Current multidimensional indexing structures employed in content based image retrieval systems perform poorly when applied to feature data of high dimensionality. To alleviate this problem, one approach is to reduce the number of dimensions of the image data. The authors present a technique of dimensionality reduction using a neural network that combines heteroassociative and autoassociative functions. We show that besides allowing significant reduction in the number of dimensions, combining these two functions can lead to an improvement in retrieval performance.

This paper investigates the complex dynamical phenomena such as bifurcations and chaos in a structure of strongly coupled neural oscillators. Bifurcation diagrams and topological properties of these periodic solutions are then obtained, where synchronization phenomena are completely classified. A new bursting response is also observed and discussed.

Distributed channel allocation is a fundamental resource management problem in mobile cellular networks. It has a flavor of distributed mutual exclusion but is not exactly a mutual exclusion problem (because a channel may be reused in different cells). However it is still not clear what is the relationship between the two problems. We establish the exact relationship between the two. Specifically, we introduce the problem of relaxed mutual exclusion to model the problem of distributed channel allocation. We develop a general algorithm that guarantees relaxed mutual exclusion for a single resource, prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the inf.rmation structure, and address the issues that arise in relaxed mutual exclusion, including deadlock resolution, dealing with multiple resources, and design of efficient inf.rmation structure.

This paper introduces a novel, light-weight video encryption algorithm that supports light-weight, multi-layered encryption. The objectives of this encryption algorithm are to reduce the total amount of data encrypted (while providing reasonable privacy and security) and to allow for the playback of the encrypted stream in the presence of network packet loss and bit-errors. The latter property allows for the easy adaptation of encrypted video over best-effort networks, such as the Internet. This algorithm partitions the stream into three layers and provides encryption on the lower two layers. An adaptive algorithm is provided that shows how to adaptively partition the video data so that the user can ensure a maximum peak signal to noise ratio in the base layer. Our results show that we can provide security by encrypting only a fraction of the data depending on the level of security the user requires.

We present an efficient maximum likelihood (ML) training procedure for Gaussian mixture continuous density hidden Markov model (CDHMM) parameters. This procedure is proposed using the concept of approximate prior evolution, posterior intervention and feedback (PEPIF). In a series of experiments for training CDHMMs for a continuous Mandarin Chinese speech recognition task, the new PEPIF procedure achieves a 4-fold speed-up in terms of user CPU time over that of the Baum-Welch algorithm in producing models of given likelihood or recognition accuracy.

We introduce the static dialectical logics by Routley and Meyer (1976), and examine some dialectical inf.rence rules to give them a breath of dialectical dynaminism of reasoning. Then we attempt to define Aufheben, compromise, reconciliation, etc., formally on top of the dialectical logics. Based on these results, we propose an argument-based agent system where several agents communicate, argue with each other and finally make a decision through argumentation, from knowledge bases distributed or dispersed on the network. If the agent system fails in attaining a consensus, then the Aufheben process attempts to make a dialectical agreement.

In the maintenance phase of software development, it is necessary to check that all features still perform correctly after some changes have been applied to existing software. However, it is not easy to debug the software when a defect is found in those features which have not changed during the modification, even using a regression test. Existing approaches employ program deltas to specify defects; they have the limitation of it being hard to enact them, and they don't support any actual debugging activities. Moreover, such a system is hard to introduce into an actual environment. In this paper, we propose DMET (Debugging METhod) to solve such problems. DMET supports debugging activities when a defect is found by regression tests through detection, indication and reflection procedures. We also implement DSUS (Debugging SUpporting System) based on DMET. DSUS executes DMET procedures automatically, and it is easy to configure for an existing environment. Through experimentation with DMET and DSUS, we have confirmed that DMET/DSUS reduce the debugging time of software significantly. As a result, DMET/DSUS help in evolving the software for the software maintenance aspects.

This paper presents a new hand over method of unstable object using robot manipulators by an approach of continuously switching of controllers. Each of the robot manipulator can be considered as a controller to stabilize the object. It is needed to switch from one controller to another so that the input of the system does not exceed the value which is required to stabilize the object. However, it is known that if the controller switches at unsuitable time, the system may become unstable. The idea of a new method presented here is to make a switching of the controllers based on the double bracket flow. It is shown that even if the switching time is done at any time, the system still remains stable. Experimental results using two Puma-like 6-DOF robot to hand over an inverted pendulum from one robot to another are presented.

This paper presents an efficient approach to concurrent error detection and correction for FFT processors by using time-shared modular redundancy. Digits of each input operand are partitioned in disjoint subsets: the nominal operations are performed more than once on each subset by using different arithmetic units. Comparison of results allows detection and, possibly, correction of errors. The modified architectures for detection and correction are analyzed and evaluated. © 1999 IEEE.

Because domino logic design offers smaller area and higher speed than conventional CMOS design, it is very popular in high performance processor design. However, domino logic suffers from several design problems and one of the most notable is the charge sharing problem. In domino logic, there are two operations: the pre-charge phase and the evaluation phase. The charge sharing problem occurs when the charge which is stored at the output node in the pre-charge phase is shared among the junction capacitance of transistors in the evaluation phase. Charge sharing may degrade the output voltage level or even cause an erroneous output value. In this paper, we describe a method to measure the sensitivity of the charge sharing problem for a domino gate. For each domino gate, we compute a value called CS-vulnerability which describes the degree of sensitivity for a domino gate to have the charge sharing problem. In addition, our algorithm also generates test vectors to activate the worst case of the charge sharing problem. We have performed experiments on a large set of MCNC benchmark circuits. © 1999 IEEE.
