An ad hoc wireless network provides inf.astructureless and mobility data networking, each move of the mobile host affects the change of network topology and the route of transmission. The ad hoc backup node setup routing protocol (ABRP) provides more complete consideration of the routing quality. In ABRP, the destination can receive more routes in a given period of time. Those routes from the source node to the destination node may give us ways to analyze and find some backup routes to get more help for reconnection when a link failure happens. The backup route inf.rmation can be saved in a specific on-the-route node. The backup routes can be rapidly discovered and one can trace back these nodes when there would be situations such as disconnections. Moreover, ABRP provides a backup node mechanism to reconnect maintenance quickly for fitting the property of the ad hoc wireless networks.

In the future, many of the physical objects that surround us will be augmented with microprocessors and wireless transceivers. They will communicate with each other, quietly monitor our daily activities and notify us of important events. Any piece of relevant inf.rmation on the Internet will be available to us anytime and anywhere. We call this scenario the Internet-scale ubiquitous computing environment. In our current lifestyle, one of the most precious and scarce resources is human attention. Internet-scale ubiquitous computing environments have the potential to make our daily life more comfortable and attractive because they will allow us to focus only on the essential tasks, letting technology take care of itself. However, building Internet-scale ubiquitous computing environments requires us to address a variety of technical issues. In particular we have to take into account the software development costs to build such an attractive future. As a road to developing the necessary software in a timely fashion, we propose to base the system on existing inf.astructural software components such as Linux, Java and CORBA. We identify several important architectural problems that builders of Internet-scale ubiquitous computing environments will have to address, and we present some recommendations on the basis of our analysis and implementation experience.

We describe a successful implementation of a theorem prover for modal logic S4 that runs on a Java smart card with only 512 KBytes of RAM and 32KBytes of EEPROM. Since proof search in S4 can lead to inf.nite branches, this is "proof of principle" that non-trivial modal deduction is feasible even on current Java cards. We hope to use this prover as the basis of an on-board security manager for restricting the flow of "secrets" between multiple applets residing on the same card, although much work needs to be done to design the appropriate modal logics of "permission" and "obligations". Such security concerns are the major impediments to the commercial deployment of multi-application smart cards. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Addresses the issues of evolving large-scale Web sites, in order to migrate them to more flexible forms for developing and managing content and applications. We first present an integrated process model for the life-cycle of a Web site. Next, we focus on specific steps of this model in order to (i) examine a layered, next-generation architecture for large Web sites, providing for content reuse and easier implementation of services and applications, and (ii) discuss the activities of remodeling our existing content inf.astructure and applications, according to the specifications of this target architecture. In our case study, we apply the new architecture, through the remodeling activities, in the evolution of the official Web site of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture.

Underground environments are of great interest to intelligent transportation system (ITS) applications, since they occur frequently in both urban and rural situations, and have peculiar propagation characteristics. This investigation includes two of the major fields in ITS applications: road-to-vehicle, and vehicle-to-vehicle communications. Besides that, the propagation measurements presented also focus on the transition effects when moving between the regions outside and inside a tunnel, which represents its entrance environment. The experimental results of path loss and delay spread profiles are presented and analyzed.

There are two basic parts to the behavioral specification of distributed systems: safety and progress. In earlier work, we developed a tool to monitor progress properties of CORBA components specified using the temporal operator transient. In this paper, we address the specification and testing of transient properties that are quantified (over both bounded and unbounded domains). We categorize typical quantifications that arise in practical systems and discuss possible implementation strategies. We define functional transients, a subclass of quantified transient properties that can be monitored in constant space and time. We outline the design and implementation of a tool for testing these properties in CORBA components.

The authors revisit the topic of Gabor feature extraction for Chinese OCR. We adopt a very simple discriminant function to construct a maximum discriminant function based character recognizer. We experiment with a simple way of forming a feature vector for each character image by extracting Gabor features using one wavelength at locations uniformly sampled with one spatial resolution. Extensive experiments on large vocabulary Chinese OCR for both machine-printed and handwritten characters are performed by using a large amount of training and testing data to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Gabor features for Chinese OCR. Using Gabor features as raw features, we have constructed several state-of-the-art Chinese OCR engines.

In the micro-/pico-cellular wireless networks, the frequency of handoffs, and the amount of the traffic for location updating and terminal paging will increase. For the geographical environment, the uncertainty of user behavior and current positions, traditional location updating schemes are no longer applicable to micro-/pico-cellular wireless networks. In the paper a location-updating scheme using fuzzy logic control is proposed to adaptively adjust the size of the location area for each user. Simulation results show that, for the proposed scheme, the total location management cost is reduced by 40.24% on average. Moreover, the proposed scheme can operate normally under the geographical environment with blockage, and reduce the terminal paging cost efficiently.

Most of classical methods for shape recognition depend on classification of the object's features. This paper, gets round these classical methods, and presents a technique to determine a signature for any given closed shape to recognize it. It is simple in calculations, efficient in time and space complexity. It is based on geometrical computations to represent the shape signature. It is found that the proposed technique is proper for the description and recognition process as well is illustrated by numerical examples. © 2000 IEEE.

Nonlinear tomographic reconstruction algorithms are developed for inversion of data measured in scattering experiments in which the scattered wavefields are modeled by an arbitrarily large number of terms in the Born series. The algorithms attain the form of a Volterra series of nonlinear operators, with the usual filtered backpropagation algorithm of diffraction tomography as the leading linear term.
