching to computer based teaching, such as computer aided learning using Web based learning approach and its corresponding variants. Today more and more learning takes place outside of the classroom, however, most of the time spent as a learner is probably still in a "traditional" classroom. This research work has built a Web learning site on a database design topic and using a quantitative approach by Web mining techniques to discover the effectiveness of Web-based learning from a user's perspective. We have analysed our Web data collected to present our knowledge discovered in this paper. The insight knowledge could be utilized to refine the Web based learning content and design style for better effectiveness. © 2003 IEEE.

This paper describes a part of an extended use case approach for real time object-oriented software development. Its foundation is an object-oriented software design approach which partitions design schema into layered design component architecture of functional components called "design component unit". A use case action matrix contains a collection of related scenarios each describing a specific variant of an executable sequence of use case action units, which reflects the behavioral properties of the real time system design. Proposed scenario based testing and test plan metric measure and produce an ordering of this scenario set to enhance productivity, and promote and capitalize on test case reusability of existing scenarios. To illustrate the proposed approach uses an example of real time UPS (uninterruptible. power system). © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

The Byzantine Agreement (BA) problem has been widely discussed in the literature concerned Most BA protocols can reach a common agreement by way of fault masking. However, in a highly reliable fault-tolerant distributed system, just reaching a common agreement is not enough. We need to take into consideration another related problem called the Fault Diagnosis Agreement (FDA) problem. The goal of solving the FDA problem is to make each fault-free processor detect/locate the common set of faulty components in the distributed system. In this study, we shall solve the FDA problem with the dual failure mode over a multicasting network system. The proposed FDA protocol can detect/locate the maximum number of faulty components with the dual failure mode to solve the FDA problem in a synchronous multicasting network.

The mobile ad hoc network (MANET), which is characterized by an inf.astructureless architecture and multi-hop communication, has attracted a lot of attention recently. In the evolution of IP networks to version 6, adopting the same protocol would guarantee the success and portability of MANETs. In this paper, we propose a secure bootstrapping and routing protocol for MANETs. Mobile hosts can autoconfigure and even change their IP addresses based on the concept of CGA (cryptographically generated address), but they can not hide their identities easily. The protocol is modified from DSR (dynamic source routing) to support secure routing. The neighbor discovery and domain name registration in IPv6 are incorporated and enhanced with security functions. The protocol is characterized by the following features: (i) it is designed based on IPv6, (ii) relying on a DNS server, it allows bootstrapping a MANET with little pre-configuration overhead, so network formation is light-weight, and (iii) it is able to resist a variety of security attacks. © 2003 IEEE.

We describe an implementation of a Java program to perform automated deduction in propositional multi-modal logics on a Java smart card. The tight space limits of Java smart cards make the implementation non-trivial. A potential application is to ensure that applets down-loaded off the internet conform to personalised security permissions stored on the Java card using a security policy encoded in multi-modal logic. In particular, modal logic may be useful to ensure that previously checked "trust" relationships between pre-existing multiple applets on a Java card are not broken by the addition of a new applet. That is, by using multi-modal logic to express notions of permissions and obligations, we can turn the security check into an on-board theorem proving task. Our theorem prover itself could be down-loaded "just in time" to perform the check, and then deleted to free up space on the card once the check has been completed. Our work is thus a "proof of principle" for the application of formal logic to the security of multi-application Java cards. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

This paper proposes an integrated system for face recognition in cluttered images. An extension of the system is able to recognize faces by directly working with JPEG compressed image data without decompressing. The system consists of face detection using a polynomial neural network (PNN) and face recognition using pseudo-2D hidden Markov models (P2D HMM or pseudo-2D HMM). Firstly, images from a database or a Website are rescaled and preprocessed to form a standard size and file format. Secondly, face regions in image are located and extracted by PNN. Finally through face recognition the detected faces are labeled as one person of the database or rejected as "new subject". Our experiments show that the face detector has a higher detection rate and low false positive rate. At the same time, the face recognition achieves higher performance with lower complexity and less computation time compared with other systems.

This paper investigates time-invariant linear systems subject to input and state constraints. It is shown that the recoverable region (which is the largest domain of attraction that is theoretically achievable) can be semiglobally stabilized by continuous nonlinear feedbacks while satisfying the constraints. Moreover, a reduction technique is presented which shows, when trying to compute the recoverable region, that we only need to compute the recoverable region for a system of lower dimension which generally leads to a considerable simplification in the computational effort.

We present two novel strategies to increase the scope for application of speculative code motions: (1) Adding scheduling steps dynamically during scheduling to conditional branches with fewer scheduling steps. This increases the opportunities to apply code motions, such as conditional speculation that duplicate operations into the branches of a conditional block. (2) Determining if an operation can be conditionally speculated into multiple basic blocks either by using existing idle resources or by creating new scheduling steps. These strategies lead to balancing of the number of steps in the conditional branches without increasing the longest path through the conditional block. Algorithms for these strategies have been implemented within the Spark high-level synthesis framework that accepts a behavioral description in ANSI-C as input and produces synthesizable register-transfer level VHDL. Experiments on two moderately complex industrial-strength applications, namely, MPEG-1 and the GIMP image processing tool, demonstrate that conditional speculation is ineffective without using these strategies.
